TROY – Troy’s second scrimmage of fall camp Saturday gave Trojan fans and coaches something they have been accustomed to for years – big offensive plays and plenty of scores.
And in the process, it may have given the Trojans the answer to its most burning question of the preseason – who will be Troy’s starting quarterback?
Brandon Silvers led three of the Trojans’ four scoring drives, and the offense rebounded from a five-turnover performance in the previous scrimmage to have a clean effort at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
“Obviously it looked to me like the offense came out and played a little bit today,” Trojans head coach Larry Blakeney said. “Running and throwing (it) - made some big plays.”
Silvers said last week’s poor performance motivated the offensive unit to play with some intensity yesterday.
“Last week, we didn’t play too well, and this week we wanted to step it up a little bit,” he said.
That effort showed from the beginning. After misfiring on his first pass, Silvers connected with K.D. Edenfield for a 13-yard gain.
That was all Silvers needed to start the ball rolling for the offense. A key pass to Chandler Worthy gained plenty of yardage, and running backs Brandon Burks and Jordan Chunn played consistently on the long drive.
Burks capped the possession with a 1-yard touchdown run.
“We want to get the big play and score as fast as we can, but the 13-play and 11-play drives are OK, too, as long as we score,” Silvers said.
