To be fair, JSU's defenses were outstanding those four years. Maybe he's learned a thing or two from Vic. We'll see about Pugh, but I don't understand the hire. They don't run the spread at BYU, and their offense wasn't that good either. He also has no experience as an OC. Like someone mentioned earlier, it was probably a way to get him to Troy as O-Line coach. That's more of his specialty. As far as him being OC... was anyone worried when Matt Moore was considered OC? A guy that was nothing more than an O-Line coach almost his whole career? (The HC we don’t speak of) (The HC we don’t speak of) has already said in his press conference that he will be the playcaller, just like Neal Brown was. The OC will just be another pair of eyes on the field that helps (The HC we don’t speak of). As for Brandon Hall... don't you think there must've been a damn good reason Neal Brown AND Vic Koenning brought the guy on board last year? As detail-oriented as Neal Brown was, do you think he would've hired a guy that doesn't know good defense? Heck, even Bob Stoops at Oklahoma removed his grad assistant title and hired him to be a full-time defensive assistant... and Bob Stoops knows defense. OC's are also responsible for the bulk of game-planning.

Now were still talking about the Barn? He just seems to be all about (The HC we don’t speak of). Prove me wrong HHCL. Please prove me wrong. He was asked a question and he answered it. How is this difficult to fathom?

Good grief, fine other than Troy he was never at a school more than 3 years. Don’t be afraid of facts. I'm not. You knew what my point was.

Other than Troy, Neal Brown had never been at any one place for more than two seasons... Not 100% accurate. He was at Troy for 4 years during his first stint here. But understand the point you were trying to make. I said other than Troy...

First day of classes and no announcement made public. One day wasted in off season conditioning. Announce a coach or something That's not how this works. The players (nor coaches) dont just sit around eating cheetos while a coach is being looked for.

Saying (The HC we don’t speak of) failed at Auburn isn't really fair IMO. When the head coach, who claimed you were going to get full control over the play calling, overrides almost every play call you make and then THAT fails, do you really deserve to get the criticism there?

Just heard from another good source... Matt Moore as head coach, and Troy's athletic Dept is working to get Jon Sumrall as defensive coordinator. Moore is trying to retain coaches on staff. Didn't coach Brown take the play calling away from him? When? I was under the impression that Neal Brown never relinquished those duties to anyone. Matt Moore spoke in the offseason in Enterprise and his quote was something to the effect of "I'm the offensive coordinator but make no mistake there is only one person on our staff that calls the plays and he's my boss."

Buyout?

Post by joshboutwell on Jan 5, 2019 17:21:22 GMT -6
Oh ... and still no mention from Jeremy or the administration ... are we getting anything from WVU? If we fire a coach ... we have to "buyout" the remainder of the contract. But if the coach breaks the contract ... we don't hold them responsible??? I guess we're just nice like that. It's not about being nice. It's an enforceable contract, someone will have to pony up, unless they just wave it completely (not likely). At this point, I would assume they allowed Brown to sign while the buyout stuff is still worked out, especially if they are negotiating a home-and-home.

Gibson is being promoted very hard by higher ups and current players to be retained as DC. If that were not the case, then I would 100% expect NB to take VK with him. Neal Brown is a great coach, and maybe the smartest coach in the country, but VK was a huge part of his success at Troy. Not sure he'll have Top 15 defenses with a different hire at WVU. I can't figure out why WVU wants Gibson? Does he make good bbq or moonshine because he couldn't stop any body as a DC It made me scratch my head, too, but from everything I've seen all of the WVU fans seem to blame the scheme more than anything.

Ok, this is probably a dumb question, but is there any chance Derrick Ansley would talk to us or has that ship sailed? Asking a lot of guy that is in his first year in the NFL, but it's worth the shot. Would def. be an interesting hire but you're talking about a guy that has never even been DC somewhere. Hell of a DB coach, knows the area and is a Troy grad but HC might be a tall order at this point. He's still VERY young, though.

Gattis or Golding would both be huge but that payday would be equally as huge. I got a feeling Alabama would match almost any number Troy would be able to offer.

WHA?? No walls? No AC? Just won't be able to keep up with the 'barns & Bammers. How can we compete with the big boys??
Contemporay 18 year old prospects absolutely need Air Conditioned practice facilities!!And juice bars, iPhones, Big Screen TV's with X-Box, Starbucks, and free wi-fi Troy's players already have big screen TVs with X-Box/PS4 and free wi-fi.

Give it to Vic just to keep him. And just forget about Wyoming. A losing proposition for anyone. LB turned it down when we were D-1AA. He will be lowballed on salary but a fixture as HC versus using us as a stepping stone and additional money above our current spend for HC will be available for assistants. Sumrall is making $350,000 at Ole Miss. Use some of that to bring him back as DC/Assistant HC. We once had a 28 y/o OC that ran a great offense. Find the next one. One that keeps his foot on the gas and doesn’t know how to use a brake. These guys are out there. Vic and Jon will find good position coaches. Hopefully this will help keep some we have. Vic is coming with Brown already announced by WVU Where are you seeing this?

Considering he stayed there throughout all the nonsense with football being dropped, I would say he is very loyal.

Saw a tweet just minutes ago that Bronco Mendenhall has entered the picture - tweet says WVU and Mendenhall have a 4 year deal of $10.5 million. Just reporting what I've seen. @johnmoretti5 is the source. Dude has 116 followers on twitter, sounds legit! Take a look at some of his other Tweets, too. I don't know if I'd be willing to take something as credible info from someone that seems to be legit bat S***.

Been off the grid - has Holgerson been announced? Yes, they announced it earlier today. WVU put out a statement saying they plan to hire someone sooner rather than later. Also, there have been certain supposed insiders claiming that Neal Brown has already informed his players that he is leaving. This is not true.

In what alternate universe does Alabama have "facilities that wouldn't be in the top 10 in the country?" They aren't the best in the SEC. That honor went to TX A&M. Ok, Maybe Top 10 but behind IMO A&M, Oregon, Michigan and Ohio St. Also if it ever gets into pure money for facilities my money will be on Notre Dame but just my opinion. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say you've never actually seen Alabama's facilities have you? Saying they aren't Top 10, or at the very least Top 5, is pretty silly.

Meanwhile Alabama with two uniform combinations and facilities that wouldn't be in the top 10 in the country is the premier program. Money and facilities help but it boils down to two things 1) coaching 2) recruiting In what alternate universe does Alabama have "facilities that wouldn't be in the top 10 in the country?"

I'll be there. First time covering a Troy game at Ladd Peeble, looking forward to it. An experience a Troy Fan just gotta have! Get there early Friday, you'll appreciate the local effort in making this Bowl special. With any luck, it won't dip into the low 20's!! A memory for the Troy Faithful. BTW, it may the the LAST opportunity to cover Troy at Ladd Peeble!! I can't be there the whole week like some in the media get to be but I'm going down on Friday and am looking forward to it.
