The University of Alabama-Birmingham Faculty Senate voted Thursday no confidence in president Ray Watts after his decision to kill the university's football program. The measure is largely symbolic since University of Alabama System trustees control Watts' future and have stood behind him. But it's a sign of the significant divide over Watts' leadership and follows no-confidence resolutions against him by the graduate and undergraduate student government associations. UAB football enjoyed its best season in a decade during 2014. Watts cited financial costs associated with the program as the reason to shut it down, but many UAB supporters believe trustees associated with the University of Alabama campus in Tuscaloosa played a major role. The University of Alabama System oversees UAB. The faculty's resolution expressed concerns over Watts' 22-month tenure that he has failed to apply shared governance regarding disbanding athletic programs (bowling and rifle were also cut), changes in faculty benefits, his selection of administrative officers, and changes in academic operations. “I'm obviously disappointed, but what this vote means to me is that I have more work to do to find common ground so we can move forward, and I am up to this challenge,” Watts said in a statement. “I truly want to thank our students, faculty, staff, alumni and supporters who have made their voices heard in a constructive way.” www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/writer/jon-solomon/24963718/uab-faculty-vote-no-confidence-in-president-after-football-dropped

In addition, Conference USA presidents meet later this month and will hear a presentation from UAB on why it believes it should remain a C-USA member. Very few people believe UAB will be permitted to stay given that C-USA's bylaws require football for membership.

So, should C-USA drop UAB, as most are predicting, should the Sunbelt go after UAB as a non-football playing member? Maybe with hopes that the football program will be resurrected? Thoughts?

UAsB will never join the sun belt... They're too good to sink to our level or so they think.

No doubt that the Sun Belt would be the best fit for UAB from a geographic and monetary standpoint.

It would add to the basketball and baseball/softball strength. With the addition of Georgia Southern in baseball and football adding UAB ups the basketball, baseball and softball. With ULL and USA already softball powers, adding UAB really ups the SunBelt in that sport.

IMO: Any addition to the SBC needs to bring a football program. After all, that's where the $$$ comes from.

I think they would be a good addition to the SB in terms of other sports, but I just don't see them wanting to come to our conference and we really should prefer additions that include football....

Yes. I, for one, prefer an all or none membership or at least as it relates to football, basketball , track, tenis, golf and baseball/softball. If someone like UALR won't play football they dont need to be D1!

If someone like UALR won't play football they dont need to be D1! I'm not sure I agree with this. St. Johns doesn't play football, do you remove them (schools like that) from D1 competition? Does Gonzaga play football? Now, for Sunbelt Membership, I might agree on football playing, but across the board, can't go there. There are 2 to 3 times as many D1 basketball schools as there are D1 football 351-129 IAW Wkipedia.
