The first few weeks will be rocky, but around mid-season everything should be fine. In the long run, Barker/Smith might even be more productive than Silvers. Smith is only a Sophomore so we could get even three years out of him.

When is move-in day? I read somewhere more inspections are needed, but we should be close to move-in day...

Troy Football: 2018 Trojans Preview and PredictionTroy came up just short of a breakthrough in 2016, narrowly missing out on both a major upset (at Clemson) and a conference title. In 2017, it made good on both of those promises, pulling off a midseason stunner at LSU and finishing atop the Sun Belt standings en route to a school record for wins as an FBS program. Instead of heading for greener pastures, Neal Brown is still in charge, and despite some notable attrition, the roster is hardly in rebuilding mode. IMO this upcoming season might be our most crucial season in Troy FBS history. The past two years were the overture but now we really have to make some noise - the next two or three years (and esp this year!) will define the future of this program.
Why this year? Because we finally have everything in place:
- facilities: new state-of-the-art endzone building which will be one of the best among the G5 - coaches: one of the best coaching staffs G5 money can buy - recent success: marquee win over LSU, bowl wins, Top25 ranking, exciting last minute wins (vs Southern Miss, Akron, App St, Ark St, etc); all this has generated fan interest
If we can build on this, beat either Boise St or Nebraska and win most other games, manage to crack the Top 25 again and repeat all of this next year (vs Southern Miss and Missouri) - and vs NC State in 2020 then this program could become the Top G5 program in the South (minus the FL schools) and Top5 in the nation - and all this within the next two or three years. All these games are winnable. We don't even have to go 12-0, we need 10 wins per season and upset some of these P5 schools (and get ranked consistently).
Most likely we will lose our coaches soon, and UAB and USA are going to build new FB stadiums which will help them to attract better talent (and steal recruits from us) - so we really need to make sure that we do all of this over the next three years. We now have the coaches, facilities, favorable schedules, and recent success - we really need to use all of this to our advantage!

Don't worry, Ho always wants everyone to get fired... Barry, Drew, AD, even Kim Jong-Un,...

Rypien had a great spring game though. I think he will be more mature and reliable for Boise this year.
I am mostly worried about Boise's D. They have a Top 15 Defense this year, esp their run D seems tough. Starting a new QB against a Top 15 D is quite a task...

If we want to be the next Boise State or UCF, we should at least be confident discussing these things. Boise St and Nebraska are both beatable - we beat LSU last year and almost beat Clemson two years ago (and we beat Southern Miss while we were rebuilding)... I am sure our coaches and players see it that way. They defeated LSU, so they know it's possible and how its done.
Boise St is probably a must win. We can't afford losing to another G5 team at home (only issue is, they are more experienced and we play them in week1). The Nebraska game is also winnable, they run a new system, have a new coaching staff, young QB, and overall young team...

You can rewatch it on Facebook, it was streamed live.
Overall, I think Sawyer Smith looked somewhat better than Kaleb Barker. He used his feet quite a bit and kept the sticks moving. He seems to have better awareness. However, he also tends to overthrow the receivers sometimes.
T.Samuel could play in a Jernigan-type of role maybe. WR unit will be pretty strong with Willis, Letton and Douglas returning. Plenty of targets for the QBs.
Boise State will be a huge test. Apparently, Rypien had a great spring game and the first teamers totally destroyed the second teamers on both sides of the ball. Coach Brown said, that our QBs are nowhere near ready to face Boise yet.

