At some point there will have to be an NIL Collective for Troy Athletics. Don't know who will do it and where it will come from but it will exist. At that point, we the fans, donors, boosters, advertisers, etc. will have to make a decision on where our funds go. I've done a lot of research regarding these collectives and they all seem to have their ducks in a row. The good news is, it seems there are only a handful of G5 schools who have them, so we are not that far behind. In the near future of college athletics there will be a shift from facilities, lockers with TV's, playstation lounges, barber shops, smoothie bars, to cash in hand. No more showing off what we have... here's how much money you can make.
The collectives who choose to go the route of a non-profit allow you the donor to make a donation that benefits you from a tax standpoint while allowing a pool of cash for the players. The question is, can we contribute to both sides... the collective and the athletic department? If you want to have winning programs, that answer has to be yes. We don't have people that throw around hundreds of thousands of dollars like a lot of programs, but we have people who can give something. Y'all go ahead and start budgeting so that we can get all of our programs on the right track. Tell your kids, they will get a card showing a donation in their name vs. an actual toy for Christmas.

Plenty of Troy alumni with financial backing can help with that. I wonder if our BIG alumni (DeMarcus Ware, Osi Umenyiora, Lawrence Tynes, Mario Addison, Steve Mclendon, etc.) would join something like that?

I’m predicting you will still need top facilities as well as cash payments. I don’t know how I feel about it all so far.

Facilities are must-have basics (Auburn, Florida, FSU, etc are currently building brand new $100m facilities - and TAMU and Oregon have major upgrade plans - they are planning to build entire Athletic campuses (not just facilities)) - NIL is just another incentive because players want both nice facilities + NIL deals. NIL could be a game changer for some programs (USC, Oregon, Miami, TAMU, Texas) while other programs such as Bama and UGA won’t be able to compete with Nike$, oil-money, etc. This is the reason why Saban is so concerned now. Most mid-majors will eventually become farm-teams, however. They will struggle to keep their best players because P5 programs will just poach them by offering NIL deals. However, some mid majors might be able to use NIL collectives as a defensive mechanism offering NIL + playing time. Even programs like Auburn and LSU had to use NIL as a defensive instrument to keep their star players happy, Tank Bigsby (approached by UGA) and Boutte (approached by Bama)… Olympic sports (incl Basketball) could massively benefit from NIL btw. Many top athletes now choose NCAA over professional careers and G league, etc. Auburn’s Suni Lee is rumored to have $4m in NIL deals and a major Gatorade NIL deal in the works. It’s all based on individual star power + # of social media followers (Crimson Tide Athletics has 1m IG followers while the Olympic gold medalist has 1.6m IG + 1.7m TikTok followers, globally). Arch Manning could make $10m with NIL next year. This is a bit different from NIL collectives because superstars can get their own NIL deals - while collectives are strategic tools indirectly utilized by athletic programs. It’s a crazy new world.

Basically the future of college football. School that offers best $$ gets best players. G5 will get the players that don't get P5 recruited and if they can play you get 1-2 seasons max before they jump for the $$$. Absolutely ruined the game and I don't give a crap how much money player X brings in to school Y. It has always been that way. Player X if good enough gets drafted for big $$$ and if not if he does what he is supposed to do (be a student) he graduates with a degree and job opportunities. You exchange a free education for playing football. Nothing more and nothing less

Probably going to affect they way college football looks over the next few years, then it will level out.

I know he is right in what he is saying but……look at that face…..he wants more NIL money for his team to able to compete. He is not a great spokesman for integrity. This NIL issue puts every coach in the position of wishing to the NIL money fairy to come bring them more than the next guy or at least equal to most. What a position to be in for coaches. Even the most conscientious and integrity filled coach now has the reality pressure to this new world. As O2 says: About Kiffin getting it. Wow kind of like Hugh Hefner giving a sermon on monogamy.

Sad, Sad state of affairs in college football. Parents are struggling to send kids to college and many are taking out loans and they deserve to be there and we are arguing how to get millions of dollars to some kid with a 2.5 GPA who is already getting a 100% free education. Pathetic

To win, a NIL collective will be needed, additional funds for facilities will still be needed. At whatever level you compete in. Athletic departments will need to find additional revenue sources, they are last in the pecking order. If you want to maintain mediocre or bottom dwelling status you can not do these things. Cat is out of the bag, it might change and be updated but it’s here.

When I see CEO, I think of a grift where a low percentage of funds make it to the intended. Think charities with executive bonuses and a fleet of jets.

"The amount of money the schools make televising football games has ballooned, and coaches need to understand that whether they like it or not, they are part of an industry whose core business is creating television programming. They don’t work in higher education, even if their offices are on college campuses. They’re in the entertainment business"

Some coaches make more in one year than most people will in 20 without needing to be successful. Universities have profited out the wazoo off the players, and no, a scholarship didn't equally compensate. Partly because the degrees were useless or incomplete because they were brought in to play ball not to be students. Let's not pretend NIL is something new. It's just new makeup on an old ugly pig. Yeah it's bad, but it was inevitable just because of all the other bad that's been building for literal decades.

Yeah it's bad, but it was inevitable just because of all the other bad that's been building for literal decades. Here is my problem with all of this. #1 evidently take away the STUDENT-athlete title. Evidently they are only here to make the school money and nothing else. #2 at a minimum 50% would not be able to get into college without sports because there are a lot of schools that have entrance requirements far above the NCAA minimum which is a joke. #3 the "they are only one injury away from their career being over" has been true since football started. I have had 5 surgeries from football and a sixth I find out on June 24 if I have to have. So players in FCS, D2, D3 this doesn't apply to I guess. #4 only 1% of all college players make the NFL. So by that formula does only 1% get compensated #5 It is an insult to the 99% of students who had to have the grades to get into college and who will graduate with debt or work two jobs to pay their way that 1% are getting a 100% free education and getting $$$ on top of that

I’m hearing this generation is doing the math and discovering that a degree may not provide a return on their investment. As for athletics, the cost to field a winning team has nowhere to go but up. If my cost to go to Troy costs as much as NFL, then I may need to find a new passion. Also, if a University can’t fiscally field a team anymore due to costs and low enrollment, they may not be able to stay open. Get ready.

Since the federal government took over 100% of student loans the cost of college has went up 1,000%. The universities can charge whatever they want because the government will issue the loans. You are much better off in certain areas to learn a skilled trade than take out $60,000 in loans to get a degree in Gender Studies or Literature

I have some strong feeling about NIL much like the rest of us.My son played two years under scholarship with the traditional 3 meals 2 snacks and no cost of attendance stipend and two years with a stipend and the far more lenient food service players can have now.A Troy scholarship (year round, education, dorm and food service) probably scares 100K for 4 years. The stipend fills in the cracks nicely and is much appreciated 25K additional over a players' tenure and deserved.THAT IS PLENTY.All the rest is manipulation by outside influences that want control of the players earlier.Congress needs to step in and get some sanity back. This is an easy fixed.
My son will perform his first eye surgery on July 10th,thanks to a FREE Troy education.God Bless.
