I don’t think a fair weather fan would come to this board. Just a bunch of arm chair QBs who think they should be the head coach. I know my group of Troyfans.com posters are not fair weather fans. Sure they would. Fair weather fans flock to a winner and fade away when times get tough. Keyboard coaches and AD’s do the same. It’s par for the course. Message boards are open for all types. Those that are too sensitive or take it too seriously tend to struggle with it at times. Nothing here changes the game on the field. WAIT. WHAT? Are you telling me that what is discussed and bantered about on this message board has NO DIRECT BEARING on the outcome of the games being discussed? Well crap, all this time I thought a difference was being made based on the plethora of knowledge and wisdom that is often times present on this board. No influence at all, huh? Well, I'll just be damned!

The QB whose performance doesn’t suffer when the protection provided him by the O line is weak is like unto Sasquatch. He may exist in the wild, he may not, but finding conclusive evidence he exists is nearly impossible. Cam Newton, Lamar Jackson, even Tom Brady all play better when they have adequate protection. Gunnar is no different. He has proven that he’s a physically tough competitor who knows how to win ballgames, even when things aren’t ideal. That’s all we can reasonably ask from any QB. I’m glad we have it in Gunnar. case in point...https://www.yahoo.com/sports/deion-sanders-son-gets-painkiller-054332180.html Meat gone, marrow sucked out of every crevice, bone is buried, the OBVIOUS has been stated, SOOOOO, can we move on?? Just a fun topic since we are bowl eligible. What is your preferred destination? Not that we have a say on where the team ends up. I didn’t make the trip last year but I heard a lot of positives about that set up. I'm not even 100% clear on how bowl selection is even racked and stacked anymore with ESPN owning many of the "lower tiered" bowls now Would LOVE to go to the Frisco or Las Vegas bowl, probably will not happen, but there's two I'd like to experience.

Uniforms were one of my favorites Very clean Agree, except for one minor detail, I wish the T on the helmet would have had a little cardinal pinstripe to accentuate the Power T. Other than that, thought that they were "CLEAN like the ball headed dude!"

First off, gotta say this is a pretty refreshing thread on this message board. There's a little trash, a little 'heart over mind" BUT MOSTLY great substance... So far lol
My .02 worth
It is Homecoming for Texas St and they are expecting their largest crowd since 2005. Expecting the place will be rocking the crowd will be loud and very festive. I'm guessing they appealed to the Sunbelt/ESPN mafia for a game time change. Who knows, BUT It's supposed to rain, and I mean like 85% chance all day, night... Something we have recently dealt with, except this time it will be in the 50s vs that real feel of 37!!
My two biggest concerns are, have addressed our poor TD results in the Red zone? We have to get better there, no question. Secondly, we have to tackle in space really, really well. If we dial up pressure and go man, we have to clean in the back end.
I am for sure these things were addressed just got to execute. Leadership on this team will be tested this week in getting focused and helping get all others focused.
Should be a great ball game, hated I had to cancel my trip! Accomodations host, my Brother, got the damn covid! At home I shall sit!

I, too, watched Trojan Talk and was left wondering, "could some of these guys actually see the field THIS YEAR?"
With the red shirt rules as they are, kids can play in four games and save their year. So, and I was not a math major at Troy, by my calculations, they could actually get reps starting maybe on Thursday, but for sure afterwards.
Just thinking under the influence of Rodney Strong (IYKYK)

Under other football discussions I have turned on the UTEP / Sam Houston game. Fascinating in that a camera angle that is not focused on about 5 players at a time is not happening. Wednesday nite for an 0-7 home team and a 2-5 road team is truly a captivating Game! By that I mean the crowd all 63 of them are gathered in two small groups that are being held hostage to appear as though someone is there. It was a damn good game though! SHS has GOT TO BE the best 0-8 team in the country! My goodness you talk about SNAKE BIT!

