Despite two huge deficits, the Troy Trojans were just one play away from surging past the Sun Belt leading Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns with two minutes left Thursday.
So facing fourth-and-goal from the 4, the Trojans dialed up a play involving one of the most prolific pitch-and-catch combinations in Sun Belt history.
Except the Ragin Cajuns were ready for it.
Two ULL defenders blanketed Shreveport product Eric Thomas on a fade throw from Corey Robinson, and one of them batted the pass away to seal a 41-36 win over Troy at Cajun Field Thursday night.
“ We talked about it on the sideline, and they double-covered him. We thought it was in our best interest to go to our best football player,” Robinson said. “He’s made that catch numerous times.”
In fact, a similar fade route put the (5-5 overall, 4-2 conference) Trojans within striking distance of the Ragin’ Cajuns (7-2, 4-0). Thomas caught a 3-yard touchdown pass from Robinson with 6:59 left in the game, and Will Scott’s extra point cut the Trojan deficit to 41-36.
The score capped a huge comeback for the Trojans, who had fallen behind fairly early in the game (Full Article).
