He rose to quick fame last year by leading the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks past Arkansas in a stunning upset and was named the Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year.
He was also supposed to have been through with his collegiate career, the victim of a torn quadriceps muscle against Tulane in late September. Last week, seemingly suddenly, quarterback Kolton Browning received medical clearance to play and fired four touchdown passes in the Warhawks’ 38-10 win over Georgia State.
Now as the Troy Trojans prepare to play host to ULM Thursday night at 6:30, they face a much different Warhawks team than the one that managed just 17 offensive points in two games while Browning rehabbed from the injury.
“This cat coming in here on Thursday night is gonna put a lot of pressure on (the defense), I promise you,” Trojans head coach Larry Blakeney said. “His name is Kolton Browning, and we’ve got to play good on defense. We’re gonna give some stuff up on defense — just got to try to limit them and get stops and get the offense the ball.”
“Kolton is a great player,” Trojans defensive coordinator Wayne Bolt added. “(Brayle) Brown has played the last two games, and he’s done a good job for them, but Kolton is the guy who has been there, done that and has run their offense for years.”
