Sometimes field position battles determine the outcome of football games, and winning those battles is where special teams can play a major factor. Heading into the 2014 season, the Troy Trojans must fill some critical roles on their special teams while bettering themselves in the kick return game. Last year, the Trojans shined on punt returns, averaging 12.42 yards per effort – good for 18th in the nation. Bryan Holmes, who averaged 20.6 yards per return last year, returns to fill those duties again. The kickoff return units, though, did not mimic the punt return success, netting just 15.07 yards per return last year. Troy special teams coach Shayne Wasden expects that number to increase in 2014. “It’s always a work in progress. We feel like we have more depth, some guys over there who understand what we need to get done,” Wasden said. “We’ve been pretty good on our punt returns, so there’s no reason we can’t be good on our kick returns.” What may aid in that effort is the return of a healthy Chandler Worthy to returning kicks and the addition of Teddy Ruben to the team. Worthy averaged 22.0 yards per kick return in 2012, but he only returned seven kicks last season after he suffered a lingering quadriceps injury. Ruben was the first-team National Junior College Athletic Association All-American at kick return last year. ( Full Article) ht_trojan
