man that is painful to say - that it's time for Jack to go, but wow, it's been 25+ years I firmly believe Jack and his right hand man are holding Troy back to a point.

one thing we can agree on Hemi - if we are hiring a new A.D. - maybe we should hire a new Chancellor first and let he or she hire the new A.D. - hire a retired A.D. not necessarily from Troy, to serve in the interim and do this thing right by taking our time, we have time on our hands as nothing right now from an A.D standpoint is urgent - just my .02
still love Jack, still love Larry, still love Don M. - Go Troy!

I'm often baffled by postings here. This thread is no exception.
I grew up in Montgomery. I spent many years living firmly within the metro-ATL area. I've done a good deal of traveling and have been to many places both very large and some I'd bet you'd have to Google. I graduated from Troy. So did my wife (she grew up here). As soon as I transferred internally to a position which allowed me to work from home, we got the hell out of Atlanta. With a reliable Internet connection, I could literally have moved anywhere I wanted. I landed in Troy and I'm right glad we did. Sure, there are some conveniences and benefits I miss from living in a larger area. But the positives far outweigh the negatives for us. It's a small town often with an even smaller feel. Perfect? Far from it. In all my travels, I haven't seen perfect.
So what bewilders me about some comments are the general attitude about our school. You love it. I love it too. But the reality is, in our world today, Troy is either a stepping stone on the path to bigger or better things or it's a final resting place. Bigger and better are 100% subjective here. Just because Hartwell or anyone else leaves does not equate to me that something is wrong internally. He's a young enough guy that he has easily 25 more years working if he so chooses. If his missus is for moving up the ladder, more power to him if he or anyone else should choose to leave us. If you've done a good job while here, I'll wish you nothing but the best and I'll never assume that something must be up.
That's just me and my opinion. You're free to disagree if you'd like. You'll still be wrong but go ahead and disagree.

It will be interesting to see if he has success in Utah. John whole personal and college admin career has been in the South. Fundraising is about personal contact and relationships. His pool of knowledge and contacts might be small in Utah. Reverse it, I don't see a guy that has lived and worked in New England his entire life coming to Troy and having great success as AD. Possible but the deck would be stacked against him. One positive is the locale: Logan is beautiful, right next to the mountains. Troy has trailer parks and a lead plant. They win that one. Some don't rate money at the top of the reasons in considering career choices. Maybe he does ? John is good people, hope he does well. SF, why the heck did you pick Troy as your school of choice if your distain for its town and people are so vial? Just wonderin'! No worries redwaver. No let's breakdown what I said about the city of Troy above : "Troy has trailer parks and a lead plant." This is true. I chose Troy State University for various personal reasons. The University has brought more to my life than I can ever repay. The City of Troy is what it is, it is understanding that locals like yourself defend it as a paradise because it is your home but in the big scope of most peoples understanding, their is truly nothing there. It is what it is and that is ok. Hey, Publix is coming! I have many locals who are life long friends. Love them. But I do disdain the locals for their lack of true support for the University. Many go to a Troy football game on Saturday because they got free tickets and say they are true supporters. A lot will not even do that, they have to watch Auburn and Alabama. A lot of locals go out of their way to do what they can not to support the students that bring so much to the town. Etc., etc. A lot of locals do not realize the precious gift they have in the University that is the town and have heard many locals bad mouth the University to no end. Makes we sad. Mayor Reeves is a friend from our college days, he gets it. There are a lot of local supporters like yourself that are good, wish we had more. Go Trojans Redwaver !

Best wishes to Hartwell and his family! He's certainly leaving Troy Athletics in better shape than he inherited almost 3 years ago.
It will be interesting who "The Powers" find to replace John's shoes.
The RIGHT choice, we continue to improve in all areas of athletics. The WRONG choice? I fear our Div I status could be in jeopardy.

Mayor Reeves is a friend from our college days, he gets it. There are a lot of local supporters like yourself that are good, wish we had more. Go Trojans Redwaver ! You have every right to disparage to your hearts content! It just that usually, if you loved a university enough to spend several years of your life there you accept and trumpet the good things you found and accept and understand the things you didn't find so good. Every city has its faults, every city has its town idiots. Last time I visited Miami the hotel clerk told us NEVER go outside from the hotel in groups of less than 3! Never heard that in Troy! Frankly I'm NOT from Troy ("understanding locals LIKE YOURSELF"), I'm not even from Alabama but I do love the rural country lifestyle. At my age I've been around a bit and I promise you, there are things worse than trailer parks and lead plants and people worse than "rednecks"! Take an evening strole down by the old Orange Bowl next time you are in Miami or stop for a beer on the south side of Chicago or in depressed areas of Detroit. Even park your car 10 blocks away from Legion Field. Yep, every town has its dark side and local oddities be it places or people so why not find the good sides and talk about those and say a prayer for improvement for the other side. I've never known a point to be made or a solution to be found through negativism. If you have "distain" for folks not supporting something you hold dear you will have an awful lot of distain to deal with in your life. To infer you love a place you constantly express loath for is like telling your wife, " for an ugly person I really love you"! Doubt that would win you a wonderfully romantic weekend! Just sayin'! Troy and its people are what they are and that's not likely to change and that's not all that bad. I agree I wished they supported Troy University more than they do because many profit from its presence in the town but truth be told, some probably would rather it not be there so they could live even more secluded lives. Go Trojans Saintfloridian, we are all brothers and sisters in Rebuilding The Wall!

