James Madison followed their script hiring a proven HC from lower ranks like they did with the prior two HC's. They hired Bob Chesney from Holy Cross

Personally I want a guy who can win and is consistent. Jon was a great hire but what if the next unproven guy goes 4-8/5-7 for 3 years? What if the guy after him does too? At least with Clark we know he can win with less. Dude had UAB winning conference championships and they are like Tulane without the money. I don’t think we can have both. The table is set. We just need to keep the train on the tracks That's fair. I do think giving either Craddock or Gasparato a deal to try and keep it going would be an acceptable route too. I'm not sure which I favor more though. Guess Gasparato is more trusted though since he was named interim?

Blew me away before they hired Uncle Fester. And only one on that list does the same tonight. Maybe I'm missing something but he has only been coaching eight years, two of them as a D2 RB coach, one in HS, only thing he has coached is RB, never been a coordinator and was 2-2 as interim HC I was saying Jon was my choice when the hired (The HC we don’t speak of).

If last year at the end of the season you would have told me that Sumrall would go to a G5 school and Craddock was a likely replacement I would have thought things went downhill bad. However Craddock really earned my trust because the offense is significantly more explosive this season and overall looked much sharper.

This may be the Bourbon talking, but what is Neal Brown's buyout at wvu? Neal just might be tired of that place after 5 years. If ADBJ reads this forum, call up ole Neal for fun and see if he wants to go out a legend.

Craddock earned my respect as OC this year especially…. But I’m not sold on him being our HC yet.

You bring up a great point I have not thought of till now. Coaches like everyone else likes money. Certain places have this or that appeal but the money is in the equation at first through third or at least fourth place. I AM NOT SUGGESTING THIS GUY AT ALL What happens when you get fired and have the amazing by out like Jimbo? If you really love coaching try to go somewhere and coach. All the money is there already or at least enough. People don’t go into social work for the money or teaching and believe it or not some doctors. So, I suppose there are football coaches too. However, most of us dream of winning the lottery and what you can do for your parents, siblings, and your kids and even a few fun things for yourself and spouse. I know it won’t happen but guys who love to coach and love to compete who bad luck befalls them just might be interested. This is why I thought of Scott Frost as an example. If Troy is 80% culture and the NIL and crap non sense does not sour all to the profession then he would be one to at least inquire hey are you interested? I grew up in Kansas and followed Nebraska football and know a lot about the state. The guy knows small towns too. This is just an example of combining all interests and finding a guy who maybe interested in a five year stint at a university and community pretty passionate about football. I have a friend who has decided to build a house in Troy and he told me that he just never thought of doing something in a certain way and when he did….bingo that was it! We obviously don’t have a lot of time but we can not afford another &@&$&!!&@$. Anyone have Frost’s number or anyone else that fits that mold?

Is Craddock a rah-rah guy like Sumrall though? Does his personality make you want to run through a brick wall? Craddock doesn't seem super energetic, unless I just haven't noticed it.

FWIW, my bro-in-law is a HSHC near the Birmingham area. He is a lifelong Bama fan and he likes to pick on me about Troy. He has had some interaction with many of the Troy coaches offer the years and he has been particularly impressed with Craddock. He coaches at a small school and has had great success recently. He says Craddock is actually the only coach in the state that stays in touch, stops by, and seems to genuinely attempt to build relationships. I am not sure if Craddock is the guy but that does not make me dislike him as a possibility. Bill Clark was a name that I had not thought of. I thought he would have been a great fit to replace Blakeney years ago but maybe now is the right timing for that fit.

A name that comes to mind, is Bill Clark… I wonder if his health issues have subsided enough to coach again.

At our level, it’s safe to say we will go through this every few years. I trust AD BJ and have no doubts he will nail this like he did JS. Another key to this process is great assistants who you can retain and promote. We’ve got future head coaches on this current staff.

You mean we shouldn’t go ask Saban to give us one of his “analysts” to help? lol.

The more I think about Bill Clark, the more I like him as a possibility. He’s worked with Craddock before and could possibly retain some continuity. If he’s successful and moves on perhaps Craddock would then have enough seasoning under two great HCs to slide into the HC role. I trust the Athletics department but the discussion is kinda fun.

How many hours has it been since Jon told Brent, twenty two? I bet he has worked 18 of those since that moment and had prepped about since Saturday.

First and foremost, I trust Brent Jones will make the right decision. There will be a hundred different factors that go in to this hire and is keyboard warriors will probably never know 99 of them. As for a few of the names being kicked around:
Bill Clark - Good coach and by all accounts a good human being. But bad backs are limiting in many ways and they usually only get worse.
Promoting Gas, Craddock, etc. - I realize promoting from within sometimes works out (Ryan Day, Lincoln Riley, Coach O) and success is much more likely if the head coach left of his own accord, but a lot of times it doesn’t work out. I know there’s the whole consistency and familiarity thing and trying to keep the team together, etc. but, (and maybe Ii am way off base) it seems kind of … lazy. Also, in some of the other “promote from within” cases, the assistant was very popular, well known, been there a while, etc. but that’s not the case with any of ours. Lastly, there won’t be any splash in the media or outside world (heck even to a lot of casual Troy fans) if we take this route.
We need a high energy, player’s coach, recruiting machine that these kids would be excited to play for every day. We need someone who would bring us lots of state and even some national press. Troy not being ranked still boggles my mind. I really want us to go after Carnell Williams. He would check all of those boxes. I don’t know if he’s be a great coach. Might not even be a good one (good/great assistants and coordinators would be super important). But he’s the only one out there that’s even in the realm of possibility that could/would give us something beyond Xs and Os.

What if I told you there was a coach that has a record of 118-53 at one school. This coach has FBS experience as an assistant. This coach is a great recruiter and loves Troy. This coach has won 7 out the last 10 conference titles with a current streak of 4 in a row. This coach could coach 10 more years and give us 10 straight SBC titles. Would that be a coach you would be interested in?

According to USA Today Coach Williams earns $900K at Auburn. If correct could Troy offer enough to convince him to leave his school?

I know he's getting old, but the man just wins.
