Troy men’s basketball overcomes injuries, inexperience throughout non-conference slateBy Sean Holohan Those were Troy men’s head basketball head coach Phil Cunningham’s two major concerns for his team coming into 2014. For a team returning just three players from the year prior, predictions were hard to make for the Trojans. Only adding to the uncertainty for Cunningham was injuries. And plenty of them. “Our junior college guard (Jeremy Hollimon) in all likelihood is out for the year. He had knee surgery,” Cunningham said in a press conference before the season. “The one (injury) that has really been disruptive to our team at this point is Oskar Reinfelds. He is one of our experienced guards. He has one year of Division 1 experience. We only have seven years of Division 1 experience on our team.” ... ... ...

This is a crucial conference season for Coach Cunningham. It appears we have gotten better from last season, but the rest of the conference has as well. Since John Hartwell has shown that he wants results now, I wonder how long he allows Coach Cunningham to stay if growth does not continue.

As bad as the men's program was the past few year's I believe there will be some latitude given. Especially with how young and inexperienced we are.

The only miracle worker I know of died on a cross years ago! We were awful and it will take time. He got a great HS recruit this year but he needs a couple more to get a solid foundation go build on. The great thing about basketball is that it only takes 2-3 good recruits to turn things around.

Maestri with the JUCO only concept left the program in shambles and put it in a perpetual rebuilding year every year because every year we lost half the team. We finally got some HS recruits which Maestri never even attempted to get. Getting guys in the system for four years will pay off down the road.

The program was essentially dead when he took it over.
