June Jones caused all kinds of sputtering when he suggested, on a Tampa radio show, that schools like SMU should play their football in the spring. Specifically, the Mustangs coach said that the Mountain West, Mid-American, AAC, Sun Belt and Conference USA should move their schedules to the spring to increase visibility and avoid burial by the Power Five leagues in the fall. Maybe there should be less sputtering about this issue and more thinking. Would ESPN rather have real live games in the spring than the Penn State spring game? One would hope so. There are enough insatiable football fans to provide a a viable audience for, say, a Connecticut-Houston game on Saturday afternoon and a Boise State-San Diego State game Saturday night. Maybe the payoff, and the TV contracts, would mean that Sun Belt and C-USA teams wouldn’t have to play “body-bag” games at the Ohio States and Alabamas, coming away with nothing but the check. Spring games would mean that players like Northern Illinois’ Jordan Lynch and Louisiana Tech’s Colby Cameron would get deserved recognition, instead of playing invisibly on ESPN12 or whatever. And freshmen who enroll in January to participate in spring practice can now enroll in January to actually play regular-season games. Troy, UAB and South Alabama would probably stand to gain bigger followings if they played in the spring rather than competing with Alabama and Auburn for attention in the fall. ( Full Article)

No need for Troy football to compete with Troy baseball for fans.
June Jones has been drinking too much.
I think I'll have a beer.

One of the pleasures of a football Saturday is awakening to a chill, knowing that the afternoon's tilt will be held in crisp, fall air. I, for one, do not wish to have football compete with all the spring chores which must be done. While I enjoy a good spring scrimmage or T Day game, I have no interest in having the season played in the spring. After all, footBALL rhymes with FALL, not spring. I think the Hawaiian sun cooked June's brain.
