In most defenses, linebackers are usually the leading tacklers given they play against the run and sometimes against the pass should receivers come across the middle.
At the top of the Troy Trojans’ leaderboard are a pair of safeties – Cam Hudson and Chris Pickett -- and they are not necessarily giving linebackers Mark Wilson and Wayland Coleman-Dancer a free pass about it.
“They’re all coming at us,” Pickett said. “Antonio Gillespie, Mark, Wayland, they all came up to me and Cam after game, ‘We’re coming for y’all. We’re tired of seeing y’all make tackles.’ It’s all in fun when those boys make those kinds of comments, but we’re all competitive guys.
“We’re competing with each other and we’re competing with the offense at all times.”
Both Pickett and Hudson had huge games against Western Kentucky, but Wilson gained one tackle on Hudson by finishing with 10. Pickett had 14 total tackles in the game.
Hudson, of course, made the critical fourth down stop to seal the 32-26 win and also had a fumble recovery. Pickett wasn’t sure who had the bigger game, though.
“Cam had some great plays. If you watch film and look at some of the plays Cam made down the stretch and at the end of the game, he had some great plays,” Pickett said. “Fourteen tackles (for me), that’s a great number.” (Full Article)
