I don’t know why the question had me tongue-tied.
Recently, I was interviewed on the local sports talk radio show “Three and Out” and simply was asked how I thought the Georgia Southern football team will do in its first season in the Sun Belt Conference.
Every day that question comes up, particularly as this football season nears — it’s a little more than three weeks before the Eagles’ preseason camp opens July 31.
Depending on what side of the bed I wake up on, I usually have a different answer.
Georgia Southern’s season, like the season for every school in America, could unfold several ways.
Best-case scenario for the Eagles? They ride the emotions of their fans, buoyed by a renovated stadium, a new coach and a new sense of purpose, and roll through the Sun Belt with the look of a school that already could be seeking bigger and better. Let’s face it, the Sun Belt isn’t going to be confused with the SEC any time soon.
And even if it was, remember what the Eagles did to Florida at The Swamp last season?
Or ...
Hasn’t Southern been through this before — breaking away from its longtime dependable triple-option offense like a college kid finally leaving his parents’ home and living on his own? What’s for dinner? Pizza again?
Worse-case scenario: The Eagles start out poorly and, minus leader and NFL talent Jerick McKinnon, resemble the team that went 4-4 in the Southern Conference last season. And a middle-of-the-road Southern Conference team probably translates to a bottom feeder in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Even in the Sun Belt.
Now it’s time to wake up.
How do I see Georgia Southern doing this season? I woke up fairly refreshed Sunday and looked out the window. It was cloudy, but the sun was trying to pop out.
I’m thinking 6-6, maybe 7-5 sounds right. (Full Article)
