We all knew this was coming. It was just a matter of when. He is great at what he does and it's a big loss for us. But like Hemi said...anyone that experiences success at Troy will be moving on in due time and this will become the norm. The question now is...who can continue what Hartwell has started and go beyond that? We certainly don't want another Steve Dennis.

Utah State is winning in football and I believe basketball also. I think the possibility of him being here through three loosing seasons in both sports could have hurt his prospects in the future. A fine man I met several times. I wish him the best.

I say make Hemi the AD. He's at all the games anyhow and he couldn't do worse than Dennis

I say make Hemi the AD. He's at all the games anyhow and he couldn't do worse than Dennis Jet rides and access to the free beer!! I'm in!! In all honesty John has set the groundwork for Troy Athletics to take off and whomever replaces him will have big shoes to fill!

That would make you " the Rolex wearing, diamond ring wearing, jet flying, limousine riding" AD. I do agree the new AD won't have two many coaching decisions. Men's basketball could be the exception? I also seen where the architects have submitted plans for the field house so hopefully we are in good shape there. I do wonder how his leaving will effect the moods at Trojan Tour or if he is even going on it now?

This is terrible news. DT84 had sworn off liquor but will be relapsing and cheating on beer asap.

Interesting. A guy from Mobile, went to college in Charleston, did a lot of work at Ole Miss, becomes the AD at Troy. Seems like a perfect resume for a future AD at a Power 5 school in the South. Utah State paying a little more, don't believe John was into chasing the nickel. Something amiss. Couldn't agree more. What has he done, really? Let me start by saying that I am a HUGE HARTWELL FAN, and CONGRATULATIONS to him and his family. BUT something is amiss here. He made some good hires, men's bball still questionable but the inherited mess he got still gets a pass, woman's obviously better, some with soccer, golf, tennis, and VERY EARLY with the regional in Talley. Fired a coach that was in place 25 years... Hasn't built a building, hasn't broken ground on end zone, did some renovations, but??? Football, jury still out, men's bball see above, woman's bball looks to be on the uptick FOR SURE, but was there any other direction for it? Softball same, baseball new next year. It just doesnt make sense unless something else went down. We haven't hired the opening that Andrew left, now John, just not sure what could have happened. I am sure it was about money, always is, but maybe for staff more than personal?? Those guys see coaches being hired, making good money, and they are working 18-20 hours EVERY GAME DAY and probably 10-12 hours on Fri/Sun, and 8+ each weekday, and no measurable increase??? You got to wonder, boy from the South chasing gold in Utah? ? Don't get it...

Both have underperformed during his tenure and one with his hire. I think if football goes sub .500 next year and basketball struggles again it would really hurt his resume. Utah State is having success in football right now so it will be a easy transition. I firmly believe this played a part

John whole personal and college admin career has been in the South. Fundraising is about personal contact and relationships. His pool of knowledge and contacts might be small in Utah. Reverse it, I don't see a guy that has lived and worked in New England his entire life coming to Troy and having great success as AD. Possible but the deck would be stacked against him. One positive is the locale: Logan is beautiful, right next to the mountains. Troy has trailer parks and a lead plant. They win that one. Some don't rate money at the top of the reasons in considering career choices. Maybe he does ? John is good people, hope he does well.

With John leaving - its time to rally men - get the pocketbooks out and go ask everybody to step up their game financially - heard UAB alums committed $17.5 million since they shut the program down - hope that is not what it takes at Troy - we must increase revenues via ticket sale but also by individual donations if we want to compete - I loved Troy yesterday, I love Troy today and I will damn sure love Troy forever - so let's go hire a quality AD and help him make it happen
Go Trojans!

This news is very unsettling. He must be leaving because something is amiss at Troy and/or in his relationship with his boss. Utah State is a step down (Utah and Boise run that state).
I fear the end zone project has stalled or is being reconsidered. Men's basketball has been unfortunate. Even baseball has been surprisingly underwhelming.
Troy pays very poorly (especially in non-director positions), but I don't understand how a school with the same athletic budget as Troy could pay more than twice the salary.

Anyone that has spent anytime around John at all knows his people skills are second to none. He will be successful at Utah St because of who he is and his knowledge in the world of business.

School budget has shrunk, tuition has been going up and enrollment is flat. But we are building building left and right and increased football salaries With the new staff. Leaves me puzzled as to what the actual state of Troy is financially?

troystet - we have seen Larry Blakeney go, we have seen Don Maestri go, we have seen many other coaches go based on your statement above

I love Dr. Hawkins but maybe it is time for NEW leadership - again, big Jack fan here, but maybe it's time