Couple things: I hope JMU wins EVERY GAME THEY PLAY, helps us with conference record. I THINK IT SUCKS that they are ineligible to play in the post season. I would really LOVE A REMATCH now that we seemed to have figured out the O line issues which we had not when we played them. Our d is well, OUR D! Think it would be classic!

"Require all FBS programs to provide 90% of the total number of allowable scholarships over a two-year rolling period across 16 sports, including football. FBS schools will also be required to fund 210 scholarships each year, amounting to no less than $6 million annually." Just curious if anyone knows where we stand in relation to this? Says goes into effect in 2027. I am THOROUGHLY CONFUSED, I thought FBS stood for Football Bowl Subdivision, or, in other words, the defining of the old D-1 and D-1AA (FCS) FOOTBALL (ONLY) designations. It seems we have used the FBS/FCS as an "umbrella" connotation to group all colleges into a particular basket. For example, where does Gonzaga fall? They are neither FBS or FCS, they simply don't play football, are they going to required to add programs? What about schools like Mercer? They play FCS football, but play D-1 (FBS?) in all other sports? I THINK what you will see is that programs like baseball (I believe there are 13 scholarships available) where players get 1/2 scholarships (either room and board or books and tuition) and rely on academic scholarships and financial aid, receive more/larger scholarship dollars/benefits. Maybe there is an opportunity to make these 'partial' scholarships into full scholarships, to help with the numbers. Don't believe there is a need to add sports, due to costs associated, and just add #s to existing non-revenue generating sports. BTW, what about the Bass Team and Rugby (club) team? Thoughts?

You think Jacksonville State has a better football program than Nevada? Nevada has won two conference titles at this level and it's a conference not made up of all FCS schools playing house. I agree with some of your points, but I think the wolfpack caught an unwarranted stray here. You missed my entire point here, it IS NOT ABOUT a teams G5 success or whatever, it's about practicality and program costs, travel for fans, students, band, team.... You play Jax St instead of Nevada, IN JACKSONVILLE (for comparison sake) and 15-20K Trojan Fans go to that game! Please try and see the concept and not hone in on the examples. Hell, replace Nevada with Utah St, same/same.. SMDH!

This board NEVER ceases to amaze me! Why in the world would you want us to turn down A REAL SELLOUT, meaning all the seats are occupied, not some scheme to sell all the tickets (see Army game 2022). The economic impact of a TRUE SELLOUT would be astronomical for the game day experience, for local businesses, for the entirety of Pike County and the surrounding area?
The competition would be AWESOME! Not just on the playing surface, but the bands, the student sections and US, the fans! The atmosphere would be ELECTRIC!
I dont know a damn thing about "the rivalry" or the history or the butt hurt feelings some may have. I DO KNOW that travel expenses and cost to the program, I'm guessing, would be SUBSTANTIALLY LESS than traveling to UMASS (thank you COVID for putting that game in the back burner and is now scheduled for 2025, or Nevada in 2024. I promise you Jax St is a BETTER TEAM and program than either Nev. or UMass, but some on this board sound as if playing them is beneath us, or we gain nothing, or... blah, blah, blah.
Does anyone, besides me, see the VALUE of playing a team that is going to help ROCK THE HOUSE? Anyone see how valuable to the program this game could be? How being in a FULL STADIUM just makes it better? Anyone?
I know nothing about the emotional stress the past has put in some of you ref Jax St. I do think MOST of those in this board have no idea either. Can we just please look BIG PICTURE for once? Put our bias, hatred, disrespect and whatever else you feel deep down and put it aside for the good of the team, school, town, county, state???
Or, we just sit back and preach, "No, no, no to Jax St, they aren't worthy, they haven't paid their dues, does nothing but hurt Troy and help them and ANY OTHER BULLSHIT you want to put out there. If you are scared, SAY IT! I just don't think we are! Also don't believe Brent Jones will look to this board for advice, although I think SOME OF US believe he will!
BRING ON JAX ST, REALLY Pack the Vet, EXPLODE the game day tailgate and have the loudest, largest, most engaged student section EVER!
But hey, that's just me, an old man trying to figure out the best way to gain revenue for the program, engage the fan base, and bring in THOUSANDS of dollars into the local community. I can see why some of you wouldn't want that, NOT!!

