Third downs are crucial times for offenses and defenses.
A conversion keeps a drive alive and an offense moving toward points, while a stop usually ends the possession in a punt or a field goal.
So with a final score of 51-21, one can capture a glimpse of how good the Ole Miss Rebels were in getting key conversions against the Troy Trojans.
The SEC squad converted a whopping 11 of 17 attempts, with four sustaining early drives, as the Rebels handed the Trojans its second straight whipping from a SEC opponent this season.
Several of those key third-down conversions were for several yards as the Rebels tallied a school record 751 yards. Four of Ole Miss’ five first quarter conversions were of eight yards or more.
“Sometimes it’s unbelievable how inept we are on third down or playing the ball in the air. It started early and stayed late as far as their receivers making plays,” Trojans head coach Larry Blakeney said.
The game was tied early after Troy responded to a Rebels score on their opening drive. Brandon Burks rushed for just his second touchdown of the season to help tie the game at 7-7.
But the Trojan defense did not get the key stops when it needed to. The Rebels converted all five of their third-down situations in the first quarter. (Full Article) iconTroy3

Last year we ranked 28th in the country in 3rd down defense. 35.7%. This year we rank 107 at 44.9%. In this case the numbers don't lie. The odd thing is we have almost doubled our sack total and we have 14 more TFL right now that we did at the end of the season lat year.

Our D line has been strong in most of our games this year, but the secondary needs help. We can't continue to give up big plays on 3rd down. sFi_lance
