. This would return major collegiate athletics to the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's. I'm pretty sure I have no problem with this. I've talked to a few guys over the years that played for Bear back in the 60s. (I'm actually named for one of his All-Americans that played HS for my dad). Believe me, with schools that put emphasis on sports ... athletes have always been treated differently! Do you think Namath, Stabler, etc. were really held to same standards as "normal" students? Back in the day ... there were very few restrictions ... recruiting was like the Wild West! Married students were given housing for their family ... jobs for wives, etc. Whole different world. (Read "The Last Coach" about Bear ... great book!) Heck, I came out of HS in 84. If I was a HS Sr. today, I would have a hard time qualifying for college ... and for sure wouldn't as a "normal" student. I took ACT one time, made an 18 or 19 as I recall. (left PCB at midnight and drove 6 hrs in to the testing center and took a quick nap before the test ... made little designs with the dots in the math portion!). I don't really like that so much emphasis is put on that one test score!! It might be an ok indicator of where a person is academically at that exact point in time (or at least who has the funds to take lots of ACT training), but hard work/perseverance have much more to do with a person's eventual academic and professional success!

You attack plenty in other posts. Why are you even a fan of collegiate athletics if you feel this way? You son wasn't competing against those athletes for admission spots, he was competing against other non athletes. If there wasn't athletics at Florida, it's not like they would be filling those non athlete spots with general population. So you admit there is a double standard? And your wrong about your statement at UF. If they had no athletics they would fill them with more students. They can't expand to increase enrollment so they keep raising the entrance requirements on students...except athletes. I would say in football and basketball at UF there is at least a 1.0 GPA and 10 Point difference in ACT scores vs general students. One of the reason UCF enrollment has sky rocketed because the state keeps growing but the slots at UF don't. And if you want to consider saying that athletes don't deserve preferential treatment as an attack? That's your problem. A university is a institute of learning and research first, yes, athletics brings in big money at certain schools but not at others. If you allow in students who could other wise not get accepted at a school just because they play sports, that in itself is discrimination. As an example, a player gets into a school with a 2.3 HS GPA and a 19 ACT but for a general student they need a 3.8 GPA and 27 ACT. Does the student with a 3.5 GPA and a 25 ACT have a gripe that they could not attend that school but the athlete can? As Bubba the trojan put so well ... there are often things that we can say aren't "right"! I would also say "unfair" in a sense as well. But, that's so all through life. In the words of my old 7th grade teacher: Kid made bad grade, he said, "that ain't Fair!". Teacher: "Fair ... Fair ... It ain't fair you livin and folks better than you dead!! Shut up and sit down!" Also, entrance standards will be rising across FL. Few months ago, we had consultants come do some training on advising/retention, etc. They were From FAU. FL, and many other states (AL likely soon to follow) are changing formulas for state funding. No more will it just be "butts in the seats"! But, it will based on Completion/graduation, etc (among other things). So, what's the best way a school can ensure students complete/succeed/graduate ... well, if you only take the top students! (those guys said UF will likely be going to 4.0 for admission) Now, the case of taking athletes with lower scores, etc., that seems to be a calculation that the risk they pose to funding loss by not succeeding academically is out weighed by their potential for bringing other things to the school: funds, exposure, merchandising, etc. Going back the original article about the new standards ... I think that's apparently an attempt to correct some of what can be seen as unfair/not right. Of course, there are lots of issues with the higher standards. (as stated in the article). I for one am a big believer that the college experience (especially as an athlete) can dramatically change a kid's life ... even if they weren't able to complete/graduate. Anyway, lots of changes coming down the road in Higher Ed the next several years!

They showed home side stands ...away side very sparse. Even for utc when they brought lots of support, not full. (my dad played at jsu, so we went). And yes ... Still hard to pull for them!

Well, as HS kid, I might've dreamed of playing DI ... and had chance as "package deal" with a teammate. But, so thankful I came to Troy. And, I can tell you this ... there's no way I'd swap my 2 rings ... and more importantly the experiences with those players and those coaches, and knowing that in those two seasons .. in our Division ... we were the BEST!!! Incredible feeling to walk off the field in my last game as National Champion!! I know not many people get that opportunity! So, you might could say that a kid would swap "the opportunity" to win Championships for a DI LOI ... but I don't think many who actually win one would swap it for anything!!! Just my opinion!