If Mr. Hartwell and his family are happy, I am happy for them. But I am not happy for Troy to lose him. I wish he could have done more to finish what he started. Mr. Hartwell is an exceptionally good AD and we will have a difficult time attracting someone of his caliber for what we can pay. Our only hope is another like him who is on the way up, just hope he/she will stay a little longer if we get a good one.

The article in the Utah paper is just not true. The softball money was raised personally by Melanie Davis. I was on the committee, on every conference call, and it was her relationships that made that stadium happen. I don't even think the new AD was the AD when the softball project started. It was Dr. Hawkins and Melanie Davis that did the fundraising. I do think that Hartwell made some tough decisions, but it is sad that he pretty much cleaned house of all the long time coaches and then didn't stay to support all of the new hires. The new hires are the ones that are probably upset since he was their support and probably made many promises to them. They just lost their boss and the person that hired them. The next guy/girl may want someone else. Maybe he was brought in to do the dirty work and now they want someone who can bring in the money and rebuild some of the relationships with the old coaches, which in turn make 20+ years of alumni happy. I do think Troy athletics is in a better place and I wish him well.

I consider John a friend but my only disappointment was I thought he came here with a problem to solve and as great as he has been, the problem is still unfinished or not come rely solved and I would have LOVED seeing him see it through. HOWEVER, it's his life and livelihood and if we are not able to compete financially then that was the right choice for him and his family and I wish them the best. Utah is a beautiful state with a lot of family opportunities. We will find another AD and we will move on......HOPEFULLY in the same positive direction.

I do think Troy athletics is in a better place and I wish him well. John did make a lot of changes when he arrived and I firmly believe because the majority of the fan base wanted that done. You can't argue that years of losing seasons usually result in changes no matter who you are or where you are. About the only question left unanswered as whether the changes netted more success lies in men's basketball and football. The first is at a point where improvement has become an absolutely necessity now for job security and football, being the main money source, needs to improve quickly but Coach Briwn is no magician and deserves his opportunity. I agree that other coaches legacy for things they did is and should be deserved and recognized.....both good and bad. Troy needed change!!! We had become athletically stale for whatever the reason. As far as coaches feeling vulnerable due to Johns leaving... Win and you have no worries. All our coaches are big boys and girls and knew from the beginning the temperament of the jobs they were seeking. They will be fine! Go Trojans!

Still believe that is not all what this move is about. You are correct, he did clean house which was soooo needed. The upswing in most sports besides football and mens basketball are a testament to that.

Chancellor Hawkins: "Utah State contacted Hartwell 3 days after Pitt hired its AD. We won't be that aggressive." Is that Hawkinspeak for: 1) Holy spit! We didn't see THAT One coming! 2) Well, it's summertime. Booky's at the beach, Doug and crew are on vacation in Europe and the wife and I NOW have to do Trojan Tour for the next two weeks. We'll get 'round to it in due course y'all. 3) Holy SPIT y'all! We didn't see THAT one coming! 4) We have decided to hold a summer camp for training athletic directors. ONLY those who attend will be eligible for consideration and summer doesn't end until late September. 5) We've sent our AD recruiters out to visit all Div II and Juco Administrators, focusing on the South Florida regions as we've good counsel that there are many qualified candidates to consider. It will take much time to vett out all those applicants. 6) Larry and Janice won't be back in Troy from summer vacation until September. Mike Amos is out to lunch until September. 7) We had some good candidates lined up from UA's B school, but just heard they all have another 29 weeks on unemployment before they are called back to work in 2016. 8) We lost Steve Dennis' cellphone number. 9) Our clerk is on disability leave and we can't find all those other applications from 3 years ago. 10) Holy SPIT! We didn't see THAT one coming? 11) Maybe Tony can absorb another job? We can give him another $5,000 raise. Just think of all the money we'll save!!! 12) H&ll, everyone's at the beach on Sundays when we meet at Sisters! 13) Booky, did we see THAT one coming??? We need a full report by September 1! The MORE things change, the MORE things stay the same.

#5. I would have no problem hiring the AD at Florida Gulf Coast. They are winning in all sports and have come out of now where to do it. The school was a Junior College years ago. Considering they are competing against UF, FSU, Miami, UCF, USF, FIU and FAU, it really is remarkable.
