OXFORD, Miss. – The rough day the Troy Trojans had defensively was not just limited to the 51 points they gave up.
The Rebels set a team record for yardage with 751 and in the process, broke the Trojans record for most yards surrendered in a game on the FBS level.
The previous Rebels’ best was 623, set against Auburn in 1951. The 751 surrendered were 33 yards better than the previous record for Troy, besting a 718-yard performance from Tennessee in last year’s shootout loss.
Ole Miss gained more than 600 yards for the first time since 2003 when they faced Louisiana-Monroe. They also ran 90 or more plays for the first time since the 2012 Vanderbilt game.
“We gave up a lot of yards. We gave up a lot of points today,” Trojans safety Chris Pickett said. “It was a bad showing, but this game doesn’t land on one person, on one side of the ball. When the offense is doing well, it helps the defense. When the defense is going well, it helps both sides.”
The Trojans entered the week 36th in the nation against the rush, but they surrendered 382 yards to Ole Miss on 61 carries.
Burks finds the end zone: Despite leading the team in rushing attempts and yards this year, Troy running back Brandon Burks only had one touchdown entering the Ole Miss game.
That changed when the Daleville High product notched Troy’s first touchdown on a 5-yard run.
“It felt good (to score). When coach called the play, I knew it was going to happen, so I had a big smile on my face,” he said.
Burks often has run the ball in between the 20s before freshman Jordan Chunn, a bigger back, handles the load inside the red zone. Burks also has a few fumbles in the red zone and appreciated the vote of confidence from the coaching staff to handle the carries there.
“I have plenty of problems. I just got to work at it … but it felt good for them to trust me,” he said. (Full Article).