Some great memories as a kid going to UA games at Legion Field. My Dad would usually take us to at least one game. Fred Sington, Sr. would give him tickets, so we'd stop by the Sington Sporting goods downtown and pick them up. Went to see the US Women's National Team play this year ... it's in rough shape! Shame

Doing what I can in that area. One unfortunately came to the Idaho game and wasn't impressed. Still trying. Love my school. Also had a long conversation with someone in the athletics dept. He asked some important questions and I gave honest answers. His response was what I was saying he is hearing over and over from alumni etc in Florida specifically and he did say they are trying to work to correct some things. I was encouraged after the talk but we will see Your friend wasn't impressed with what? The team, the players, the stadium, the coaching, what? What has he done to help make things better since he left whomever he is. You imply that they don't come to games very often, they don't usually contact the university when they have a player that could help and I don't know if they are financial donors or not nor do I know if they donate their time so what exactly are they doing to make what they are not impressed with better? I know it's been decades but I'm going to use my experience as a player as an example. In baseball we won the first 3 conference championships ever won at Troy. During that 4 year run, the university failed to give us our letter for the '62 season, failed to give any players any recognition verbal or otherwise for any of the championships and refused to send the '64 team to the regionals playoffs even after 3 championships so I can say I think we have come a long way baby with certainty in player support by this university. My point is whatever you or your former player friends have experienced others have had it much worse at Troy but even with that, many from my era still support the university with the best of them. Sadly some never have since those days for understandable reasons. I've heard others in the past say they got ignored following a contact so I suppose there are reasons. I have no idea how many players to watch are given to coaches over a season. Tell your friends to get over their frustrations, start being a contributing part of the solution. As coaches, and former players, Troy could use their constructive criticism, their butts in seats and their donations and their time. No, they are not to busy to do that. I know many coaches that hind that time if they want to. You have to know no coach avoids your friends purposefully. What would be the point of that. Everyone on this board have these type stories we can dwell on endlessly but nothing is to be gained. Like the other poster said, if you have someone who is not involving you professionally like you think you deserve, contact that person personally and see what their response is but to not do that but gripe to others solves nothing. Picking up the phone is easy. If you do that and someone ignores you then complaining is fair game!! JMHO!!m Very well said Sir!!!!

"It put THEM in a position of being able to do nothing"! Who's is THEM and what POSITION did they otherwise hold to do anything anyway? Just because we are former players give us absolutely no power in the hiring and firing department and o think it does is wishful thinking or ego neither of which is worth a tinkers d---! I don't understand why there is such distain for naming the field after him when they did. It was for what he had done for 23 years, not the last 4 years. If that bothers these former players because it kept them from helping get the man fired earlier then any further comments concerning them and their support of Troy here by me needs to stop!!! Them was Hawkins, Dennis/Hartwell, and others on boards or administration. When they named the field they sealed that fate. That is exactly why you don't name things after active coaches. Lb did great things but he was not a God, was not the program, was not bigger than the program and he certainty wasn't above doing his job. His seasons from 2011-14 (19-31) would have gotten any other coach fired and I assure you if NB does the same, he would be gone. But then again, I could be wrong. It is sad that we play on Larry Blakney Field, named after a coach who did great things, but now with a program in shambles directly because of him. Easy man! It's not "sad" that we play on LB field! LB has been the most influential coach in our history! Obviously I think the world of Chan and Rick ... they were very important in laying the foundation, but they were here head coach here 2 and 3 years respectively! There's no doubt that LB deserves the field name ... and even if the school had waited until this year to do it, with the last 4 years he had ... he'd still deserve it!! It's the overall contribution/body of work. I don't think the naming thing had much to do with LB staying longer ... he had earned the right to try to go out on a positive note. LB stated himself that maybe he should've left after 2010 ... but he was in DROP. After the fact, you can always say "what if" ... maybe if they offered him an administrative post so he could serve out his 5 years of DROP?? He didn't make millions as our coach, I don't blame him for wanting to get the full DROP amount. (heck, I wish it was still around as I now approach retirement!! It's usually tough in the final year/years for a long serving coach. (see Spurrier, Bowden, Beamer, etc). Other teams "recruit against" the age. I'm getting on up in years ... I know you lose some energy/fire, etc. Recruiting is everything. The last few years we missed on several kids, and we just got out recruited by rivals. I don't think it was for lack of effort, just couldn't create the "buzz/excitement" that comes with a new coach. So, as some have said ... let's try to be positive! NB deserves and needs our support. You're right that if he has same results in 4 years, he should go. But, let's give him a chance! Oh, and even with just 3 wins, it was great to see a good Troy crowd at the Dome! I love Troy! I love Troy Football. It changed my life!! Here's to many good/successful years to come!!

