It’s summer, so a quick question. My fellow Trojan alumni were discussing the other night over some cold snacks the state of Trojan Athletics. It was a great conversation as all of discussed what we thought we needed to do to become a yearly powerhouse (or at least contend) in athletics year over year.
Or is it even possible for Troy to be at or contending for the top on a very regular basis in its athletic programs? Everyone there was an alumni and a financial supporter of Troy but a couple were questioning their continued maximum effort of support if we were destined to be middle of the pack program. They would still support and love the program but not to the maximum. One mentioned as he got older, finishing his career and close to grandkids, the time investment of supporting consist average was maybe not worth it anymore.
Someone mentioned it’s been a decade or more since one of the big three fan programs won a conference title. Has it really been that long ? I believe only womens basketball has tasted a conference title lately. And if memory serves, maybe Golf and/or tennis won a title 6/7 years ago?
Anyway it was an interesting conversation, wanted to share. Are we just a middle of the road program ? I though about that one. Maybe, maybe not. Money can solve some issues but not all. Maybe if we just focus on one or two sports ? Maybe we are permanently shacked due to our location and size ? Don’t know. Any thoughts?

This is a great conversation to have. I have always supported Troy but started to contribute more in recent years based on my age and income but at times it has felt like I’m throwing my money away when it hasn’t translated to Ws. I’m still Riding on wins over Nebraska and LSU, and I am in dyer need of another significant win over a P 5 and a conference championship and bowl game win! What keeps me contributing is the optimism and the improvements on campus. I am thrilled with the improvements to our facilities and it seems to keep getting better ! We all know that we need an indoor practice facility and my guess is that if we have a winning season with Coach Sumrall it will happen. I also like the fact that we are redoing the baseball stadium to match the football and basketball facilities. The golf facility is phenomenal. The other area of optimism is the athletic Director recognizing that we have been mediocre at best but he has been Able to pull the trigger and get new coaches where needed! This makes me continue to contribute because I see a bright future My hope and expectation is that we should be winning conference championships and dominating the Sun Belt the way we used to! Perhaps the formula is a combination of Facilities Coaching Athletes No particular order Just some random thoughts, but I will keep contributing based on all of the above! I think the last three years has been a big kick in the nuts but I’m extremely excited

Baseball was in a regional in 2018.

The last one before that was 2010 Basketball - Troy has not won a conference championship since 2010, 12 years ago. Last time before that was 2004. 2017 was a tournament bid, and one in 2003. We won the conference tournament in 2017 Meh. Last one before that was 2003! Baseball - last time we won the conference was 2013. Last time we won the conference tournament was 2006, last time before that 1997. Last times we made the regionals was 2018, 2013, 2011. Lost in the 1st round. Yeah, guess my buddy was right. We are pretty middle of the road. With every decade we pop up and win something. It’s not for me because I will always be all in but I can see where people have a great malaise about being 100% in with time and money with such mediocre results over and over. I don’t blame my buddy, we wants to invest in some other things instead of all Troy like his family and have experiences we hasn’t had before. Troy has limitations that maybe we just can’t overcome. Hope springs eternal. You got to win. The Administration needs to be and get serious about that. They need to find a way, it’s what they get paid to do. Get creative, do something different. I’ll be there no matter what happens.

Your obviously all in but we need more than a couple old P5 wins to increase and MAINTAIN fans, supporters and followers. Do you think we have a built in ceiling? Or believe we can build a true juggernaut, so to speak ?

I think the university is investing in their facilities, I also think they are willing to go and try and get a winning coach in each of the sports that we have! I don’t know what the future holds as far as wins and losses go but I do know that we have an opportunity based on what has been invested so far. We are at a crossroads and I’m hoping that the investment will translate into success noches in football but in all of our sports!

That’s good. At times he can stroke a check, other times he cheap as hell. He has made some bobo calls.

