www.si.com/college/tulane/news/posts/tulane-football-coach-says-nil-commitment-helped-lure-him-back-matt9SPORTS ILLUSTRATED - The Name, Image and Likeness space in college athletics is one of the most competitive spaces in all of sports. Having a collective isn’t enough anymore. That collective has to be successful financially and pro-active in its support of student-athletes and programs. Tulane football coach Jon Sumrall, who is entering his first season leading the program, told the ‘Wake Up With Mintzy’ podcast recently that if the Green Wave didn’t have its Fear the Wave collective, he might have thought twice about taking the job. “When I went through the interview process here, had that not been in place the way it was, I don't know that I would have been as interested in this opportunity,” Sumrall said. Recently, Sports Illustrated spoke with Michael Arata, a former Tulane football player and one of the founders of the Fear The Wave Collective. Along with raising money for student-athletes, the collective has worked to create relationships with student-athletes, something they feel is critical for a Group of 5 school like Tulane to retain some of its student-athletes at critical moments. The collective helped the Green Wave retain quarterback Michael Pratt after his stellar 2022 season during which Tulane won the Cotton Bowl. Arata and another former Tulane player, Jimmy Ordeneaux, were outside the locker room after the American Athletic Conference championship game loss to SMU last December. Then-coach Willie Fritz had informed the team he was taking the job in Houston. Arata and Ordeneaux leaned on their own experience to talk with players afterward that might transfer. Both had coaches leave the program while they were playing. “We understand what that feels like,” Arata said. “We used our own experience to say, you know what? It would be nice for us to be there, to be somebody who says, ‘Hey man, I know who you are. I know what you're going through, I'm here with you right now, and I can promise you I'm not leaving.’” Sumrall was an assistant at Tulane a decade ago before the NIL era. In his short time back on campus, he said he’s appreciated the collective’s ability to help support his players in that space. “The Fear the Wave collective, those guys have positioned us to be at the top of the G-5 level without question,” Sumrall said. “Without an organized collective, without a really good NIL initiative, you've got no chance in college football now.” The Fear The Wave collective, Sumrall said, is at least giving Green Wave football a chance.

Yeah. In an interview with Group of Five Guys he said something similar but also pointed to the fact that Tulane was in a big market with top-tier academics and that's a huge recruiting pitch to run with as well as the NIL.
It's a bummer to hear but it's the truth. Wish I could donate money to NIL to help but I just can't at the moment. I'm sure others are similar. It's why we have to keep finding diamonds in the rough and doing more with less.

Just to clarify, Tulane had pledges of over $2 million in collective funds. They graduate a lot of physicians down there. Does Troy have $2 million...maybe, maybe not. I can assure you Jon thought very highly of the Collective we have. You can all contribute here though, www.trojanstogethercollective.com

"Top Tier Academics" is NOT an easy sell when Athletes can get $ame or more at schools with ezpz curriculums etc. Vandy, Duke, Ga Tech, and Stanford are all Top Tier Academically and eke by on the gridIron.
Dude can say all he wants publicly but 3X the Salary speaks volumes.

Let’s take a pseudo-Poll A) You make 200,000 dollars a year and turn down 600,000 doing same thing to keep making 200,000 B) You make 200K as above and take the 600K job C) You make the 200 K and you take a pay cut to 150,000 because you think you did not work as hard as you could. D) You make the 200 K and decide to divorce and she gets half so you quit your job. E) You make the 200K and you take the 600K job and you get divorced and she gets half of it so you quit your job so she loses more money!

You do the gig for 3 years, regardless of W/L record, get fired, wife and you retire to #30A, Coach a Mighty Mite team and kids have a leg up on life. Not bad. No Brainer. And that's what he decided. all that other is image talk. How do I know?? That's what I'd do!!

You can all contribute here though, www.trojanstogethercollective.comMaybe Troy can start graduating some nurse practitioners and sports CEO's who love Troy who can give to the collective. While I never want to throw cold water on optimistic posts, I'm afraid that's what I'm about to do. In the medical world there are two divisions - one that is "controlled and directed" by physicians and one that is "controlled and directed" by nurses. Physicians use advanced practitioners that are designated and licensed as Physician's Assistants. They also use advanced practitioners that are designated and licensed as nurse Practitioners. In actual practice, there is little difference in the two groups. The major difference is that physician assistants (PAs) have the support of physicians and the political clout they bring, while nurse practitioners (CRNPs) have the support and lesser political clout of nurses. As a result, at least in AL, PAs can receive 3rd party reimbursement (money directly from insurance companies and Medicare) and at a higher rate thanCRNPs, which makes them more valuable, financially, to health care organizations. CRNPs may bill 3rd parties, but they do so under the sponsoring physician, who gets the money. That means that PAs typically make close to, if not more than, twice what CRNPs make to start a career. TROY graduates a sizable number of CRNPs, but we DO NOT have a PA program. Those are usually tied to schools with med schools, so 🚫, 'Bama, stAte, Tulane etc, turn out PAs. There is no pot of gold at the end of the CRNP rainbow. There is one exception to all I wrote above, and that is the practice of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA). These practitioners have the undying support of physicians and in SE Alabama, the STARTING annual salary for CRNAs is $150 K+. Those advanced practitioners, many of them who got their initial nursing degree from TROY, can make a big impact and should be a focus of our fund raising efforts. None of this is meant to denigrate CRNPs, they are essential in today's health care environment and they, because of their focus on the totality of the patient, often, under the guidance of a physician, are able to provide more complete routine health care than the physician with whom they work, feeing the physician to deal with more complex and acute issues. The fact that TROY graduates advanced practice nurses is a great thing we should all be proud of, but the financial reality is, they won't be the financial savior of TROY Athletics...or any other schools' athletics for that matter.

Compared to the P5 schools and some upper G5 schools, Troy is poor. We will be ok, we are in the right lane, accept it. Some of y’all get so attached to these coaches, going so far as to think they’re your buddies. You been asked by Sumrall to visit his new pad in New Orleans yet ? Nope, you never will. You’re a grease spot on the road to improving his career. Some of y’all I see are already cozing up to Parker like you got a shot. It’s humorous. I hope we win, a lot, and in my minds eye, Parker would be “doing his job”, because guess what, he gone too to the next pretty thing that throws him some more money. And if he turns out to be the Bald Menace then it’s easy to say “Get your losing azz out, Next up!”

You have heard the almost cliche of “people maybe in your life a season or longer”. The fact that Neal still had some contact with some in Troy may not be that odd but it is true that “on and up” maybe more the common case. So, Neal’s 8 years around over about 12-13 years probably has a lot to do with it. I mean how many of even want to hear from “he who shall not be named?” I kind of wish someone would reach out to him to see how he is doing? Coooouuuggggh gaaaagggggg. If you do let us know how he is doing….ahhhhhhh oooouuuuchcch
