Thanks again for doing great work. I have sat with Coach Rhoades twice in my life. The first was at a basketball game just after Troy won the National Championship. I was about 12 and I remember there weren't a lot of people at the game, so somehow my father and I sat right next to him. My dad talked to him about the season and coach was willing to take the time. A man came up to coach and it appeared coach knew him. The man asked coach if he was leaving, and coach said.. Don't believe everything you read. He was gone sometime after that. I don't blame coach for saying that as it is common practice for coaches to keep plans quiet. I have done the same and my jobs are not high profile.
The second time I sat with Coach Rhoades was when he returned to Troy when the 1987 team was being honored. I think this may of been Legend Larry Blakeney's final season or close to it. Again, by luck I ended up sitting with coach, his son, and some of the other coaches from the 1987 team. As the game was going on, either I or my friend said to the other... What would you call here? Well coach got in on the conversation and as I remember it, we went on a scoring drive and coach correctly predicted each play as we marched the field. I talked to coach and I thanked him for talking to my Dad back in 1987. Coach was really cool and he made one of my best Troy memories. Towards the end of the game, my friend asked Coach if he would come back and take over for XHCLLB. Coach smiled and laughed and said he was honored but he couldn't top leaving as a national champion.
So... I really like Coach Rhoades.

You do a great job with these. I was 9 so I dont remember much of the season. My first Troy game was the National championship game. I remember how short the QB was when he took the snap

This was a great read. I really enjoyed it, and look forward to the rest. Also, I just really was jealous of the hats Rhoades wore in the photos.

Thank you so much and you have no idea how much I would love to have some of that 80s TSU stuff. You should follow me on Twitter if you have it (@benonsports). I post a lot of old stuff whenever I find it, along with random things about Troy in general.

I get to kind of go through the season as it happened in my research.

Wow ... thank you for this. I remember those two meetings ... when Chan said he was going and then this meeting. Turk and I have talked about it ... At both of them, we're thinking, if they bring in someone that goes away from Flexbone ... there goes my playing career. (aren't too many offenses where a 5'7" QB fits ... or a 5'10" 215lb Tackle! lol) I've often said ... I believe Coach Rhoades had the best FB mind I've ever been around. Think about it ... he coordinates a dominant defense in 1984 ... the real core of the 84 championship ... then directs the offense to the 87 championship. (and in 86 we had a very productive offense too). Thank you so much for this. Really look forward to reading all the rest!!