Trojans get some preseason respect... _ _ _ _ _ The Huskers' slate features difficult Big Ten road games against Ohio State, Wisconsin, Michigan and IowaWeek 1 – Sept. 1 vs. Akron (Lincoln, Neb.) Week 2 – Sept. 8 vs. Colorado (Lincoln, Neb.) Week 3 – Sept. 15 vs. Troy (Lincoln, Neb.)While the Huskers do have a legitimate chance to start the season 3-0 and get some much-needed momentum headed into Big Ten play, Troy has proven it’s a Group of 5 program that’s simply not going to show up and roll over. Trojans head coach Neal Brown took a 2015 4-8 squad and has since flipped the script, going a combined 21-5 the past two seasons. Included in this run is the first Top 25 ranking by a Sun Belt team in 2016 and an eventual conference title to go with it. The Trojans also went into Baton Rouge last year and beat LSU on its own turf. Week 4 – Sept. 22 at Michigan (Ann Arbor, Mich.) ... athlonsports.com/college-football/nebraska-cornhuskers-2018-football-schedule-and-analysis

I liked our chances against Nebraska a lot more before they hired Scott Frost. It will be hands down the best offense we face and a tempo like we haven't seen before. Nebraska players will have to learn the new system first, most likely they won't be able to execute it perfectly early in the season...

Breaking in a new starting Qb is not easy, esp when playing a tough Boise St defense in week1 (they return 10 defensive starters and most backups. Their offense has some question marks though, Rypien is still not really producing like he should, Cozart is gone, and they have to replace some OLs + their top RB and star WR Cedric Wilson are both gone - but it's still Boise State. Could be a low scoring game. Btw, they really destroyed Southern Miss, ULL and LA Tech in recent years - it's time a southern G5 team sends them home with a loss).
The ULM game will be a challenge, too. Liberty is a trap game, App St is App St, and USA is a rivalry game... all of these games are potential L's. I like our chances against Nebraska, though.

Not sure why we should even play UAB (other than in bowl games) at the moment. We are in a much better position now. We are currently developing a new rivalry vs South Alabama, have a series with Southern Miss and some pretty good things going on (LSU win, Top25 appearance, bowl wins, brand new fb building opening soon, solid recruiting classes etc).
There is nothing to be gained by playing UAB at the moment. We should give UAB a few more years to develop their program, win some games and build that new stadium. I hope Troy and UAB will play each other in the future but not now (or in the next few years).
Longterm, I see UAB and USM as our biggest rivals (we all recruit the same players anyways)... it would make so much more sense to be in the same conference with them.

Watched last Thursday’s Practice … here are some observations: RBs: We all know Henderson is that type of back. Perkins is a bigger guy … but also can move. Daughtry-Frye was a very pleasant surprise! Fully healthy … and the kid must’ve put on 10 lbs or more of muscle … especially his lower body! Not only was he flying around on the outside … but very explosive up the middle as well! Smith was out … and we know he’s a good one too! DOTHAN EAGLE Fully recovered from a knee injury, Troy’s Jabir Daughtry-Frye could add more to Trojan offense"...“He’s gained weight. He’s gained strength through his redshirt year. We feel he can be an every-down running back, and this is his spring to prove it.” Daughtry-Frye, who said he now weighs 182 pounds, embraces the challenge. ..." Birmingham commits $90 million over 30 years for downtown stadium, Legacy Arena renovationwww.al.com/news/birmingham/index.ssf/2018/03/birmingham_commits_90_million.html_ _ _ Not sure if I like it, UAB will benefit from this and it might hurt our recruiting... On the other hand, we need more natural rivals (USA, USM, UAB are perfect rivals) and I think we are currently discussing a new series with UAB. Would be nice to play in a bowl game there btw... again I am not sure this is a good thing. UAB already has new training facilities, soon this stadium, they are already back recruiting hard... Soon, top fb operations facilities won't be the deciding factor anymore in recruiting, it's jut basics, must-haves... by 2020 UAB and Troy both will have nice stadiums and state-of-the-art training facilities. Therefore, coaching staff, location, NFL draft track record, fanbase and of course W's will be the key deciding factors in our main recruiting area (at our level)... of course, until the entire upgrading process starts again (it's crazy, everyone is investing heavily in facilities but there is no real advantage if everyone is doing it).
