Ganious last outing, he pitched 6 innings vs ULaLa on 5/20, allowing 5 days rest until yesterday. What was obvious about his availability yestersday pray tell?? They didn't use him was the obvious sign of his availability. That's about as boneheaded answer as the original question.

That's four days. It was obvious because they didn't use him. Freshman arm, don't get that kind of workload in high school, some coaches would have thrown him out there, Smartt obviously didn't want to risk long term injury. Thursday thru Tuesday is 5 days on a normal calendar. I still don't get it. You put your best out there to insure the team another day. Period.

Play to try to not lose = YOU LOSE!!!! You play to win...PERIOD and stop worrying about tomorrow because if you lose there is no tomorrow. Add baseball to the Troy football motto-----WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR Our goal in both is to play .500 ball. Pretty pathetic Great thought! Isn’t this the same guy ? Troystet and dgoebel73 Is he answering himself ?

I thought the Gamble Decision was great considering he was very experienced coming into it

I thought the Gamble Decision was great considering he was very experienced coming into it I do not normally question HC decisons, bit this was a Gamble that had long odds to begin with. There were better options on the bench.

Heaven forbid a late-innings pitcher has to actually start a game...
Good grief.
Anyone remember in 2006 when Mike Felix, who was Troy's ace relief pitcher, was instead declared the starter in the SBC Championship game because our other pitching was used up?

It’s called stealing innings. Didn’t work out to well this time but its a decision that a coach has to make sometimes. None of us know the health of all the players and who was really available

Mike Felix had started eight games that year. He wasn’t inexperienced in that role

If a pitcher can only pitch certain innings of a game because they aren't used to being a starter, that's weak sauce.

Sorry... I know Mark Smartt is a great guy, but he made a MAJOR bonehead decision. We have a pitcher who was just named the SBC Freshman of the Year.. the best starting pitcher on the roster... a pitcher who had 10 strikeouts against Ark State a couple weeks ago... and instead Smartt decides to make a relief pitcher the starter today against one of the best hitting teams in the SBC? Are you kidding me??? Terrible, terrible decision-making. Even Ark State fans are puzzled as to why we wouldn't use our best pitcher. This was essentially an elimination game, and we didn't even put our best pitcher out on the field to win. Now we're basically eliminated. The next game against UTA is meaningless. Win or lose, we're already done. One of the Ark State players in their postgame said that when they knew Troy wasn't using a starting pitcher against them, they used it as motivation because they didn't like that Troy thought they could just beat them without using our best pitchers. YOU HAVE TO PLAY YOUR BEST PLAYERS TO GET TO THE WINNERS BRACKET!! When you get to the winner's bracket, that's when you start figuring out how to utilize the pitching you have left!! Again, Mark Smartt is a great guy... but it's time for a new direction. Just unbelievable. What was it you were saying about Gainous? Maybe the coaching staff knew something when they didn't start him the other day. Just gave up 6 runs in the first against UTA

Gave up 3 singles, 3 doubles, walked one and hit another. Team has been very good and very bad throughout the year.

What was it you were saying about Gainous? Maybe the coaching staff knew something when they didn't start him the other day. Just gave up 6 runs in the first against UTA That makes no sense. If that's the case, why would they pitch him today if they thought he would play badly? Besides, my advocation was never that we had to pitch Gainous against Ark State. I wanted to know why a veteran relief pitcher couldn't do the job instead of young, less experienced Gamble.
It's also a different mentality today. Don't you think that makes a difference? If UTA wins this game, they are in the Semifinals and still playing for a title & regional bid. They've got something to play for still, and they look mentally engaged as we speak. If Troy wins this game, they don't get jack crap except a pat on the back and a bus ride back to Troy... and these players have had a few days now to sit in their hotel rooms and simmer in that. So that's probably playing a factor. Why wouldn't it?

POINT OF INFORMATION!
GREAT opportunity available for some of our keyboard coaches, apply NOW before it is posted!! Troy Assistant Coach headed to the San Diego Padres Organization giving someone an opportunity to step in and become the NEXT pitching coach.
Let’s see some people put their resumes and keyboard skills to the challenge! I PERSONALLY am looking forward to what next year brings based on what we experienced and learned this year ...
NOW on to Football season and hopefully all of us getting along with each other 👍🏼

Or that 17-18 is a reason to give a coach an extension and raise.
