Good point. I agree, the next hire will be even more crucial and probably is the (!) most important hire in Troy fb history. If you study the history of Southern Miss you can draw a lot of parallels: Bower coached there forever (like Blakeney here), then they hired young gun Fedora who coached at USM for exactly four years - and he was quite successful. Next hires were all busts and now USM is middle of the pack in CUSA. They went from being a Top 25 team to this within a few years: www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/report-southern-miss-gives-up-home-game-to-pay-ellis-johnsons-buyout/ my fear. Is McClain in sole charge of hire ? Since he is AD, probably yes. Assuming Dr Hawkins would be hands off. We have to pay at least $1 million per year to keep up with the Sun Belt. Be nice if at all possible to have a guy who will stay more than 3-4 years

Who is he? Where does he coach? Current DC at LALA. Has won as HC but not consistent. Goes 10-2 one season and 4-8 the next. Better choices out there. If you want a winner look at Kerwin Bell. Just went 14-0 and D2 Nat Championships in year 2 at Valdosta. Won at Jacksonville U (66-35 with only 3 winning seasons before his arrival) and they don't even give football scholarships. Great QB coach, knows how to recruit FL, GA and AL and great offensive mind Kerwin Bell played QB for Florida in the 80's as I recall?

Get the Eastern Washigton coach if you are talking FCS. Houston at JMU would have been a great choice but he got hired. Plenty of choices if NB leaves Head coach at Maine is young and doing an outstanding job. He mostly recruits from New York City but is a name to consider

I'm not anti minority in any way....I'd love for a Chinese person to coach at the college level...but it has zero to do WHY i would choose a coach. love America, everyone is entitled to their opinion. But if you think there are no young and Qualified African-American college football coaches being passed over for opportunities to coach for the simple reason of being a minority than you are blind, live in a cave or bigoted. Again, just think it’s the right thing to do. At least give someone a shot. auburntigers.com/coaches.aspx?rc=56&path=football Rodney Garner would be one name to consider

No one likes him... From what I have seen of his teams, they lack discipline. It would be like the final years under LB. He loads up on SEC transfers too. No thanks

FWIW- Herbstreit suggested Butch Jones a "Best Fit" for the WVU job if available. I agree. Butch Jones was a blinding success at Tennessee!

WVU fan here. I've seen we are after HCNB. Any insights on the schemes he runs on offense and defense? I've seen some mentions of an Air Raid but others that say not quite that. He sounds like he is a good HC from the stats your last 3 years. He’s horrible. I’d never hire him Neal Brown isn't cut out for a bigger school. He needs to stay at Troy 20 years and retire! LOL

So what now? Can we keep Matt Moore, Vic Koenning? What about our recruits? Promote VK to HC? VK was an awful HC at Wyoming. Not cut out to be a head coach. Wonderful Co-ordinator though of course.

Alabama is cleaner than most programs. It is a multi billion dollar business and Saban can't control what wealthy boosters do just like other big time schools. Been wondering if Tua's brother and family were paid to move to Alabaster and father given a new job?

Who is on the short list if Neal Brown leaves? I don’t know but if we want to compete with App St / Drinkwitz & Dorsey we better have a plan. Chad Lunsford has turned GA Southern around too

And why would Holgerson leave WVA to go to Houston? Am I missing something here? Saw one of the stories address this. Seems this year might've been his best chance to win something at WVA ... and didn't. So maybe he realizes that you just can't win big there? And, it said he keeps a home in Houston ... like it's "home"?? Also, a story mentioned that Houston has a "Billionaire" (yes ... with a B) supporter who is also friends with Holgerson. This supporter wants to make Houston a Major program! We saw with Oregon what a billionaire supporter (Nike dude) can do to a program! So, Troy needs one of those!! One of you guys needs to go out and invent some really cool tech ... or cure the common cold ... or at least hit a really big powerball!! T Boone Pickens gave $150 million to Oklahoma State athletic Dept Still miles behind the Sooners

Hmmm. What attraction would Miami have over Kentucky for Stoops ? Would the plus be that much more than the minus ? CNB will not turn down Kentucky. Nice weather?? I thought Stoops just signed a big contract? SEC> ACC

Miami should have an on campus stadium. The Canes did share the old Orange Bowl with the Dolphins in the glory years though.

Really impressed with him. Size, enough speed and great hands. I think he has a shot in the NFL. Heard scouts were there to look at Damion at the Bowl game.

I think based on NCAA regulations he wouldn’t have been able to play in the next season while getting academic aid he would have been a counter and had to be put on an athletic sclorship.Essentially Troy got a free look based on his academics but would had to been put on athletic aid once varsity competition began. I actually do not think he beats out Barker either so it’s a moot point.Happy for him, good family. I don't think he pans out in the NFL either. Leach system QB's have a poor draft record.

Being a college walk-on simply means you are on the college team and receive no form of athletic financial aid (athletic scholarship) during that time. I was considered a walk on by the NCAA even though I did not pay a penny. Point was that they signed him without using an athletic scholarship so they didn't have anything to lose. Not to many football players make 31 ACT...well they do but they play at Harvard or Northwestern lol As rare as the QB that had an offer from Alabama and turned it down to go to Princeton last year. Can't recall his name right now. Think he was a 3 star.

We did fine with Silvers. Mike Leach makes decent QB's into stars playing in his system. None panned out in the NFL yet.

I thought Bolt was our DC when DeMarcus Ware was playing? He was. He was the architect of the Ware led defense that helped beat MS State 17-9. I bought the "Dead Bolt Defense" game day shirt from that contest and wore it until my wife was able (after multiple attempts) to throw it away. That was a sad looking shirt by the time it departed. It had more oil and grease in it than does my car. I think that win at Starkville was in a hurricane if I'm not mistaken

Who would want credit for Rowell? Bolt was only slightly better. Both were about as knowledgable and competent at stopping offenses as I was looking at my daughters organic chemistry book from Troy...clueless!! I thought Bolt was our DC when DeMarcus Ware was playing?

These are facts but its a grey area. With this reasoning does Earl Bruce get credit for Urban Myer's sucess or the first coach that hired Saban, Dabo, Bellichek or Kelly get credit for them winning. LB hired both but VK was gone for 11 years and NB for 5 years. Does LB get credit for Rowell and Bolt also? asking for a friend I don't even know what you're trying to infer. I was simply pointing out when each was hired and under what capacity. Don't read between the lines, you'll go blind. I'm not trying to give credit to anyone nor take away credit from anyone. Tell your friend for me... Who would want credit for Rowell?

Ah, good to know. This brings up another question: Why couldn't we get over the hump back in the FCS days? We made it to the playoffs but I think the semi-finals were as far as we could get. A multitude of reasons. One, we were only in FCS (1 AA, still can’t stop calling it that) a few years, 10 or less. Two, upper level FCS teams are REALLY good. Topping that list is tough. Using us as an example, we were a top tier 1AA, winning the Southland and making the playoffs multiple times including the semis. In our first year of transition, we went to Starkville and beat MS State. Winning that division isn’t easy. ND State could compete in the Sun Belt. Beat Iowa before when the Hawkeyes were in the top 25 I believe. I don't see why they don't move up to FBS. Only issue would be finding a conference. Maybe Mountain West.
