I was headed to the hunting land to spend the weekend with my sons and a couple of my grandkids when the news about ex HCJS became official. Because I was in the woods and was spending time with my family, I was unable to respond immediately to the news. I think that was a good thing as it gave me some time to ponder the events and reflect on what it means and kept me from losing my mind and saying something I might have regretted on Saturday morning. One of the things I pondered involved the financial details of all that went down.
Ex HCJS, in his new position, will earn $ 19.5M more than TROY offered him in the counter ($4.5M x 6 years vs $1.5M X 5 years). Upon reflection, I realize, that though God has richly blessed me, if I were to liquidate ALL of my assets and give them to TROY Athletics for use by the football program, that sum would not make a significant impact in the salary difference for one (1) year of the contract and would not even move the needle as it relates to the total contract. As a result, my impact on TROY athletics is limited to essentially whatever impact one loud, screaming fan can have on a game day in establishing home field advantage. All of the opinions, all of the thoughts, and all of the suggestions I make here or anywhere else TROY athletics is being discussed have little to no impact on the success of the programs. As they say "Money talks" and if I gave all of mine, it wouldn't speak loudly enough to even be recognized as a raised hand in the middle of the chatter.
I'll continue to support TROY, I'll continue to donate, continue to buy tickets, and continue to be a physical presence at events, but I am more aware today than ever, that my best efforts to make a financial impact will not even ripple the waters. College sports are big business, relying on big money and that fact means I will forever remain a spectator, not a player.
I'll see you all in B'ham. GO TROJANS.
