Birmingham commits $90 million over 30 years for downtown stadium, Legacy Arena renovationwww.al.com/news/birmingham/index.ssf/2018/03/birmingham_commits_90_million.html_ _ _ Not sure if I like it, UAB will benefit from this and it might hurt our recruiting... On the other hand, we need more natural rivals (USA, USM, UAB are perfect rivals) and I think we are currently discussing a new series with UAB. Would be nice to play in a bowl game there btw... again I am not sure this is a good thing. UAB already has new training facilities, soon this stadium, they are already back recruiting hard... Soon, top fb operations facilities won't be the deciding factor anymore in recruiting, it's jut basics, must-haves... by 2020 UAB and Troy both will have nice stadiums and state-of-the-art training facilities. Therefore, coaching staff, location, NFL draft track record, fanbase and of course W's will be the key deciding factors in our main recruiting area (at our level)... of course, until the entire upgrading process starts again (it's crazy, everyone is investing heavily in facilities but there is no real advantage if everyone is doing it).

Difference is... this isn't an on-campus stadium for them. And it'll be co-owned by the City of Birmingham.
It'll help UAB's recruiting. But Troy's north end zone facility is going to exceed anything UAB will have for football as far as player/coaching facilities go.
And like you said... some recruiting will come down to history, winning seasons, championships, NFL draft history, etc. Troy wins in all of those categories.

And don't forget the Crows chicken is better in Troy than in Brundige...and I'm sure anything better than B'ham has.

It's really more of an off-campus city stadium that ua'sb will play in. New and nice, sure, but a city stadium. Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't Troy University own the Vet completely now? If anyone knows I'd appreciate a refresher on that.

Pretty much solidifies UAB will never have an on campus stadium

Did you all follow the craziness of the tweet that UAB sent out with a pic of their new stadium? Whomever handles the athletics Twitter account at UAB released a pic of the Bham skyline behind their new stadium, only problem was it was a pic of Colorado State's nice stadium with UAB's logo's. It was a fun twitter moment until they deleted it. Such a UAB thing to do!

Populous, the design firm for the new stadium project, was the same firm that designed Colorado State's stadium. They supplied UAB with the design graphics, hence the mix-up. They also designed Minnesota and Baylor's stadiums, so it could have easily been one of those instead.

If, and when, this new stadium is completed, I might be wiling to go to Birmingham to watch a football game. Until then, I have no desire to do so.

If, and when, this new stadium is completed, I might be wiling to go to Birmingham to watch a football game. Until then, I have no desire to do so. And this pretty much sums up UAB's issue. There are a lot of casual fans that just won't go because of the location and quality of Legion Field. Outside a lack of adequate practice and training facilities, the stadium has been UAB's biggest downfall in recruiting and public perception. The practice and football operations facilities are now in place and we are finally seeing the new stadium come to fruition. Hope to see Troy back in B'ham soon... in the new stadium, of course.

Not sure why we should even play UAB (other than in bowl games) at the moment. We are in a much better position now. We are currently developing a new rivalry vs South Alabama, have a series with Southern Miss and some pretty good things going on (LSU win, Top25 appearance, bowl wins, brand new fb building opening soon, solid recruiting classes etc).
There is nothing to be gained by playing UAB at the moment. We should give UAB a few more years to develop their program, win some games and build that new stadium. I hope Troy and UAB will play each other in the future but not now (or in the next few years).
Longterm, I see UAB and USM as our biggest rivals (we all recruit the same players anyways)... it would make so much more sense to be in the same conference with them.

We should play UAB. There're close, have a good football team, and it always looks good to beat them.
