With a 53-yard field goal in the first quarter of a 41-36 loss to UL-Lafayette on Thursday night, Troy kicker Will Scott set the Trojans’ record for longest field goal – a record he already owned.
Scott’s previous best kick, a 52-yarder, came last year against Florida Atlantic and erased the previous best of 50 yards shared by Ted Clem and Michael Taylor.
“It was early in the game, and we needed points on the board. Coach saw me making them from there before the game, so he decided to put me in there,” Scott said.
A strong wind appeared to be at Scott’s back during the kick but was blowing left to right, which he said helped.
Scott, who finished the game with three makes in four tries, said he enjoyed the record for awhile.
“It felt good at the time, but I would much rather have the win,” he said.