What gives you an indication that this administration isnât serious about winning? They want to win. But do they believe we can by doing what everyone else is doing ? In our friend discussion I referenced, someone asked can anyone name one thing the Admin has done that is truly out of the ordinary to separate us, that prepared for little ole Troy the opportunity to climb that ladder ? Nobody could think of anything. Iâm sure the cold snacks didnât help. But pondering more, we are Troy, we need to think outside the box to climb the ladder. Do some different things. We do what everyone else is doing, we will stay middle of the pack. Have we been inventive ? We always need to ask questions of the people leading the program. Question their desires, motivations and plans. Thatâs how we get better. Those folks that state we should blindly follow and not question their decisions, donât have the best desires for the program. Feedback always is good. This was brought up in our get together, Maybe we shouldnât be so involved, just sit back and not question, give some money and let things happen. Of course that usually leads to (The HC we don’t speak of) Lindsay situation, coaching for 10 years, destroying a program.

What are YOUR out-of-the-box suggestions?? I'm all ears. Oh Lord, if we are relying on an Asset Manager and small business owner from the Troy message board to come up with the new ideas to Climb the ladder, we might be trouble. lol If one wants a different result, got to do different things. In our little crew we came up with several things. The more we discussed and thought about it, Troy’s built in limitations might just lead Troy to be what it is and ever can be. Good and fun discussions anyway. Can we name any out of box ideas we have implemented?

The people who I know and respect opinions from that follow the world of college football far closer and are far smarter about it than I care to be usually have this general take of TROY: great, respectable football program that's fun to watch and can come from out of nowhere to win against anyone but will never become a powerhouse due to built-in limitations such as being ill-equipped to compete regionally with major historied programs and being destined to be a stepping stone program for up-and-coming coaches who will succeed but move on; thus, always a stepping forward/stepping back scenario.
I find this an accurate assessment and as much as I love TROY football, it will take an incredible amount of consistent momentum and "can't miss" staffing decisions to rise above these sorts of hindrances. Can it be done? Yes. Vegas odds on that happening? Slim. We got pretty lucky that CLB landed here tarnished without much of a path or perhaps desire to move to something else. I would love it if a "Bear Bryant" would decide to land here, put roots deep, and make a clear mark of legacy in this one program but that's not probable in today's football world.

If we recognize the built in limitations and work to overcome them. if we have a coach that is successful we need to do what it takes to keep them. If the NIL is the new way we need to figure out what we need to do to get our athletes deals. we must continue to upgrade our facilities. Improvise Adapt Overcome

I know it has been 35 years ago and a different era but 1987 has to go down as the single best year for the big three sports in Troy history. Football D2 National Champs, Basketball D2 Final Four, Baseball D2 National Champs.
I firmly believe we have the facilities to now win the conference in all three sports and maybe make a run in the NCAA's in basketball and baseball. That said the portal changes a lot up or down.

If you have to ask your customer could they list out any of good things you did for them, instead of being able to walk in and being able list out all the great, new and inventive items you produced for them, You lost. So can you name one out of the box idea our admin has executed to make the program bigger and better.

One of the things that was done several years ago is The Power T I think we made a great move renaming the University from Troy state to Troy but we had alot of logos and we were not creating an identity. Now although we have several logos to choose from, clearly the Power T is the most Recognizable

If basketball suddenly ceased to exist, I would not even know it. I used to watch baseball but now consider it too slow and a bit boring. I've got too many other things to do. I'm waiting on TROY to get an ice hockey team.

All sports besides football TROY can compete for national titles. We have hurdles to overcome but the sports other than football are built for any team with right leadership and player mix to make consistent deep runs into the respective tournaments.
Football is an entirely different conversation because it is designed currently for the power 5 schools with the most money to dominate. TROY can compete with anyone again with the right mix of leadership and player talent.
Someone mentioned it but I will echo…
TROY can NEVER afford to botch a hire for the following programs in order of importance: 1 Football 2 Mens Basketball 3 Womens Basketball 4 Mens Baseball 5 Womens Softball
These are the most watched and recognized sports that TROY participates in. We CANNOT afford even 1 year of mediocrity in any of them and that starts with making sure we always hire the very best person for the money we have to spend.
