Wonder how much longer Hawkins plans to stick around?
My guess he retires within 2-3 years

I thought this was a good quote for everyone to remember:“ At Troy University, we have to get more for every dollar that we spend than probably most other programs, so good stewardship --the ability to do more with less -- is the cornerstone of who we are.”
THAT is why many of the people on this site give in different ways. YOUR money MAKES a difference with this program!

The longer this fan base continues to buy into the "do more with less" mantra, the longer it's going to take to get out of the Ls column. When JH came and loosened up those purse strings and invested in the non-revenue sports, they responded. I have no issues with being frugal, but that's not as prudent with athletics as it is with window shopping.

I have no issue whatsoever with the business of Troy operating with a do more with less mentality within the department. However, I'm not a fan of him pounding that point publicly. I feel it sends a message to donors and potential donors that we don't know need your money, we can do more with less.

The public image is we want Troy to grow and we need all fans and alumni on board. Realistcally we have to do more with less. We are the smallest school, in the smallest town, with the smallest Alumni base in the perceived weakest FBS conference. But to hammer that in public serves no purpose.

Agreed...it's one thing to operate within your means and maximize your ROI, but entirely different when your CEO is shouting it from the mountaintops...

Quite frankly, the more I learn about this University and it's administration, the cheesier it sounds. And, the man at the top said that.
Agree with Hemi guy, some things best left unspoken.

I don't have a problem with it. The reality is we are in the 2nd smallest town in the Nation with an FBS football team. There is nothing wrong with promoting the small community with big time athletics and making it clear we don't have the resources of bigger schools. It's just who we are. Let's embrace it and shock the world. We aren't fooling anybody by not talking about it. If Dr. Hawkins is anything, he's a brilliant marketer. He knows exactly what he's doing.

What team is in a town smaller than Troy? I'm puzzled. I know Boone and Statesboro are both bigger.

Technically but the school is almost three times bigger, the makeup of the population is different, median income is higher and they are the Auburn of South Carolina. Could we get to their level?? Doubtful but getting to a Boise State or East Carolina Level is Definetely attainable. Winning is a must, Boise got to their level by winning and aggresive recruiting. Onward and upward Troy facebookthumbup

Actually, Clemson is technically bigger because of the school. The only town smaller is West Point, NY where Army is located, I believe.

Population doesn't matter as much as what you draw. Even if Clemson, SC was smaller in population than Troy, AL, why do they need this: www.clemsontigers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?&DB_OEM_ID=28500&ATCLID=205504990 "TROY can go as far as the people of TROY want to go..." It's not about the size of the city, it's about the size of the support...That is why you have new packages aimed towards new and recent grads. They have finally decided to build support from the ground up...we'll get there one day; I believe that, but "poor-mouthing" is an excuse in the event we don't.

Went to Troy vs. Clemson and that was an incredible atmosphere. Troy should follow that path for sure. What we all have to do though is make Troy University better via Endowments so we can get better students who earn more and who hopefully will contribute more.
But you are correct, Troy can go as far as Troy people, alumni and fans want to!
