The Troy Trojans pressured the quarterback a lot better in 2013 than in 2012 as the team recorded 11 more sacks and 18 more quarterback hurries. Most of that increase came from a veteran defensive line that stayed healthy most of the season. But most of those veterans are gone, leaving some holes to fill, especially in the interior. Shermane TeArt and Antonio Gillespie have graduated and so have backups Aaron Williams and John Clark. Playing in a league full of spread offenses causes many coaches to rotate linemen frequently. Troy is no exception, and “Defensive Linemen University” looks ready to promote a few guys with some experience into starting (and maybe starring) roles. The biggest contributor inside appears to be former Arkansas Razorback Lonnie Gosha. Gosha had 27 tackles (4.5 for loss) and 1.5 sacks last year, pretty stout for a backup. Head coach Larry Blakeney said Gosha “has tremendous upside” in a post-spring interview with me this year. Beside him will likely be Billy Dobbs, who moves from defensive end after adding some bulk. Dobbs looked good in spring, but Troy’s offensive line had some key pieces missing due to injuries, so it may be hard to judge how well the move will work. ( Full Article) iconTroy3

Alright...Bolt is on his 2nd class. This should be a much improved defense going into the '14 season. I like him mixing in some zone looks. Several safeties made it to the league, starting with Brannon Condren...looking for an overall increase in performance by the whole unit.

For the first time in a while we actually have a decent number of guys on defense with game experience. Gosha and Roberts on the right should be a force. The left is Jamal Stadom, Deon Lee, and possibly Anthony Williams. They practice against Terrence Jones everyday. This unit could be as good or better than last season. Or maybe I'm just drinking the kool-aid. The linebackers two deep comes back which is a huge bonus. TJ Fuller at the NIC has more upside than Jeremy Spikner had, IMO. The front seven, on paper, has a chance to be pretty good. My concern lies in the other four spots.

Like Coach Poe said, there's talent there...just have to work on the fundamentals and playing the ball in the air. Mixing in some zone will keep them out of the m2m coverage until they can learn how to play it better.