If you look at this league this season ... close to parity. Most teams could really win any given Saturday. Turnover margin, making a few big plays, etc., and anything could happen. I think we'll play fast and well. We had a tough few weeks leading up to GA Southern, and that's not a good team to face when you're worn down! I think/hope we rebound and have a great game in the Dome!! Troy: 48 GA ST: 28 Go Troy!

As so many coaches say ... "Game of Inches"! I'm reminded of what Coach Gailey would say: "Every game is determined by 4 or 5 plays ... we just don't know which plays. So, play every play as if it's the ONE that will determine the game!"

Thanks sir! Makes me wish I'd passed math back in the day!! So, question about the last three guys on the 247 list (Jones, Robinson, Wesley) ... will they eventually be rated? I noticed on scout they all show some significant offers, but not on 247? Just curious. I know rankings don't necessarily lead to success ... but it's nice! Thanks again! I have a contact to get them added, but the regional analysts provide ratings. Keep in mind that we don't have any paying members on Troy's 247Sports site...so it's not a priority to get players rated/ranked. Understand. Thanks!

The 247Sports Composite Rating is a proprietary algorithm that compiles prospect "rankings" and "ratings" listed in the public domain by the major media recruiting services. It converts average industry ranks and ratings into a linear composite index capping at 1.0000, which indicates a consensus No. 1 prospect across all services. The 247Sports Composite Rating is the industry's most comprehensive and unbiased prospect ranking and is also used to generate 247Sports Team Recruiting Rankings. More details ... All major media services share an equal percentage in the 247Sports Composite Rating. The composite index equally weights this percentage among the services that participate in a ranking for that specific prospect. A composite strength meter, indicated by red bars, illustrates the total number of industry services that have ranked the prospect. A full strength meter indicates the prospect has been ranked by all industry services participating in the composite. All industry services have a different philosophy on number of "stars" distributed with each class. The 247Sports Composite Rating assigns stars based on an approximate average distribution of stars from the industry. 247Sports produces ratings that contribute to the 247Sports Composite. These ratings can also be viewed along side the 247Sports Composite for a comparison. 247Sports has one of the industry’s largest and most recognized national recruiting staffs. Led by industry veterans Barton Simmons and Jerry Meyer (basketball), 247Sports employs a staff of more than 50 reporters, analysts and evaluators that rank the nation’s elite high school football and basketball recruits from multiple class years. How 247Sports evaluates ... Each recruit we evaluate is assigned a numerical rating as well as a star rating. Ratings are determined by our recruiting analysts after countless hours of personal observations, film evaluation, and input from our network of scouts. Players are first grouped qualitatively with a star rating, then given a numerical rating based on their future potential, and finally ranked according to these numerical ratings. 110 - 101 = Franchise Player. One of the best players to come along in years, if not decades. Odds of having a player in this category every year is slim. This prospect has "can’t miss" talent. 100 - 98 = Five-star prospect. One of the top 30 players in the nation. This player has excellent pro-potential and should emerge as one of the best in the country before the end of his career. There will be 32 prospects ranked in this range in every football class to mirror the first round of the NFL Draft. 97 - 90 = Four-star prospect. One of the top 300 players in the nation. This prospect will be an impact-player for his college team. He is an All-American candidate who is projected to play professionally. 89 - 80 = Three-star prospect. One of the top 10% players in the nation. This player will develop into a reliable starter for his college team and is among the best players in his region of the country. Many three-stars have significant pro potential. 79 - below = Two-star prospect. This player makes up the bulk of Division I rosters. He may have little pro-potential, but is likely to become a role player for his respective school. Thanks sir! Makes me wish I'd passed math back in the day!! So, question about the last three guys on the 247 list (Jones, Robinson, Wesley) ... will they eventually be rated? I noticed on scout they all show some significant offers, but not on 247? I cannot STAND throwing away any possible drive at the end of the half.....go for the points. That whole final series was half-hearted and a waste of time. I know! That amazes me! 1:09 and one TO ... that's 10 plays or more! That says "I'm scared" or "well, maybe we won't lose as badly as people think"!! Anyway ... I like that the boys are competing! Maybe we can shock them in the 2nd half! Wow! Ok, never mind! I'll cut him some slack .. I guess they were just setting up the onside and the receiver pass!!!