A LOT of great points made above. The Vic mishap was certainly an early player in NBs success. I don't know what he inherited at WVU, what kind of team/culture he had, who left, who he brought in, etc. so hare to pinpoint the why's. He had to make some REALLY tough choices when he first got to Troy and cut some players loose that just weren't going to work. Sent the message, was before the portal (where some crybabies go, not all, but some) and the team that was left 'got it'. I do know that Neal is a guy that coaches HARD, with deep conviction, and finding those kinds of players is very difficult. Was the job too big, I don't think so, for him. Remember he had been at big programs before, but it may have been too big for some of his hires. New times, tough roads to navigate, transfer portal, NIL and the product hasn't lived up to his or WVUs standards all factor in to the current situation. I really hope he gets 7-8 wins, going to be very difficult. They have the schedule to do it. If they can get past Pitt in two weeks, they could go on a little run, by 5-1 when OSU comes to town. sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/teams/west-virginia/schedule/?season=2023. He does that, turns it around, he may be there for a long, long time. Norvell in Tallahassee had some of the same issues and the fans were getting very restless, and he has it going on. If he is let go, He's not coming back to Troy, but he will land on his feet. He will never have coach again if he doesn't want to. My gut says he will most definitely coach again and for a long time. He is just too good of a coach. my .02 worth

This weekend will see Jax St visiting Coastal. I’m so conflicted. Is there anyway they can not lose? Maybe a Hurricane will threaten SC??? You know, other than our game, I am looking forward to this game more than any other. This could be a really good football game, all emotional feelings aside. Good for the Belt if Coastal wins and that's what needs to be a consideration, guess I am leaning that way. Didn't attend Troy during the HATE JAX era, that continues to burn in the belly of many on this board, so no emotional attachment there. Rich Rod will take a good team down there and Coastal had better be prepared or they will get exposed, on the defensive side for sure. Like all spread offenses, defenses often struggle. K State travel plans fell through, so I am forced to the Cave for the day! Suffice to say, looking forward to watching a good, G5 football game!

Texas St is the Sun Belt's Colorado. Their new coach came in from Incarnate Word (San Antonio) and REBUILT that roster with 41 Portal Transfers, 10 from Incarnate Word, 22 from Power 5 teams, and, sort of a surprise, 2 from Marshall, which I thought was odd!
Texas State is the Real Deal, but not anymore so than South, or Southern Miss, or LaLa. Just going to make winning the West that much more satisfying at the end of the season. Texas St winning continues to solidify the fact that the Sun Belt IS the premier Group of 5 conference. Way to go Bobcats, looking forward to our game in the Texas Hill Country, should be for some marbles and should be a really good game!
BTW looks like Troy had 18 transfers, 7 of which were Power Five guys, and NO SUNBELT transfers, although we did get one from UAB and one from Memphis, Asa Martin, and he is going to be a fantastic option next to Vidal.

Does anyone have 3 extra tickets for the Arkansas State football game they won't use? Doesn't matter if it's general admission or better. I know a family of 3 near Columbus that are interested in going. They've never been to a Troy game ever, but this past season piqued their interest. So I thought I'd introduce them. Maybe we'll get some new fans out of the experience. I AM YOUR HUCKLEBERRY for this game! Send me a PM with some info and I will get back to you!

