Though it's fun to follow the uniform reveals each week, I realize they have nothing to do with the way a game is played or its outcome, but bear with me for a moment. On November 14, 1970, a Southern Airways charter crashed while approaching the airport near Huntington, W VA. Killed in the crash were 75 members of the Marshall football family - players, coaches, boosters, etc. I remember, as a 9 year old who loved football as much as anything a 9 year old could love anything outside of family, hearing about this team I'd never heard of dying in this crash. It was one of those moments that occur in the life of a child that they never forget. Today, Marshal wears a uniform in remembrance of that even. They will take the filed wearing all black...helmets, jerseys, and pants. Recorded in the helmet stripe will be the names of all of the 75 people who lost their lives that day. The helmet will have on the nose pads a vintage UM logo that the school used in 1970. The helmet decal will be the buffalo decal worn by that team while the neck pad will read "Young Thundering Herd", the name given to the team, composed almost entirely of freshmen, that took the field the following year. This will be, in my opinion, a uniform classic, and one that should go in their HOF, or whatever they call their historic place of honor. When we play the Herd, I want to crush them on the field. When their game impacts the TROJANS of TROY, I want them to win or lose, whatever benefits us. Today, however, for just a little while, I think I can say with a clear conscience, WE ARE....MARSHALL! BTW, as a side note, especially to the younger ones among us, If you have never seen the movie "We Are Marshall" you owe it to yourself to watch it, not just for its entertainment value (IMO it's one of the best sports movies ever), but to understand the history of one of our conference mates. x.com/HerdFB/status/1723108599293943938?s=20

I posted this on the SBC board in a thread about The Sons of Marshall. csnbbs.com/thread-980787.htmlI wasn't born when it happened. I learned about the tragedy in 1993 when Troy and Marshall played for the first time. My dad was talking about the upcoming game and he said, its an honor to play Marshall. I asked why and after he told me the story, he said: "Anybody that can pick themselves up and be successful after something like that is honorable. Honorable to those who died and those who will come after." I was very happy when Marshall joined the SBC. On November 14, I will say "We are Marshall." BTW, my middle name is Marshall
