If coach Gas isn't our guy, or our DC, who would you want?
My first call might be to Vic Koenning, but that isn't all rosy. He's getting older and might not have as much fire in the tank. Maybe he just wants to retire. Round three at Troy might not be how he wants to round out his career. Who knows.
It might be time to call up Al Pogue to be our DC. One of the most respected coaches to come through Troy. Would be a slam dunk in my opinion.
Jacksonville State's current DC, Zack Alley, would be a good pick. JSU lead CUSA at 20ppg on defense. We have a lot more talent at Troy. Brandon Hall came from JSU, and he's well liked around here.
Who else?

Coach Polk should be considered. Continuity and a decent resume suggests he should be in the running.

I got the sense VK was done with Troy once he wasn’t seriously considered as Neal’s replacement.

If not Greg Gasparato, then Taylor Polk.
If not Taylor Polk, then I don't know.

I have no idea if he is ready, but I would love to see him at Troy in some capacity.

I forgot about Bear Woods. He would probably bring some good energy as a DC. I mentioned in another thread I wonder if Pogue would be interested in returning for a 3rd time to be DC as well.

Anything is possible but I think he really likes it in Wetumpka

IMO there are discipline issues with the Wetumpka program right now. To me that is reflective in the coaches. I personally don't think Bear is ready for such a large jump.

I would take him. Watching him speak in several instances makes me believe he has the spark that a coach needs to reach the players. And there isn't a coach alive today who at one time wasn't on their "first" assignment. Neal Brown and that last coach we had...they both started their college coaching careers somewhere. Woods is not a completely unknown element. BUT...first we've gotta get a head coach so that HE can choose who he wants. This is kind of cart-before-horse, mental masterbation.

As a LB coach absolutely. As a DC...no

That's what UAB did, brought in a bunch of high school coaches. Looks at how that's working for them.
Anyone remember Todd Dodge at UNT?
Bear Woods as a LB coach, sure. Bear Woods as a DC, probably not a great idea.

To be fair all I said was he would probably bring in good energy and not that he is my top choice by any means.

As a LB coach absolutely. As a DC...no For what it is worth, this was kind of my point. I don't expect him to start his college career as a DC, but he seems to have energy and drive to fill a role - maybe LBs or maybe special teams, or DL. He has been a leader at every level.
