SCOOP by joshboutwell Picked up a couple this week: www.troymessenger.com/2024/05/17/troy-lands-commitment-from-cal-transfer-marquez-dortch/?utm_source=site&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=recirculationOn Friday, wide receiver Marquez Dortch announced his decision to transfer to Troy University from the University of California at Berkley. Dortch is a 6-foot, 170-pound speedster from Lucedale, Miss., who started his college career at Mississippi State. Dortch played for George County High School, where he earned Alabama-Mississippi All-Star honors as a senior. He recorded 41 catches for 660 yards and seven scores as a senior with 207 yards and another score in kickoff returns...... .....Also on Thursday, Troy earned a commitment from junior college (JUCO) defensive back Daivon Nelson. Nelson is a sophomore at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas. The 6-foot-3-inch, 190-pound Tempe, Ariz., native recorded 18 tackles, three tackles-for-loss, nine pass breakups and an interception last season. Nelson played cornerback, safety and nickelback at Hutchinson. He committed to Troy over an offer from Western Michigan and will come to Troy with three years of eligibility remaining. Troy finishes with a current RPI of 52 and no bid to the NCAA tournament. I am seriously worried for this team next year. There is a class full of seniors leaving, including Libby Baker, who kind of went under the radar for the number of contributions she has made over the last 4 years. Newell has completed his second season and below are some thoughts: The Good: -He scheduled a very weak out of conference schedule this year since he knew he was losing a generational pitcher, so the record isn't terrible. -He picked up a couple of JUCO kids that actually contributed some power (Brake and Boltz). They both need to cut down on Ks and up the average, but 21 HRs was much needed in this year's lineup, though it took him half the season to figure out that they needed to be the ones playing over his recruited HS kids. He adjusted though, so that means he can swallow the pride. -5 players batted above .300 (it has been a while since that happened). Only 2 coming back though. -Made it to the final four in the Sunbelt tournament. Libby Baker played out of her mind after being snubbed for conference honors. -The Money kid came on strong and gave some decent pitching performances in the last part of the year, so I think there is something to build on. The Bad: -He inherited a team his first year with both Baker and Johnson, and honestly it might be the best pitching combo Troy will have, and he didn't properly utilize it. At some point he gave up on Baker pitching that year and Johnson was out of gas by the end of the season (after 4 years of a crazy number of innings). Troy would have made the NCAA tournament if he had Baker performing as she did this year. What a waste of talent. -Better get in the portal and find an ACE. -I heard that the "Mullins" recruits and the "Newell" recruits had some strife - not good - especially since these seniors are going to be missed more than I think they all realize. The Outlook: -Help the players that aren't Division 1 and are never going to play find somewhere else to play. Tell them to get in the portal, call your coaching friends, and find them a spot. Troy has to get athletes that will match the conference leaders (UL, USA, and Texas State). -Find an ACE (on repeat) -Schedule games that will help RPI. I know that winning record is nice to have, but we have to find a way to get an at-large bid if we can't beat UL. -Find some more JUCO players that can already hit. You have two seasons of proof to look at - they can already hit in college. The panhandle conference is one of the best softball conferences and a lot of those kids are good enough they just didn't have parents that could put them in big time travel ball. -Recruit the kids of alumni - one is going to South AL and one is going to Virgina Tech. Please respond with any additional insights. Thanks for your in-depth, qualified analysis.

Let’s freaking go! That’s one down. Men of Troy shine, whip Cajuns 16-5 in 7 innings.

Also do we have any kind of depth chart from spring? like where is everyone at? cornhole overheard that we are shallow at many positions. Was told 22 newcomers would be on board this summer. Better be some Ballers in that bunch.

