So I was reading several of their posters complain that Troys band was loud and how we are all mic’s up. While the jag band played low enough that they didn’t drown out the crowd. They are proud of this too!😂😂😂

Hang on to your hats because this will highly likely be an unpopular opinion but when I went to the Troy/USM game Saturday, I actually thought the band was considerably less loud than it has historically been. That aside, it has seemed that the SOTS has trended over the years away from its traditional identity and TBH into something that to me seems just like any other average and forgettable marching band. Now I don't in the least mean to disparage the band's members who work their butts off because I know how much they put into it. However, I have to be honest because at one time the SOTS was such a key part of my life and I can't just give platitudes that are phony when I really feel like someone should tell their leadership (really it is probably Troy University's high level leadership and not the band's), even if it won't change a thing and is horribly unpopular to say, that the direction the band has taken (or has been forced to take) is just....not good. Otherwise, all that everyone will do is blow smoke about how great it is, and it'll be like the Emperor's clothes - he'll just be walking around naked because nobody has the balls to speak up. Now I know that there are a lot more limitations on their time and what they do now because of various factors out of their control but I'm sitting here and honestly can't even remember what the tunes were for half-time. And had I blinked, I might have even missed it...as it seemed to be over just as quickly as it began. I know it was homecoming and there were some stuff taking up time for that but my sentiment isn't only about that one day.
It used to be an equally primary thing that I attended games (pre and post game) for. Now, it seems as if it's the University's afterthought - not their pride as it once was. I'm sorry if this ruffles the feathers of anyone. I don't mean for it to and I do honestly hate to say these things but...I'd be lying if I said anything else.
While I'm on it, I'm also personally pretty bored with some so-and-so getting trotted out there on the field to get a plaque every 5 minutes and during half-time. More band, less giving plaques to people I know nothing about and don't care about that I'm going to clap for rotely for 10 seconds while my attention is really on other things. Maybe I'm more like Frank Barone from Everybody Loves Raymond than I want to admit but...I really don't give a crap about recognizing all those folks and it seems like there's more and more and more of that at every game.
So get off my lawn....LOL

Recognition is a good thing, whether you or I know the folks or not. Most of those folks have supported Troy University and Troy Athletics for decades and at levels that you and I would swoon at. Your Alma Mater could not function successfully without these folks and/or their corporate support.

I may be incorrect but they were more active at South than when at home. As far as I could tell. So, they were good at South.

Like football, sometimes you have a losing season in band. We are having several of those and now we suck at band. We used to be tops in all of collegiate bands, but now they suck. Sometimes, they even play recordings instead of actually playing. Band directors are like football coaches and should be replaced. Our current director is on the level of whatever made Fester’s head itch.

Before ya'll go popping off about ish you don't know about, let me enlighten you of a few things about the band world.
1. It needs money, and a lot of it. Instruments, uniforms and day to day functioning of the band is NOT cheap. 2. Because instruments are expensive, less people are going into band because parents won't pay for instruments. 3. As a director you have to figure out a mix of music that is entertaining, fun to play and is educational. (It's like band actually has to teach something, damn) 4. Do I agree with everything that SOTS is doing? No, I don't. I'm not an apologist, I'm a realist that knows the struggles that the program faces. (It's like I'm a band director or something...) 5. People need to realize that there's a lot that goes into programming and the legalities of it. Just to get rights to arrange a song can be 10-20k, depending on the song. The fines can be just as high if not higher.
Now, everyone can come in and say I'm an apologist/fanboy/whatever the hell you want to. I'm a proud SOTS alum that gives back as much as I can and helps as much as possible. People have bashed the band since before I was there and will continue to do so because we apparently have nothing is ever good enough, reasons and culture be damned.

Hey I still like the band. The little dude who was the drum major last year was worth the price of admission by himself. Hated to see him leave.

I'd like to add on to some of the points I'm seeing on this thread. I know when I did SOTS we learned a halftime show in the late summer at a band camp that nearly took up the entire 20 minutes allotted in games but that was mostly so we could use it during marching band festivals. We did a lax halftime show for homecoming... because homecoming then we were learning a new show for the last half of the season. Most of the songs we were constantly moving to except for one song that was the drumline/dance line feature. We don't seem to do that anymore. Why is that?
To another point, yes band is expensive but I think restoring the Fanfare, restoring the drum cadence and improving the drill would cost nothing. I have yet to hear any rational argument from anyone with the SOTS as to why changes were made and why we can't change them back.
Also I agree it's not the students' fault. What I'm worried about is we're about to raise a generation who do not know about the rich tradition being left by the wayside.

People seem to think they must leave “their mark” or a “legacy” when given a position of leadership. That often leads to a product that is inferior when compared to earlier(see Rob Manfred and MLB for a perfect example). Often times one’s greatest duty is to protect and steward well what they were given. That’s often harder than “making a mark”, so doing so means that one has done the best that they could. That’s what’s needed with the SOS.

People seem to think they must leave âtheir markâ or a âlegacyâ when given a position of leadership. Oh look another band thread where people complain about things they have no clue about so I put in my once every sixth month posts...
By what metrics are you judging the quality of the band? Skill of playing? Marching complexity or precision? Drill design? Show choice?
What "traditions" are no longer there that you want to bring back? If nine notes are what you are referring to, then you are behind the times. Dr. Long was on board with that change for some time before his passing. That was a change that needed to happen on our terms and time rather than on a national spotlight for the wrong reasons. If you're going way back and want "the horse" back, you're wasting your time complaining to the band because that was never the band, it was the rodeo team. It went away mainly because of the change to artificial grass. Also there's no rodeo team anymore.
As for Dr. Walker, understand that band is a class which the primary purpose is for the betterment of the students that participate and it is not a group that exists solely for competition. Dr. Walker's job is to teach students, not bend to the whims of the rose-tinted memories of message board posters.
As for choice of songs, legality is a big part of it. About ten years ago they got a nice little letter that gave them the choice of dropping half of their stand tunes or pay $500,000 to a company called Tresona. Why that firm goes after some groups but not others makes little sense.
Why is the band not growing much past 350 when JSU and others in state are consistently 400+? That's easy. JSU still ponies up the money to send the band to travel. Also they actually have assistant band directors and support staff. Blakeney, Brown, Summrall or any other coach would not have anywhere near their success without coordinators and position coaches.
Just like with the football team, if you really want to see the band grow and improve you've got pony up and support with donations.
