Charles Henderson's Chase Smartt, Geneva's Scott Stough ink baseball scholarships with Troy UniversityAs big a day as it was for Chase Smartt, who signed a baseball scholarship with Troy University on Wednesday morning, it was just as special for Mark Smartt, Chase’s dad and the man who will be the Trojans’ head coach when Chase joins the program next fall. Chase Smartt, one of the state’s top prospects, said the opportunity to play for his dad made his college choice an easy one. “ I love my dad to death. When I first moved here in 2002, I was like 5 or 6 or 7. I stepped onto Troy’s field, I was like, this is my home,” Smartt said after a signing ceremony at Charles Henderson High School. “ I never wanted to leave Troy and leave my dad, because he’s going to make me better. He’s the best father and he’s going to be with me every day. That’s the good thing about going to Troy.” A very proud father, Mark Smartt said, “I’m going to get to see him play all the time. Selfishly, that’s what I’m most excited about.” The day got even better for the current Troy assistant to coach Bobby Pierce, who earlier this fall announced his retirement after this upcoming season. Geneva pitcher Scott Stough, a 6-foot-3 left-hander, signed with the Trojans. “ Coach Smartt made me feel at home when I went there and it is so close to home,” Stough said. “I am really excited about going there.” Stough is also eager to work with Chase Smartt. The players are friends. Full Article: www.dothaneagle.com/sports/troy/charles-henderson-s-chase-smartt-geneva-s-scott-stough-ink/article_b7734660-6abf-11e4-b51f-63ad47d6199b.html
