I have kept my thoughts to myself and my close friends regarding how the portal and NIL have changed the game I love ...
Around midnight UNLV Starting QB Matt Sluka announced (a post on Twitter / X) he will redshirt and not play the rest of the season.
THE REASON, he stated that he committed to UNLV for certain promises made to him, but they have not been upheld since he enrolled.

Not so much anymore, but how can we expect kids to understand commitment when we as adults struggle with it, and it is seemed now as common place.

I would not jump to conclusions here. We don't know any real details. That said, some speculation... If UNLV honored their commitments to him, and he is looking for a bigger payday, it would be a very selfish and despicable move on his part to quit and take a redshirt. It's possible he did not hold up his end of the deal, and that is being left out. If UNLV did NOT honor what was written OR verbally guaranteed to him, then he is making the right move. People, at all levels have, have to be held accountable, especially now that it's a JOB involving guaranteed money. The argument that he is quitting on his team does not hold water IF he is not in the wrong per agreements with the school. If I took a job, and did what was asked of me, and three months later they tell me they can only pay half of what was agreed upon, I'm gone. Leaving my coworkers out to dry would not even cross my mind.

The only way for us G5 schools to play in this is to treat players the same way we do coaches. Contracts and buyouts.

The only way for us G5 schools to play in this is to treat players the same way we do coaches. Contracts and buyouts. Agree, but here's the problem with that. You must allow the athlete to hire an agent while in HS (That opens another can of worms) to negotiate on his behalf. That agent would then negotiate with multiple schools (not just the one who "drafted" him like in the NFL). The negotiations would by necessity in include length of contract and terms (just say, 2 year, full tuition and $50K/yr NIL, to be renegotiated at the end of 2 years). Now think of all the variables in this equation - let's say 5 schools, 2 years vs 4, full tuition vs 3/4, amount of NIL money, buyout amount and terms (one amount for going to FCS school, > buyout for going to P5 school, even > for going to another school in conference), all of that to be accomplished before the beginning of Spring Practice. The number of lawyers alone a school would have to hire to negotiate those deals for 25 players per scholarship period would bankrupt most athletic departments. IMO, the solution is unachievable because it would involve the reversal of a Supreme Court decision. Go back to offering players a full ride scholarship, guaranteed for the length of that player's eligibility. That would be in excess of $40K year for even a school like TROY. At $24K/year for tuition, then add housing and meal plans, it will easily breach that amount, and you have a VERY NICE income for an 18 year old. Forget the argument that the school makes money off the athletes NIL. If one was to go to work for, let's just say Lockheed, that person would bring a skill set to the table and Lockheed would say here's a 4 year contract worth X $/year. Lockheed would then capitalize on the talents and skill set being brought to the table and it would be expected, by anyone who supports a capitalistic economy, that Lockeed would profit from those talents and skills. At the end of the 4 years, the 2 parties would renegotiate and continue, or dissolve the business, relationship. In the case of the athlete, If he brings the appropriate skill set, talents, work ethic to the table and he works hard for 4 years to develop them, at the end of that 4 years, he gets his money, jus like the guy working at the missile plant.

Leaving my coworkers out to dry would not even cross my mind. Heck UNLV said they were staying in MWC and then the next day UTAH STATE said they were joining the Pac 2 to 12 or whatever is happening out there. So, said NO we may not stay and now we are talking to the PAC 2, 6, 7 trying to get to 8---12. So, the fact that this is happening at UNLV is not surprising and with all the points given in this thread. There are lawsuits by PAC 2 however many they have and the MWC. Trying to kill each other and no loyalty is exactly what we were talking about with HCJS first and second year here. The dam was going to break. Now UNLV is just one of the best examples how it is from head to tail screwed up due to what Legion points out. Then that leads to what 05 pointing out. Some will win and some will lose. The lawyers are always going to make money. But you are right in this....................YUCK!

A lot of it is his generation. Gen Z is the worst generation in history. They are self-centered, pampered, don't know how to earn anything, and think they are entitled to everything

A few things to unpack here that are facts. Nobody ever imagined the 4 game redshirt rule would be used this way. This guy is the 2nd player this week to state they would "opt" out the rest of the season to preserve a redshirt as they hit the portal in December. NCAA failed all institutions with lack of planning here.
NIL contracts HAVE to be in writing (digital these days but the same thing). Many "he said" vs "he said" in this high profile situation. We've talked with the UNLV collective guy, sharp guy and I firmly believe everything they promised from the collective was documented and handled correctly. The gray area is what was told to this player from others who he trusted but those people did not have authority to promise these things. One major sticking point is the $100K promised by an assistant coach.
If you don't document it... it never happened!

It's as true in the world of athletic NIL as it is in the medical industry.

However, it seems with all the lawsuits and the way things are could be summed up in this "New Age Wedding vow"
" I will have and to hold you until death do us part....unless someone else hotter comes by."

Jonesy, with the news out of Georgia where schools can pay directly, do you think that there could be multiple contracts between player, school, NIL, and other? Plus, WHEN contracts are broken, lawsuits may happen which could hurt recruiting because a team could be labeled as litigious.

And on and on and on.

There ya go. Another bail at UNLV, just an average RB (current fourth leading rusher and former transfer) at best. Will be interesting to see who his agent is and, if anyone is interested in picking him up. ]br] I think this is who Cornhole was referring too, just like the QB that I mentioned at the start of the thread, I am sure more information will CONTINUE to come out regarding both of them! RB’s latest post on Twitter / X: “My decision has no ties to NIL agreements. This is due to on-field opportunities. I did not receive a dime from any UNLV collective.” Michael Allen I would be curious… other than these two athletes (notice I did NOT include my traditional “student-athlete) and their agents, does anyone else expect either of these guys to come out of the portal ⁉️

These two guys made me think about "best by," "sell by," and "use by" dates on food products that indicate different things BUT none of them are actually safety related. You can still use beyond the date, but most of us don’t!!
WHY do these guys make me think about these labels⁉️ Because maybe now we need a label in college athletics … SPOILED BY (parents, agent, school, portal, NIL, etc) … because spoiled brat came to mind reading about both of them. 😂
I will forever be “Old School”, use your high school recruiting period to determine the best fit your 17 - 18 year old mind can determine, commit to that school for 4 (some need 5) years, and be thankful for the scholarship (and room & board if included). IF you end up being disappointed, welcome to adulthood and your first lesson in life.
