Don't know much about Wetumpka football but they have Bear Woods and Jonathan Chandler on staff so this could help our recruiting there. I am also really pleased that we are getting players from Tennessee as it was the one border state we weren't recruiting. Really looking forward to T-Day coming up

He coaches over on the space coast and played on our first D1 team. He said he finally saw a Troy coach this year and we did sign a player from Vero. Anytime we expand our base it can only help. Tennessee was untapped and there are plenty of good players up there especially the way the state is growing. Really impressed with HCJS recruiting

Also beat out USM and signed a couple of Mississippi High School kids, that very rarely happens.Troy historically works the Juco ranks yearly in Mississippi but almost never signs high school players there.Doing work!

It is an expectation of excellence in every area of his “business” and his business is football. He does not have to suck up Or play too much politics. Do your job well and with excellence and expect nothing to be handed to you. Do all that with an amount of humility knowing where all strength, health and excellence comes from in the first place. Do that and you will do well if in nothing else but a contentment that I have done the best with talent that God has given me. Everything else will take care of itself. No one promises you to be born on third base or that the going will be easy and will not consist of hard work. Those that do are not often successful for very long. All praise goes to Him that controls everything. Then a really big thank u to coach Sumrall and staff for showing what character means. Business can be tough and some choices as a leader are not always popular. Do it with excellence and honesty and the fans at Troy or anywhere could never ask for more. Select talent and character in combination and you get a better outcome. The two are not mutually exclusive Or inclusive. Do your due diligence and you get what we have. Enjoy it while it is here. Thank you to all that are making Troy a place of obvious excellence, talent and character.

Well said, Buzz. We are very blessed to have the current leadership in place with Troy Athletics (and not just football) and you are correct, we better enjoy it while we can!
Go TROY!

Jon is really special. And I think we could have him for longer than one more year. The lessons of XHCNB and Billy Napier loom large. Stringing together a few successful SBC seasons and then jumping at the first shiny thing doesn't always work out.

His family is happy here in Troy and he will likely wait for his opportunity in Kentucky. Just IMO. So glad that you and others have acceptd Jon as Special. 12-2 helps! His first stint in Troy revealed the talent that he possessed!

Not sure how much more hero worship I could heap upon him through many different forms of media. I was behind Brent Jones and the then AD in security at the MGM airport a week before the CL announcement and loudly encouraged him to go after Jon then. So any attempt to lump me in with others who may have been apprehensive about him can be stopped immediately.

I do think there are more supporters now then there was at that time and not sure who was who and it’s all in the past. Certainly do not want to cast anyone at all in the light of supporting WHO was chosen those few years ago to coach Troy. Really would like to know who was in that camp because THAT was not wise, smart or even logical. Just glad sanity returned to Troy and Jon is here. Hero worship. Naw just appreciation for a good job.

Stringing together a few successful SBC seasons and then jumping at the first shiny thing doesn't always work out. Coaches like Jon Sumrall, Neal Brown and Napier are motivated, aspirational, very competitive and confident. They take on ( in JS case will take on) these bigger jobs because they truly believe they can win and want to compete at the highest level. They are ultra competitive. #2 they take the bigger jobs because they come out of it (even when fired) with generational wealth. Making $5/6 million a year ( and that’s low now) with a $12 million buyout literally sets up you and your grandkids for life. I believe Jon will pick his spot but we all know he wants Kentucky in the end and it would be easier to get that job if he was winning at a NC State, VA Tech, Arkansas or even a Tulane. Plus his family can always make new friends. Coaches wife’s and kids always can and do. (This addresses an item from another post)

(This addresses an item from another post) I wouldn't exactly say it would be easier for Sumrall to get the head coaching job at Kentucky by being at a P5 or Tulane. He's already beloved by many, many Kentucky fans, and Mark Stoops will have a say in who his successor is whenever he decides to leave... and Mark Stoops was a big fan of Sumrall.
Sumrall doesn't have to prove himself at another P5. He can easily transition from Troy to Kentucky, especially if he has maintained success at Troy. Fans and players would make that transition very easy for him. Just look at all the examples of SBC coaches who have transitioned straight to big jobs:
Gus Malzahn went from Arkansas State to Auburn Hugh Freeze went from Arkansas State to Ole Miss Billy Napier went from Louisiana to Florida Eli Drinkwitz went from App State to Missouri Scott Satterfield went from App State to Louisville Neal Brown went from Troy to West Virginia

Some very fair points. (Over half of your examples didn’t or won’t work out IMO) But, again coaches want to compete at the highest level. JS might never get a chance to coach at Kentucky. Ultimately, he won’t roll the dice and make a “Russian Roulette decision” of Kentucky or nothing. Sometimes things don’t work out, the Kentucky AD might have their own choice, Stoops might coach for another 15 years, they might hire internally, etc. etc. (Look at Troy’s recent coaching disaster as exhibit A. JS understands this, all coaches do, it’s why nearly all coaches have numerous stops on their resume. So if, for example a Virgina Tech or Arkansas offers him $6 million a year, he will most likely take it. Those are places you can win consistently. With the 12 team playoff coming, a playoff bid is not out of the realm of possibility. Why make less than $1 million when you can make $6 million? (While you wait for Kentucky) And in the worst case, you get fired, walk away with $15 million.
