Need to play for something that will get the fanbases talking, something bizarre but cool. A Belt is boring.
How about a flaming hammer that stays lit during the entire game ? Or a giant cannon ? Or a '67 Chevy ? Or a live Bald Eagle named 'Merica ! ? Or gold plated AR-15, winner gets to shoot it after the win (blanks of course)

The Bubba Bowl icon_beavisnbutthead If we go this route, I will expect royalties to be paid every time it's mentioned. If the NFL can do that for "The Big Game", I should be able to do it for the "Bubba Bowl". One must use all legal and ethical means to increase income. smiley-laughing001

Definitely a natural rivalry. The main problem is it hasn't went on for decades or years like other rivalries. Even myself (class of 90) this is a foreign rivalry. It will take time but we need to embrace it as a heated rivalry. It will only grow each year Do we have any games that have gone on for decades? Even our "rivalry" with MTSU hadn't been played that long but it was a good one. If that's a criteria I'm not sure we will have a rival because of how much our schedule fluctuates and how much our conference has changed/will change. That is the problem. Rivalries develop over time and become tradition.....Army-Navy, Florida-Georgia, Ohio St-Michigan, Alabama-Auburn etc. We had that with Jax St to a degree. It's hard to say this or that is a rivalry, USA can become a rivalry...if they stay in the conference. But even then you could maybe still schedule them. We need a rivalry, benefits everyone.

This "rivalry" will only help south. A city 10x larger than Troy, with a city gov't happy to throw more money at them. We're pulling up a program younger than ours by 100 years. They don't need our help.
SOUTH WOULD NOT DO THE SAME FOR US IF THE SITUATION WERE REVERSED!
ps: Go ahead, call it the Bubba Bowl and promote the redneck stereotype. Folks outside the south don't take that as tounge-in-cheek. They will laugh *at*, but not *with*.

I know they have already decided to call to call it Battle for the Belt... but what does everyone think about Battle for the Yellow Hammer? And there will be a gold/yellow hammer up for grabs... I'm thinking of something like Thor's hammer??? May sound stupid... but I figured I'd throw it out there.

Why the battle of the Belt??? I am being honest we are in the SunBelt conference and to call any one game the Battle of the Belt will seem conceded to other teams and if we are not the two top teams we will be laughed at and perhaps deservedly so...it just sounds pretentious to me.........................Now while I was being or trying to be funny The Bubba sorry the Bubb ba bowl it really would not matter if others laughed if the play was good a little self deprecating humor goes a long way as to how others feel about you....The trophy could be a worn pair of toe less boots...........but this I am sure if we call it The battle of the belt....in a conference called the Belt for short we will be made fu of if not held in contempt by others in the conference

In my opinion, they missed the mark. I'm not even sure they hit the target. Battle for the Belt....sounds a little cheesy. Agree. Very weak. Little originality. For what it's worth, I was approached about the name in July. Asked for input in this thread www.troyfans.com/thread/2066/looking-name-south-alabama-rivalry Didn't get a lot of feedback, so it is what it is.

Since The Dream is the only one of you bozos that knows anything about wearing a title belt, I will give my two cents (which is actually worth $9.33)
For all you getting you Fruit of the Looms in a wad about South being a rival, do us all a favor and can it. Whether you like it or not, South is the closest thing we have to a rival. They will be on the schedule every season for the foreseeable future in every sport.
They have a football win over us, which gives them a claim of being on the same level as us. Yes, I know we have been fielding a team for more than 100 years, but once a win happens, the younger program gains legitimatacy.
Jax State isn't coming back on our schedule any time soon, so please stop yearning for the DII days.
South Alabama is Troy's top rival across every sport. If you don't think so, just ask a coach or player.
As for the belt trophy, one of my old nemesis said "To be the man, you have to beat the man." Whoever holds that belt, is the man in the southern part of this state.

Why don't you take your nasty, slimy, polka dot tights and cram them back in your lousy side show of a wrestler mouth? I think people are just so fascinated with giving a crappy name to a football game that they're not thinking about all the help this is giving a program that 1) doesn't care, 2) doesn't need it, and 3) ultimately hurts Troy. The title of this thread is "Troy vs. South rivalry?" See, it's even got a question mark. I'm against it, and I voiced my opinion here. I haven't seen anything about "only post your PRO rivalry opinions here." so stop trying to police the thread, you fat, lame wrestler.

When I was a kid (back when the helmets were leather and had no face masks) Troy State played a game each year in Dothan. If I remember correctly, the opponent was frequently Livingston (UWA) and the game was dubbed the Peanut Bowl. This was in the late '60's and some of you may be better historians than me. I guess this is a long winded way to say, I like the idea of naming the game the Peanut Bowl with the winner being awarded the Golden Peanut.
