OK so, let's suppose Liberty does join in on the fun. That adds another team in the East. What are options for one in the west?
Liberty: I'm not sure they don't just hold tight. No way they join CDOA. Their endowment might scare away the Belt. It's not like Rice - yet, but it's a lot. They actually make the East super competitive and super tight.
Out west....
Ok so, let's just go ahead and eliminate UL-Rusting. I would take Grambling over them. Bad karma is bad karma. It never pays off to think too highly of yourself. They take the cake there. Also, I expect that Memphis and SMU will probably end up in the Big 12, so AAC is basically morphing into CDOA which didn't work out well.
FCS Options - and I am not adverse to taking one. Texas State needs somebody to hate.
1. Stephen F. Austin: traditionally pretty good athletic program. Fits our profile, but might not be able to make the move.
2. Sam Houston: traditionally pretty good, but luke warm support for athletic teams. I remember their facilities were mediocre (but that might have changed). Students vote down fee increase.
3. Abilene Christian: for no other reason than we need to make up for an embarrassing night many years ago
4. Lamar: I love Lamar, but they are always getting beat 76-3; their basketball program used to be good; baseball is good. Beaumont has potential.
5. Central Arkansas: maybe
6. Missouri State: No
FBS Options
1. ECU: Why not? The AAC is turning into CDOA which they left (becoming the DOAAC). Their fans probably want GaSouth, Marshall, Liberty and AppState more than they want UNCC, F_U, UNT or Rice. Seriously, go for it. Pushes UAB-Atlanta into the west, but nobody cares about them.
2. Texas Western: I have no idea what they did to make the MWC to just ignore them. They are a perfect fit for them and with the Big 12 maybe raiding the MWC maybe they will return home. They do have tradition winning the NCAA tournament in the 60's. They used to draw 15k during the Haskins era. El Paso might as well be in Hawaii though, but I like it.
3. MTSU: ....make them publicly acknowledge their mistake, ban them bowl appearances for 5 years and play all conference games away. They fit our footprint and were fools for leaving.
I did hear that both MTSU and WKU approached the belt already but were rebuked by the S'Belt West teams. Good.
