I know Scott Cross might not like it... but it seems like the best way to win in the Sun Belt is to go hard in the transfer portal. It's unlikely there will be a season where Troy or any other SBC team doesn't lose at least one of their star players to the portal. And sometimes when that happens, other guys on the teams decide to exit too.
It's going to be hard to stay consistent with the continuous turnover, year-in and year-out.
Louisiana, Georgia State, and South Alabama have been the best teams in the SBC over the past few seasons because they dip into the transfer portal and grab 3-star, 4-star, and 5-star players. It makes them good enough to immediately compete for a championship. Georgia State lost a few pretty good players to the portal... and their new coach has already reloaded with a 4-star player from Xavier, a 3-star player from Vanderbilt, and a 3-star player from College of Charleston.

HCSC dipped into the portal LY to bring Efe to the table, nothing novel there for Scott.
Just a guess but surely HCSC and staff are scrambling to cover the loss of 9 (or more) players from last season. Chanda Rigby and staff have already announced the signing of JuCos, Transfers and High School Srs.

HCSC dipped into the portal LY to bring Efe to the table, nothing novel there for Scott. But that's part of my point. Even most of the high school recruits Cross has signed have wound up leaving. Duke Miles and Christian Turner are the only high schoolers Cross has signed that have stayed for at least two seasons. So I'd rather him sign a talented, experienced transfer who who leaves after one season... than a high school player who probably won't be a superstar that also leaves after one season.

It is getting to the point where coaches will have to decide on HS recruiting or using the portal. You can do a combo but you risk A) player sets bench, pouts and enters portal year 1 B) player is a stud and makes a huge impact year one. Decides he is to good for such program and enters portal C) players makes good impact, team doesn't win and enters portal to go somewhere he is appreciated D) Player comes in, doesn't play, doesn't transfer and takes up space E) which is the rarest, HS player or transfer comes in with 3-4 years left, makes big impact, leader and stays with program for duration

Is it going to be a huge rebuilding job? Yes, but lets take a look at what is leaving the team.
20-12 2021-22 record
9 of the 20 wins were: Carver, Rust Collge, Jax St, UT-Martin, FAU, TN Tech, AL A&M, Ark Baptist and Mercer
6 of the 12 loses were in conference and loss #12 was getting crushed by Abeliene Christian in the post season. We also lost to North Dakota and SE Lousiana. So it not exactly like we are losing some magical team. Cross is in the same position as most college coaches right now. He will get the right players in

Most of us (no matter our career) would not want to have 75% of our personnel turnover per year. The career of menβs college BB coaching right now is Tough! Heck even Bill Self has to replace most of his team.
