Why is everyone excited about Sumrall? I like him because I think he would keep the same culture that CNB has created. Students and recruits would like him. But, from a coaching standpoint, what are we going on to say he is a good coach? Ole Miss defense was bad this year. Troy was good when he was here, but presumably due to VK.
Can Troy afford a CEO type coach that really doesn’t bring actual proven coaching expertise?

Good insight. Interesting questions.
Neal Brown’s resume before HC of Troy was pretty complete. One could see where his obvious next step was HC at a smaller school.

I have similar concerns, would I want him to be our DC if VK left? Yes absolutely! But not sold on him being HC yet at this point in his career.
I might feel better about it if Neal Brown pubically gave him a stamp of approval if he got the HC job.

HC has to be more than just a good coach. #1 he has to have good organizational skills, be able to delegate and basically run a multi million dollar organization #2 assume authority while also delegating responsibilities to assistants #3 understand that you are the face of the program and the buck stops with you. You assume responsibilities for the wins and the losses. You are also the face of recruiting. Ultimately a recruit decides because he feels comfortable with the HC along with the coach recruiting him #4 must be able to get along with administration, donors, boosters, alumni and fans # WIN!!!!

Not being a jerk when I say this. Have any of you had a conversation with Sumrall before? When they first moved here we were fortunate enough to become friends. The guy can sale ice to an Eskimo, he is 100% all about the players, the program and the community. He signed some of the players on our team now that have done great things. He was a DC at San Diego then Tulane. Came to TROY with Neal and was the assistant head coach, LB and ST coach. Hired to Ole Miss to coach LB’s and sure their defense was terrible. Would you play at Ole Miss knowing you were banned from post season play for a few years? If you’ve not watched “the season” that was on sEC Network where they followed Ole Miss. go check it out and see how he relates to players and handles business.
Am I biased? Absolutely but I still believe he is gonna be a great head coach somewhere. Why not here where he knows the program, players and community. There will be some “big name” coaches who apply for this job but I don’t see any advantage of hiring any of them other than the 1 minute of time ESPN will give us on sports center.
At the end of the day. I trust Jeremy and know he will make the right decision for TROY.

Like DT has said. Perception is everything. We need a coach to coach and assistants to call plays. Jon is a coaches coach. Just like Neal. The kind you see on the big screen. Interaction with kids and the media is what they are here to do and Jon is the guy that can do that.

Wasn’t Sumrall CNB first hire and one of four coaches that did a pretty good job recruiting wise that first month here. Also I believe he was Tulane’s assistant head coach when we hired him.

Even if he is our guy, who could run our offense without Neal and his staff? That's my biggest concern.
CNB never showed any interest in grooming someone specific unlike so many other offensive minds normally tend to do: Malzahn, Leach, Petersen, even T.Franklin.

My sources here in North Western South West Northern Cent FL say that AD and Administration will hire a new football coach that everyone will agree with on the hire. Got it from very reliable unreliable sources who's mother's fourth cousin on her step-dad's side knows the baby sitter of the AD's lawn service's sister's brother's cousin on his deceased uncle's side

Steve Spurrier Jr is my vote! He has a big name and is ready for a head job. Good mentor in his dad and wants to get back to the South! If not the head coach, then the new offensive coordinator.

My pick for new DC. Set NCAA single game sack record and can teach our defense visualization for tackling fuel, how to open a can of Whup A$$ and the short yardage power bomb stop compliments of Captain Insano. Plus Troy will be the best hydrated team in the country

He has positioned himself to be at least interviewed for the job. I actually spoke with him yesterday.