In Defense of Mike Amos: One thing I know ... when we'd take hellish bus trips to SEMO, Nichols, UTM, or Valdosta, we'd get off the bus and the only folks I remember seeing (besided Mommas/Daddys) was Mike Amos and Troy Morgan and family! That meant a great deal to me. He's always been very kind to me and my family when I've seen him at games over the years. I don't run in the same circles as many of you and was away from Troy for years, so I'm not around Mike much. I know that "familiarity can breed contempt" sometimes. But still ... you can't question Mike's love for Troy! Go Troy!

Glad the boys got to have some fun! I'm not sharpest tool in shed, but a few things: Defense continues to play well ... gives us a chance in every game! If you don't turn ball over ... you have a chance in every game! Silvers (like all QBs) are a heckuva lot better when they're not on their back! Shuffling the OLine seemed to work! (I also like that lots of them got to play!) Reason for hope moving foward! App State is very good team! But, if we continue the things mentioned above ... we have a chance! Go Troy!!!

The last time I played organized football, I was 12 years old. I am not an expert on the game (someone once said that an expert is just a stranger with a briefcase, so pffft on that), but I am intelligent, observant and able to reason. Every year during spring and fall camp I hear this refrain: "The defense is much better than the offense", to which someone will reply "improvement on the defensive side always comes before improvement on the offensive side. Give the "o" time, they'll come around too." Let's apply logic and reason to that way of thinking. If the above is true on a micro level (short term training camps) it seems logical it would also be true on the macro level (overall program direction). I propose we are seeing this play out before our eyes. The defense has improved significantly since last season...I say even since game one of this season. The offense hasn't shown improvement at the same rate, perhaps the argument can be made that it hasn't improved at all. As we make this argument, let's remember, we played an entire game Saturday without our starting QB; heck, he wasn't even dressed. We are 6 games into a complete program overhaul. Am I happy we are 1-5 and have compiled that record in the manner we have? ABSOLUTELY NOT! Do I think we are will improve? ABSOLUTELY! I look for that improvement, however, to come over the long run, not overnight and I think we will see the defense continue to improve at a faster rate than the offense, at least in the short run. The program didn't get in this shape in 6 games, it's not going to return to its previous level of success in 6 games. A popular theme here is to bash the Bammers and the Barns and their projected sense of entitlement. Let's stop acting like them, like we are entitled to win just because we have a history of doing so. Let's acknowledge we have a Herculean task ahead of us and let's get supportive of the effort to rebuild. We will win again! Until that time, I will be here, offering my support. The winning, when it comes, will be that much sweeter for its absence. Well said sir! There's no "one" thing that leads to a winning culture ... and no "one" thing that leads to a losing culture. So many "Intangibles"! (want to, chemistry, heart, togetherness, mental toughness, etc) I played from 1st grade on, and the worst team record I experienced was our 85 team at Troy ... 6-4! I almost quit ... couldn't stand "Losing"! And, a good argument could be made that the 85 team was the most "talented" of my 4 years. (84-87)! The 86-87 teams of course had some special talent, but also had lots of guys like me that were "TOO" something (too small, too big, too slow, etc.) Anyway, as the saying goes ... wish we could "bottle" those intangibles ... I like what I hear from Coach Brown. Taking responsibility ... being positive and optimistic ... no short cuts ... hard work!! Coach Brown wasn't my top choice for the job ... but have been impressed and have confidence in he and the staff! Go Troy!
