Someone mentioned it elsewhere but I'm gonna highlight it, even though there's literally nothing that could be done because I don't think anyone who would care about it is listening. I'm in a production world so I truly hate to pile on but honestly, the videography, audio, and production of the game's is just so busch league. I get the 'why' because at our level there isn't a big financial or personnel investment but there's some really low hanging fruit that could be picked to improve things significantly to make me feel just a little less like I'm watching some high school sports production and something to be taken a bit more seriously. One HUGE improvement would be an actual, functioning wireless lapel for the officials that actually has signal routed to the live production on ESPN+. I know what it takes to make it happen and it really isn't that hard.
And it's not too much the commentator's fault sometimes because they've got to do a lot of tap dancing but some of these guys just have no clue how to effectively commentate the game without saying some pretty bone-headed things similar to "you know, at the end of the game the team who's actually scored the most points...they're gonna be the winner". I remember some goofy thing they were saying about the defense that I was thinking to myself, "well, duhhh!" It was something like "The defense has really found that pushing the other team back is really working so they should really try and stick with that as much as possible!". And I'm not too confident that one of those two guys from last night actually knew the world of football from some of the things he was saying.

You're not the only one.
The quality of Troy's ESPN+ productions are many times hard to watch, and very poorly made.
I don't even think they use crowd mics... there is no extra content... the video quality is not good... the camera-work looks like people aren't paying attention... the transitioning isn't seamless... we have no sideline reporter...
It's one of the worst in the Sun Belt, by far. I know students help produce the broadcasts, but come on... there is no good reason Troy can't invest a little extra in ESPN+ production.
Ever watched an App State broadcast? Or a Liberty broadcast? Or James Madison? Or Georgia State? ALL of them look much closer to an ESPN national TV production. Ours looks like a Charles Henderson vs. Pike County game being shown on TV-52.
Troy basketball games on ESPN+ are almost as bad too.

HD cameras with a proper white balance would fix a lot of issues for me. The feed just looks awful without modern equipment. While the commentators are not great, I get it. It's not their main job, it's a side gig for them. One big issue I had that was over the top bad: you could hear the production manager (don't know his official title) loud and clear telling the commentators it's time to cut to commercial break. All in all, this really isn't the fault of the people actually working the event, and has much more to do with not shelling out the money for quality equipment and higher caliber production crews. It would not surprise me if students were part of the crew. If this is the best we can do right now, I would thank the crew for doing the best they can, but we really need to prioritize how we present ourselves on TV, even when it's "only" ESPN+ and invest the money necessary to do so.

Need an investment to make it better.

I think I read that each school provides the equipment etc. I say go all in. Give the responsibility to The Hall School of Journalism. Tell ESPN they can broadcast our game but we call it etc. Having students do the broadcast can't be any worse.

I know for every production except football that it is students in a class. The cameras are HD but I believe a lot of the equipment hasn't been updated since 2012 when Trojan Arena opened so some may be outdated.

That's already what happens. Yikes! So much for that idea. Except for let's say when it's basketball season during Christmas break. They can't make the students come back so they have interns or GAs who aren't journalism majors running cameras.

Watching games on ESPN + is like nails on a chalk board. The worst part for me is 1) the commentators and 2) Not being to hear the atmosphere of the game (crowd noise, band, etc). It’s horrific.

Curious question
If there was no ESPN+ How many more people would come to the games in Troy?

Curious question If there was no ESPN+ How many more people would come to the games in Troy? About 12. I was thinking maybe 100 but 12 is probably about right I don't subscribe to espn+ anymore but it cost like 6 bucks a month You get what you pay for Send ESPN 50 bucks a month and the quality probably goes way up just poking fun so yall calm down - the broadcast is still Crap

I watch all football through ESPN and honestly, painful though it may be to say...only the schools on lower tiers such as Troy have feeds that are sub-par/Busch league and there are plenty of quality productions for $6.99. I used this to describe the helmets from back in the day but it's like small town community theater vs. legit professional productions. I'm not sure who is responsible and I don't wish to disparage whomever it is or the student-led effort if that is who is doing it. If so, comparatively speaking it might be a quality product, as student-produced content goes. But your other 'major" collegiate football programs aren't relying on students and the nobility of letting them run the thing at the sacrifice of a professional production. I do totally get it - it is a resource battle. Troy is producing what Troy has the resources to produce for the most part. I will restate it though - there is plenty of low-hanging fruit that would improve things. If I lived closer to Troy, I would honestly be over the moon to have a hand in helping make things better by donating my time, effort, and knowledge. Crowd mics can be had inexpensively and add the atmosphere to the broadcast that was mentioned earlier. Reliable lapel mics for the refs that also feed into the TV feed and not just in the stadium is honestly easy to do. It's simply not being fed to the A/V truck's mix from what it sounds like. More guidance from a control room producer calling the shots and a bit more quality of a creative eye (probably the most difficult aspect of the lot) from the cameramen to capture the shots that are actually being discussed by the commentators and suddenly things are looking a bit more cohesive and defined and not like grandma shooting home video on the ole super 8 reel to reel. If there were no ESPN, I'd have to catch it at my local sports pub. I go to games when I can but I'm in a particular season in life where that's just not possible. Others are in the same boat. Our loyalty to the team is no less than those who show up early and go home late. It's just life. I don't think that those like me should be looked down upon as 2nd class in the least. Not that anyone is but there is definitely some vibe and innuendo in that direction. Think of the PR product being put out by the athletic department lately. It is slick. It is VERY well done and professional. It is inspiring and visionary. Go from that to tuning into what absolutely does look only marginally better than high school football productions and it's kind of a let down.

I don't look down on people who don't go to games - I live three hours away but own property in Troy and can spend the night there before and after the game if needed.
I am at a stage in life where I can go because one just graduated from Troy and the other is a sophomore.
I said calm down yall - I'm just poking fun.
Go Troy!

Troy is the 2nd smallest home town of an FBS school. The state populace is dominated by Alacrapa and Aublow. Yet, the attendance is pretty dang good for G5. Those that can watch on ESPN + do so for their reasons (distance, age, finances, etc). The actual game experience at the Vet is what my wife and I have enjoyed and have been blessed to be able to do so. But this I am sure of, those that watch on ESPN+ almost to a man wish they could be there at the Vet. I am pretty sure that makes them a fan of Troy as well. So, if their circumstances were different I am convinced we have to expand the stadium. For one day in the not so distant future I too may be watching home games in that fashion.

When I can’t make a game, I watch on ESPN+, put Barry and the gang on the radio, and all is well. I remember when you made the home games if possible and there were no available streams of them if you missed and you might get lucky to watch a stream of an away game. When I became a full fledged TROY fan, I was listening to the call on the radio.
Could it be better? No doubt. But from my vantage point it’s much better than it was in the early 2000s. (Did I really just type early 2000s?)

Us TWF folks with young kids at home and other reasons that our main source of viewing is currently ESPN+ pump just as much money in as the every game attenders. As much money as the AD spends on other frivolous things it seems like the ESPN+ broadcast would not be so subpar.

ESPN+ is a standalone, subscription based platform. Once you pay the $6.99/month, you've got ESPN+ no matter what.
ESPN3 is the platform that requires you to have a cable provider or streaming service.

As an App State fan, I first want to give you some compliments having lived before in Montgomery and attending many of App’s away games at Troy. Your campus is amazing( your facilities are nice, your fans are respectful. That being said the OP is correct your ESPN+ production is unwatchable. Need to at least get some crowd mics in there at a minimum. Every other Sun Belt school’s ESPN+ production is much better and that’s saying something cause they aren’t all that either.
