Why wouldn't they be able to fund something that is within their budget? This was not decided yesterday. This issue was addressed when Hartwell was here. Some of us are just late getting to the party.

They don't bring money into the athletic departmemt, but would you disagree that they don't advertise the university in outside performances and band camps? I know more people here in Tampa that have heard of Troy because of the Sound of the South than the football team. Now you have pretty much made my point for me. The SOTS are great for Troy university. Sometimes life isn't fair. The NCAA isn't going to reverse its decision because some people think it isn't fair to this or that group. College football is a money driven industry. Personally when all the stipend talk started I was not in favor of it. Now that it's here I'm not going to sit around and complain about how unfair it is to the other students. Here's a shock many of those students aren't at all concerned with Troy athletics to begin with. Those that are Troy fans, aren't likely to be change their mind over this decision by the NCAA. I'm extremely glad Troy decided to pay the stipend and keep up with the majority of the other G5's. This won't change how G5's and P5's stack up to each other. The P5's will always have the upper hand when it comes to football. It isn't fair that an 18 year old can die for their country, but they can't smoke a cigarette or drink a beer. I will give you credit for this. If you actually do attend most home basketball games, and you live near Tampa, you are a road warrior. How did I make my point to you? My point was SOTS brings advertisement to Troy the same as football/basketball, and spend as much time or more doing band activities. Seems like they should get a cost of attendance stipend as well, no? This whole stipend decision was based about fairness, was it not? So why is it still unfair to other students like band members? At this point, I'm simply saying that it needs to be resolved instead of the masses just dealing with it. I'm not expecting the NCAA to reverse this decision either. That's nearly impossible at this point. I'll still express my disapproval though. Again, I'm very happy that Troy has decided to be competitive in this new phase of college athletics instead of doing nothing. About my game traveling, my job usually takes me up to Montgomery every other week, which lines up perfectly with Troy's rotational SBC basketball schedule. Even some of Troy's road trips line up well with my work travels in different states, so fortunately I've been able to go to some of those as well. As far as football goes, five home games a year is easy to schedule and travel for.

I like a good band just as much as the next guy, but with all the money being spent on stadium sound systems, bands are not a necessity. It's nice from a traditional standpoint, but I wouldn't break out a pitchfork and a torch if the went the way of the dinosaur...

I just think, with technology such as it is, that it's becoming passe in the context of football...not culturally. I've marched for years and also played football. And I have to tell you, one is an occupation and the other is an avocation. No offense.

Band is band, football is football, no use in saying they're the same, because they're not and they will never be treated the same.
Back to the topic, what happens when we have to raise our stipend to stay competitive? Students already have a general fee for athletics, and if the department can't fund it, the money has to come from somewhere else, and that somewhere else has traditionally been students. Donors help, but we all know that we don't have that many big time donors.

Evidently athletes on full rides need money but students graduating buried in debt don't. Let the athletics pay it. Double slap the students if you don't. Not only do you tell them they don't deserve a stipend, you get to pay for the athletes to get a check. Whole thing is a complete and utter joke

As far as the student side of it, I guess the biggest question would be are there enough students willing to vote for an increase in student fees for athletics?

Tuition has went up, housing costs went up and university has made cuts in certain departments. My daughter is a biomedical Science major and she said the cuts have really been felt in her dept. might not be as drastic in The school of education or business though. Alabama in state tuition is high, much higher than Florida but housing costs are drastically cheaper than Florida colleges. I just don't see students voting to pay for athletes to Get a check. And realistically they would be idiots to vote for it. It would be like voters voting for a tax increase to give congress a pay raise

Unfortunately the NCAA has ruled on it and Troy had to make the decision on whether to move forward with it or be left behind. I'm glad they made the decision that they did. Students are students in my opinion. Evens those fraternities you despise.

Interesting enough, if and when the other students start funding these athletes checks with their increased fees and tuition, the pressure to win will become even greater. Think of it, if you are a Troy senior you have never seen a winning season in mens basketball or football. Imagine during that same time you were paying an extra fee to write these guys a check during that same stretch. Wouldn't you want something for the money you contributed ? There are so many better ways to do this. NCAA opened a Pandora's box.

Like I said. The NCAA goofed on this and further puts a burden on schools like Troy. I know they don't have a choice but to do it, since other schools will also. I don't think it's right, I will never agree with it and it's a slap in the face to general students around the country

Why don't you like opinions other than your own Hemi? Why are you so bitter about this stuff? What is comical is those that defend this as athletes bring in money to the university. But it's called a cost of attendance stipend, not profit/revenue sharing. And golf, soccer, cross country, track, softball, volleyball, swimming, wrestling, field hockey, lacrosse etc do not generate revenue for a school. Football and basketball at big schools fund the other sports. Not so at Troy but the big schools. It is the worst decision in the history of the NCAA hands down.

It is what it is at this point, nothing we do will change it.
Even if EVERY Troy season ticket owner was in the lowest TW Teir, would that be enough to fund this when the stipend increases due to cost of living increase? Students would probably not vote for the increase for the above stated reasons, why go into more debt for teams that don't care/win? What rights would the students have if they DID vote for it? How would we let students hold other students accountable?
Also, what if a kid get kicked off the team halfway through season? Would they have to give their stipend back? What happens if they don't?

Common sense is telling me not to wallow in this mud hole but since I was at least one that mentioned the fact that athletes AS A WHOLE bring money into the universities when regular scholar-shipped students usually don't and I supported that with the $500+ million dollars the SEC just received from football, I will offer one thought. Now I get it, we're not the SEC but the decision was made by the NCAA and we could participate or not. The powers decided it was best for us to join given the circumstances and/or the results if we didn't. To be competitive (WIN which I've heard many want and some demand) we had to do what our competition was going to do or we couldn't recruit a kid from anyone's back yard in Podunk USA. Fact is, some like it, some don' t and some, like me, are on the fence. I doubt anyone ever pondered a comparison between scholar-shipped individuals since that was not the issue. I'll bet there is a lurking legal component they are trying to avoid dealing with, like it or not. Staying competitive for athletes that our competition was after was probably a huge factor since the "winning is everything" philosophy doesn't leave much wiggle room in these type decisions. Nevertheless, whatever our opinion is, as they use to say, " Elvis has left the building" on this one. I see both sides but that doesn't matter, ITS A DONE DEAL. Maybe it will stay, maybe it won't but no one here will change it so let's take a deep breath and see how it works out.

I can't answer your questions about the student side of things. As for the season ticket holder question, many season ticket holders are Trojan Warriors due to their TSL. It would be pretty easy for them to bump it up a level and for others that aren't Warriors to start out at the lowest level. While it may not find the stipend fully every little bit will help to grow and support the athletic department. The guy that gives $250 this year might give $1500 in five years. Cultivating and growing donors is the life blood of the athletic department.

I don't know how many TW designate money for a sport specific. I designate mine Football only, it's not that I don't care about the other sports, it's that I played football at Troy and wish to give back to the sport that paid my schooling. If the majority of donors did specify football only, how woukd that work funding this and it's a shame that we are now taking $600,000 a year, sure to go up in the future, and using it to give athletes money to piss away instead of putting it into paying down facility debt, better facilities etc.

There is just simply "more young man or lady" nowadays to give nutritional support to.That extra weight has a caloric responsibility and three squares a day most of the time doesn't cut it.Our student athletes will appreciate the "fourth square" these funds will provide. The $8 extra a day helps to insure this....good call.

For the life of me I have never seen or heard of an under nourished football player that is on scholarship.
If all they need is another meal, provide them with it at the school dining facility. Done.