Been a minute since I was on this board, see most things never change!
I would like to talk about the subject matter ref the portal and Prime. I just would like everyone to remember that this was a REALLY, REALLY BAD football team last year, 1-11! So for those of you who wish to "dis" on Prime, understand that he isn't a stupid man, dude has some 'corporate and coaching game'! I don't think they are going to win the PAC-8 (or however many teams they have) this year, but I think he may win 5/6/7/8 TIMES AS MANY games as they won last year. They lost their leading receiver, what 800 yards? I, personally, am going to watch and just see how he fairs. Check out his coaching staff, they are no joke, so, Imma just wait and see and not disrespect his methodology. When you're told that you don't have wait it takes by a staff that is evaluating you based on what they see today and what they have seen on film from past season(s).
Just keep in mind there has not been good football come out of Boulder in a long time, maybe before they legalized the magic plant, but they have been mediocre to bad for a while. Since 2003 they have had ONE ten win season (2016), One 8 win (2004), One 7 win (2005); one 6 win season (2007); and the rest 5 wins or less!
Suffice to say, Colorado could have done a whole lot worse than Prime and what he brings to the program. I will agree, IT'S GONNA BE FUN TO WATCH IT UNFOLD!!

Contact Ryan at the Ticket Office (877) 878-9467. They have a few "single game tickets" is probably your best bet. I believe they are $100 each.

Season doesn't even start until next week. Best I've seen them play all year. Still turn the ball over too much, everyone needs to have better court awareness because Dean is going to dish it, so be ready! Loved the D effort, HCSC is a MASTER at the switch up D, especially on the press. Last you shoot 70+% from the FT Line, your gonna win a BUNCH OF GAMES!!
Growing into a really nice team, with some growth and maturity, is 20 W's out of the question? I don't think so.

If we can get a QB we might be going to a really good bowl. I'm up for New Orleans or a New Years Day Bowl !!! I am ready to go bowling as well! Going into spring, I think we have Watson and Powell at QB. I hope to see some improvement and development. I think i will be pleasantly surprised. My prediction is that the quarterback room will contain at least two more besides Powell and Watson. The depth in that room is extremely limited I believe you will see at least one transfer or juco player come in to compete immediately. Of course that depends on who they hire for the OC. However it rolls I believe we are in great hands.

It is my understanding that we only have 6 or 7 total available scholarships to give out, due to the extra covid year of eligibility, but still got to get back to 85. So THAT may be more of the reason for the small class as anything else. Shoot, we only had 10 seniors graduate, so..... HCJS has a pretty young team, hoping he can make these pieces work with a FEW of his own. Might be in that Portal Shopping mode for a few specific pieces?

Please tell me the reason we should keep Brandon Hall as the DC, I could see him as a position coach but he is not consistent when it comes to play calling and if it had not been for the talent we would have been in really bad shape. We need someone in charge of the talent we have that can develop, mentor and hold them accountable. I do not dislike Brandon but if we want the type of defense we have had in the past , we need to put a DC in place that can get us there, Brandon is not that coach at this time Well, we are ranked #28th in total defense in the country; 18th in turnovers; 37th in first downs given up (ahead of Bama, Iowa, Ark, LSU, among others); just to name a few. Our defense played their A** off this past year. Did we get beat on so e exposive plays? YEP We're we out of position at times? YEP Did we time and time and time again give our offense a chance to win? ABSOLUTELY!!! HOWEVER our offense was 116th (out of 130) IN TIME OF POSSESSION, ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTEENTH!!! We cannot expect to our defense to keep giving our offense the ball and they turn it over or go three and out. We went 3 and OUT ON SEVEN STRAIGHT POSSESSIONS (someone fact check me please) against App. Not the only game where we went STRETCHES of consecutive possessions where we went three and out or turned it over.... Defense was not the issue AT ALL! Please understand I am not telling at you with the all caps, I'm trying to emphasize what I think are glaring discrepancies within our program. But we need some consistency in this turnover,Jon has been gone for four years or so, and the best bridge, IMO, for that transition is by keeping the absolute best part of our team, which, again IMO, was the Defense, FAR AND AWAY... You asked for reasons, those are some of mine!!
