Sorry... I know Mark Smartt is a great guy, but he made a MAJOR bonehead decision.
We have a pitcher who was just named the SBC Freshman of the Year.. the best starting pitcher on the roster... a pitcher who had 10 strikeouts against Ark State a couple weeks ago... and instead Smartt decides to make a relief pitcher the starter today against one of the best hitting teams in the SBC? Are you kidding me???
Terrible, terrible decision-making. Even Ark State fans are puzzled as to why we wouldn't use our best pitcher. This was essentially an elimination game, and we didn't even put our best pitcher out on the field to win. Now we're basically eliminated. The next game against UTA is meaningless. Win or lose, we're already done.
One of the Ark State players in their postgame said that when they knew Troy wasn't using a starting pitcher against them, they used it as motivation because they didn't like that Troy thought they could just beat them without using our best pitchers.
YOU HAVE TO PLAY YOUR BEST PLAYERS TO GET TO THE WINNERS BRACKET!! When you get to the winner's bracket, that's when you start figuring out how to utilize the pitching you have left!!
Again, Mark Smartt is a great guy... but it's time for a new direction. Just unbelievable.

Probably has something to do with a young arm on four days rest, but you’re right, you know better.

Probably has something to do with a young arm on four days rest, but you’re right, you know better. 5 days rest. And it didn't matter anyway, because we had to rush Orlando Ortiz in who had even less days of rest than Gainous. Troy and Coastal Carolina were the only teams not to use one of their weekend starters so far... difference is Coastal used a veteran relief pitcher. Troy didn't. You can't tell me there weren't more experienced, seasoned arms that could've started. Instead we sent out one of the least experienced relief pitchers who is just a sophomore.

How about ANY weekend starter?
It doesn't matter what Smartt craps out, some people will always call it ice cream.

This has been gnawing at me since I read who we were starting in the tournament opener because to advance to the semifinal Troy had to win today. But on reflection Troy's only hope for the NCAA tournament was to win the SunBelt tournament. Maybe Coach was hoping to escape game 1 and have his weekend starters for Friday Saturday and Sunday to make the push to win it all. We put ourselves in a bad position in this pool play by not holding the #2 seed. Love the Trojan baseball players and hope to see them get back on top of the league again and being regulars in the NCAA tournament!

Arkansas State used their Sunday guy who didn’t pitch the weekend before. But again, you know better! I'm well aware they had their Sunday starter available. I wasn't talking about Ark State's pitching staff though. I think it's a little crazy we couldn't have started a more experienced arm like Max Newton, or Lance Johnson (who has mostly moved into a relief role anyway). Max Newton has even started before and given quality innings. Say whatever you want... bonehead move. There were better options to keep Troy in contention.

I completely understand not using Gainous because of the rest issue, but somebody else should have been the choice to start.

Sorry... The next game against UTA is meaningless. Win or lose, we're already done. Not sure you understand how pool play works. UTA game is not meaningless. Yes, if we lose to UTA (or if ASU wins their next game), the next game after that will be a glorified practice. Arky St is capable of losing two straight.

Well, the way this pool play works it is made meaningless. It's a 3 team pool play, and they decided the tiebreaker if each team is 1-1 is highest seed advances. So UTA just has to go 1-1. They beat Ark St they're in. We had to go 2-0. Weirdest setup for a tourney.

He had been good save for a couple of outings this year, some days pitchers just don’t have it. Oates coughed up three in the ninth and has been near unhittable this year.

Freshman arm, don't get that kind of workload in high school, some coaches would have thrown him out there, Smartt obviously didn't want to risk long term injury.

Like I said earlier.... Max Newton, Lance Johnson, Mason Kenney, DJ Wilkinson... all have more experience or are older guys that were available. Gamble was not the best available. There were better options.
Ark State was seeing his pitches with ease, and that should've been a red flag right there. They were blasting some deep shots. Instead, Smartt tried to squeeze out more innings with Gamble... until Ark State began yacking the ball, one after the other, in just the 2nd inning.

But from a standpoint of trying to win the SBC championship, it is a meaningless game... Troy can't advance. We had to win this game. Even if Troy beats UTA, we're done.

Because Gamble was the 4th starter. He had the 4th most starts on the team. That was his role.

Because Gamble was the 4th starter. He had the 4th most starts on the team. That was his role. And he should've been lifted after the 1st inning. If anyone goes and re-watches that 1st inning, Ark State had absolutely no trouble making contact on Gamble's pitches. Troy was fortunate that only 1 run was scored. And then the 2nd inning happened and it got even worse before Gamble had to be lifted.

Lance has never started a game in his career and is a one inning guy. Max was obviously a back end of the bullpen option as with his use yesterday and all season. Kenney has given up nine hits in his last five innings. Wilkinson hasn’t pitched since FSU. You don’t know who the best available and I don’t either. What I do know, is that staff knows better than anyone the health of their arms and who was best to go in that game. ASU had an advantage of not needing to pitch their guys on Saturday.

It's funny that the same people who defend Smart and want him as coach because he is a Troy guy are the same ones that say a Troy guy is not who we need as a football coach....hmmm. Can't have your cake and eat it to. Some guys are good assistant coaches and some guys are good head coaches. We are not improving, in fact we are regressing in baseball Who is defending anyone because they are a Troy guy? Just presenting facts that you love so much. We finished third overall after being picked to finish fourth in the East, but silly me with these facts.

Play to try to not lose = YOU LOSE!!!! You play to win...PERIOD and stop worrying about tomorrow because if you lose there is no tomorrow. Add baseball to the Troy football motto-----WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR Our goal in both is to play .500 ball. Pretty pathetic Great thought!
