I hope there's no hard feelings when she wasn't given the HC job.
She's a Trojan through and through.

I hope Coach Smartt can get some head coaching experience relatively soon and be in a position to return to Troy when the timing is right. Her many contributions to Troy as a student athlete and coach should be much appreciated and valued.

I haven't asked her but when Newell was hired one of the questions I asked him was about assistants and without saying he would be moving away from the current staff flat out, that was certainly the impression I got. My opinion doesn't mean much but I'm of the opinion that she was a stellar coach and not retaining her is a mistake. Granted it's Newell's program and he has his own plans and he's a championship coach, while I'm a sports writer.

Her many contributions to Troy as a student athlete and coach should be much appreciated and valued. IMHO these young assistants need exposure to other programs, personnel and different ways of coaching/managing. For instance, take Former HCNB and HCJS. They are the dynamic managers they are due to their exposure to many other HC's and programs along their journey. Our new Softball Pitching Coach says “Coach Newell’s success has been admirable, I’ve watched from afar as his teams have been winners year in and year out, and I’m thrilled to be able to learn what makes his teams so talented.” Coach Smartt will take notes, learn new procedures, methods and ways of accomplishing the W. She will grow, and as you suggest, may return to her Alma Mater the better for it.

"given the job" - no head coach should be given a head coaching job I think this is a great opportunity for her to grow and maybe the door is opened for her to interview and get vsck to Troy she is a good one based on comments from players and other coaches
