UMass calls Sun Belt about potential membership
"Could the Sun Belt look to the Northeast for its 12th member?
Massachusetts called the Sun Belt and both sides have had a "very preliminary" discussion about joining forces, commissioner Karl Benson told CBSSports.com.
UMass became available as a football-only member after it became clear in March that the Minutemen would not fulfill all-sports-member status required of the Mid-American Conference, its old home. UMass will part ways with the MAC in 2015.
The Sun Belt has been looking to fill its final spot by June 1 and has had discussions with several FCS-level schools, including Liberty..."

UMass to the Sun Belt? Could happen
"Sun Belt commissioner Karl Benson told CBS Sports that his conference and the University of Massachusetts have had discussions about the Minutemen joining as a football-only member. It’s a pretty good bet that if it’s at the point where Benson is willing to admit the talks publicly, there’s a legitimate chance of this happening. Benson is no stranger to conference shifting. He’s the former commissioner of the Western Athletic Conference, which has had more turnover than a community college. The Sun Belt office offered no further comment and UMass athletic director John McCutcheon didn’t answer his phone or return calls Wednesday. UMass needs a conference. There’s no hope as an independent. From the moment the MAC elected to sever ties, the Minutemen could hope for a great offer, but the reality is they are going to have to grab the best scenario available. UMass has some nebulous potential, but right now, the Minutemen are a school that’s 2-22 as an FBS program. That’s not a record that’s going to cause league commissioners to line up. Getting competitive in any conference is the first step toward other things. The Sun Belt isn’t all that different from the MAC. Will most fans care more about a game with Eastern Michigan than a game against Troy? It’s a conference outside the big five, fighting for attention, money, bowl bids etc..." Ranburne's Chase Whitley called up to 'The Show,' scheduled to make big-league debut with New York Yankees Thursday
"RANBURNE, Alabama -- East Alabama isn't known for its love of yankees, but that could change pretty soon. In Cleburne County's Ranburne, population 406, news spread quickly Tuesday afternoon that one of the town's own was getting called up to the big leagues. Chase Whitley, a 2007 graduate of Ranburne High and a Troy alum, will likely make his first major league start at Citi Field for the New York Yankees against their cross-town rivals, the New York Mets." Yankees’ Chase Whitley to make MLB debut Thursday
"As first reported by Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish, the Yankees are planning to promote 24-year-old right-handed pitcher Chase Whitley from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday afternoon to start the club’s series finale against the Mets. Whitley was a 15th-round pick of the Yankees in 2010. He began his professional career as a closer but has since transitioned into a starter and boasts a 2.39 ERA, 1.025 WHIP, and 32/7 K/BB ratio in 26 1/3 innings this season at the Triple-A level. Whitley is starting in place of CC Sabathia, who landed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with inflammation and fluid buildup in his right knee. Whitely could get a couple turns if he pitches well Thursday. It will be his major league debut..." I think both Hemi and troystet have valid points. However, I don't think a bowl cares if we get blown out or play someone competitively. It's all about viewership. So the mighty SEC would get the nod in most cases. However, with Troy's fickle fan base, I can see attendance being affected by blow outs during the season. In my opinion, if we go to a bowl... It will be in Montgomery.

Steve McLendon primed for bigger role?
"...Then Heyward added this: “I think our nose tackles have to be ready to play in sub package this year.” If that is the case then Steve McLendon is primed for a bigger role in 2014, not a reduced one. And he could become a three-down player, staying in the game with Heyward when the Steelers replace a lineman with an extra defensive back..."
