Phil Steele has several variables that he plugs into formula sets when making his magazine every year. Here are a few. Some of them are eye opening.
Starts Lost To Injury: Teams that had 32 or starts (not starters, mind you) lost to injury usually improved or had the same record as the year before.
• Troy ranked 22nd in starts lost (where 125 is the best, and 1st is the worst), 30 of those came on defense! (7 on offense). Only California lost more starts due to injury on defense last season. We have got to stay healthy. Steele's stats call for 6-6 or better here. Not sure how he compiles stats like that. Seems difficult to obtain accurate
information on starts lost to injury.
Turnovers Equal Turnaround: Teams with double digit turnover margins usually improved on their record or had the same record the following year.
• Troy was at -7, but still ranked last in the SBC vs conference, and 104th overall. To me, this is still on the garbage end of the rankings, and I expect this area to improve.
Close Games:
Teams with 3 or more close losses usually avenged their losses with a better or same record as the year before. Teams with three or more close wins had a worse or same record as the year before.
• Troy had 7 close games. Four close wins, and three close losses. We have a net of 1 close win.
Simply put, we stay healthy on defense and create turnovers, the close games will take care of themselves. The offense has the potential to be as good or better than last year and special teams add Teddy Ruben and may not have been hit as hard due to graduation as in years past. There is potential on this team.