It is ALWAYS interesting to hear and see individual FANS (sometimes including me) “take away / opinion” from T-Day field activities. After spending the day watching some tag football, activities reminiscent of my elementary years: Punt, pass and kick, and an impromptu gymnastics meet break out … I have NOTHING to say, share, or speculate about this year’s version of Troy Football‼️ Let’s ALL (since it seems many were not in Troy today) get together in 126 days (18 weeks) and continue this discussion after a real game with these coaches & players 👍🏼⚔️ In the meantime, let us all pray over the next THREE days we do not hear “The P_____” mentioned in the same sentence with any current member of our roster 🙏🏼❣️🙏🏾 Lest we forget, "The Portal giveth, and the Portal taketh". We have depth problems to address at several positions.

I missed today as well. I've only heard positives about Coach Parker and this years' team. We knew really early that Fester was trouble and that Sumrall should be on WWE. Coach Parker knows where his feet are and what we expect of him. I say let the man do his work. This ^^^. HCGP spoke to our group shortly after, he knows where we're at, and knows where we need to "get to". Gerad seems to have realistic perspective.

Defense wins the day… Kinda concerning that our HC is an offensive mind… I see a very long season ahead. Buckle up, Trojans… I see a very very long season ahead. DA post of the day award goes to Possum. Congrats! OUR Board has its balanced share of glass half full/glass half empty keyboard Coaches over the years. FAN is short for fanatic, we are all fanatic about ("One Troy") Troy Athletics. DA's pull for D Ala Team, D Auburn Team an' D South Team.

Our new Coache's format provided much incentive for the D and went to great lengths to protect and evaluate individuals and their performance. Hard to parlay today's results into a seasonal outlook.

Coaches kids often make really good players. Austin's resume speaks for itself. "Cross played for both Pike Liberal Arts School and Charles Henderson during his high school career, leading PLAS to an AISA State Championship in 2021-2023 and helping CHHS make it to just its second ever State Championship appearance in school history in 2022-2023. During his junior campaign, Cross was named a finalist for the AISA Mr. Basketball, earned All-State honors and won The Messenger’s Winter Athlete of the Year. He averaged 21.2 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. As a senior, Cross won The Messenger’s Player of the Year, was named Class 5A Player of the Year and was a finalist for Mr. Basketball. He also earned All-Messenger, Dothan Eagle Super 12 and All-State honors as he averaged 23.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.7 steals per game." The Scoop by joshboutwell Former Charles Henderson star Austin Cross will be coming home to Troy to play for his father, Scott Cross, as he committed to play college basketball at Troy University this weekend. Cross, who graduated from Charles Henderson last year, has been attending Florida Coastal Prep Sports Academy in Fort Walton, Fla. “The season went great,” Cross said of playing in prep school. “I lived in a beach house with a couple of my teammates, so that was fun. My teammates that I lived with were great and we had a bunch of different people from different countries that we played with. I got to learn a lot being down there.”..... He tallied 26 tackles, 4.5 tackles-for-loss, one sack and three pass breakups in 2023. Fils-Aime’ is also a legacy at Troy University as his sister, La’Tia Fils-Aime’, played for the women’s basketball team from 2015 through 2018. “(Troy) has been a school I always wanted to go to ever since I watched my sister play basketball there,” Fils-Aime’ said of his decision to commit to Troy. “I used to go to a lot of football games and it just makes sense to go back home.” Troy Messenger

Now that I have read the article. Young folks are being told that a degree is a bad investment. They calculate the cost of a degree and the student loans that follow them to the grave against potential earnings and opt out. I have 3 degrees and make a good salary working for a company. My salary is nowhere near what two of my wealthiest friends make working for themselves without multiple degrees. One friend does have a BS from Troy, and he cleans dryer vents. He makes much more money than I do. My second friend has no degree and he sells and installs window blinds. He also invested in rental properties and is now a multi millionaire at age 50. College is overpriced and the cost is not based on return on investment. For example, a nursing student at Troy and a liberal arts student pay the same, but one graduate has earning potential more than the other. College is broken and kids are starting to see that it can quickly go from an investment to a scam. I'm in the camp of some degrees being bad investments. Most people know this, but I dropped out of Troy after three failing quarters and never took another college course. College is not for everyone, hard work goes a long way and we need more electricians, plumbers, mechanics and HVAC people. Troy U might best take a look at 2-4 year Technical degrees??
