This article from the Montgomery Advertiser quotes Coach Blakeney, "I won't think about retiring until this season is over," Blakeney said. "See where we are, see what's best for the program and what's best for us and move on." Larry Blakeney has considered retirement. But right now, the Troy football coach is focused on the season ahead. iconTroy3

I think he deserves to be here for at least the ground breaking of the new facility, but it has taken far to long to get shovels in the ground. He's seemed tired in the past fee seasons, but he had a lot of energy last Thursday and seemed excited.
If we win 8+ games everyone will love him again. I think he retires after this season or next for sure.
I think I'll have a beer.

I think he retires after this season. His contract is up and I don't see it being renewed or at least not long term. Possibly a one year contract but IMO he retires.

I'm like you, Hemi...he deserves to be the captain of this ship when the ground-breaking happens. Shame on the Trojan Nation (more so, the admin) for letting this drag out. My hopes are that he sticks around one more year so the TW program can get some additional funding to help us with this contract for a new HFC JH will have to find. Very close to the time for us to put up or shut up.

I am pretty sure unless he wins the Sunbelt and takes Troy to a bowl..he will resign and we will wish him all the best. Coach Davis spent the entire last two years raising money for the softball field and they didn't even give her one year in it. I think the days of loyalty at Troy are over. I am not saying it is a bad thing, but it is the new philosophy...apparently.

I don't want my university being loyal to anyone who doesn't do what they are hired to do...coach, professor, chancellor, AD, janitor or whoever. No one person is bigger than the university or program.

Especially when you want to run a coach that has done just that since he's been here. Your wish will come true, sooner rather than later, but he deserves, at the very least, to stick a shovel in the dirt and put his stuff in the new endzone facility before he packs it in.

The field is named for him so his legacy will always be remembered. I think he will be a part of the ground breaking on the field house whether he is retired or not. I believe we have a succesful season, go to a bowl and LB retires. I also believe he will have input into his successor if he does retire. The other scenario that could happen since his contract is up is that he signs a one or two year deal, I don't think it will be long term with his age. There is also the possibility that he will have his name on the field house also.

I also believe he will have input into his successor if he does retire. I sincerely hope not. We don't need someone from his ol' boy system, we need new faces, new ways of thinking.

I'm pretty sure JH doesn't roll like that... I agree, I don't think he does. I think Blakeney might, so he shouldn't have such a strong inluence on selection. Like anyone else, he can tell Hartwell his opinion.

I meant more on the lines of he might recommend a coach, not that he would choose the coach.

I meant more on the lines of he might recommend a coach, not that he would choose the coach. At this point, seeing how he goes about hiring a coach, I don't think that'll factor in much.

I would guess hay John Hartwell has a short list at all times of potential head coaches.
I think I'll have a beer.

Yo, first post here after finding and joining the site.
Any AD worth his/her salt had better have a list of names at the ready for any pending vacancy. Said list should be constantly updated. LB's a heckuva man and has brought nice success but when he goes, he needs to be gone. TU doesn't need a situation on its' hands along the lines of Dye at AU.

If it is a "short" list, obviously Terry Bowden would be on it.

When Coach LB decides to give it up and If I had any say in it (Which I will not!!), I do believe I would give Pete Lembo at Ball State a call to see what he thinks about coming to Troy Alabama. Right now he is getting paid $ 450,00.00 a year and his career record is not that bad. Career Record: 104 W - 49 L with a winning % of .680 Record With Ball State: 25 W - 13 L with a winning % .658 in the past 4 years In 2013 his record was 10-3
I have no pull, so I am just saying
Its T Time

I know we shouldn't be talking about coach prospects lol cause the great Larry Blakeney is still here at Troy but when he does how would we feel as a fan base if Gene Chizik was hired?? I feel like that would be a good possibility. I love Blakeney and will miss him when hes gone but the truth is he will probably retire soon so no harm during the off season to wonder. Gene Chizik a legit prospect? I think he'd be an amazing recruiter. sFi_lance iconTroy3 TroyStateTrojans8

Yeah, he won one year with Malzahn and Cam Newton and last year proved that Malzahn was the reason for their success. Took a loser that Chizik had and goes to the BCS title game. If they would hire this idiot, Then I would never give a dime to Troy. I can waste money on other things because hiring that loser would be like throwing money out the window. He had a loosing record at Iowa State and got the Auburn job because he was buddies with the AD or President.

We can make a call to Conway, AR and get 10 times the coach that Chizik is. Steve Campbell, former Trojan, National Champ as a player and two as a head coach. Career. .761 as a coach and over .800 in the last 7 years and NEVER HAD A LOSING SEASON. I would take him any day and twice on Sunday over Chizik.
Steve is a winner...period!!!!
