TROY, Ala. – Sun Belt Conference women’s golf champion Troy will head to Tallahassee, Fla., and the SouthWood Golf Club for the NCAA East Regional May 8-10. The Trojans learned their fate in front of a capacity crowd during a viewing party Monday evening.
Troy will be one of 24 teams to compete in the NCAA East Regional and one of 72 teams in the NCAA Championship field. The top eight teams from each of the three regional sites will play for the NCAA title at the Tulsa Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.
Led by Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year Bart Barnes, Troy earned the Sun Belt’s automatic berth in the NCAA Championship with a six-shot victory over Texas State at the Sun Belt Championship back on April 14-16.
Ftima Fernndez Cano was named the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year after a remarkable rookie campaign. The native of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, won the individual crown at the Sun Belt Championship and finished in the top 10 in five of Troy’s nine tournaments this season.
Troy’s lineup, which is comprised of three juniors and two freshmen, is strong from top to bottom. Brooke Spinks finished in a tie for third at the Sun Belt Championship and has turned in an impressive spring season with a stroke average of 76.73 and three top-12 finishes.
Taylor McGraw also had a solid spring as she carded a 76.33 average over her 15 rounds and tied for ninth at the Sun Belt Championship. Becca Horner will carry a 77.09 average into the NCAA East Regional after an eighth-place finish at the Sun Belt Championship, while Langley Vannoy turned in the best fall season by a Trojan with a 75.10 stroke average.
