Does anyone else read that in the announcement and chuckle. I guess national as in anyone from outside Pike County but not beyond Forest County, MS.
Quite frankly, I'd be surprised if anyone outside a 3 state area would even consider applying. Like someone from the Big 10 or Big 12? Facilities I guess would be the big draw.
We need somebody with passion. Many of you clowns weren't even around when Maestri took over a morbid program back in the early 80's and had Sartain thumping. He did it very much like that other football coach did, by selling the students. Visiting the Greek organizations. Showtime. Halftime paper airplane contest. I remember that place was totally packed to the gills one night when Jax State came to town. So wild, the student section got a technical foul after Andre Hills drove down the lane for a tomahawk dunk; over about three 'cocks to ice the game. Jax State coach went crazy. Students literally had to be restrained from charging the court. I think some did and there still time on the clock. Yeah, hard to believe that went on. Toilets still didn't work back then either.

Ho, you know I remember the Maestri games. Sat on the bench for almost all of them. Maestri was a salesman of the game. Cunningham wasn't . Cunningham wanted to coach and coach only. From what I have been told he never got out in the community and worked to get people in to the games. Yes, there were certain people that donated money that he would see but the general fan he didn't do it.
I am embarrassed to see the attendance in Trojan Arena. Fan's can help win games.
I'm like you. AD will look in Mississippi. That's all he knows. It shows he isn't ready to be a big time AD. He doesn't have the connections to hire outside of that area.
I wish it wasn't true but it is.

We have to get this hire right or we will never get the ship turned around

Ok, here's my uninformed, unqualified take on the coaching hire. Those of you who follow the football board may remember, I have a nephew that plays college football. He plays at a small FCS school in the Big South conference, Gardner - Webb. I turned on the TV yesterday and saw that GW was playing Radford for the Big South championship, so, I decided I watch, just so I could chat intelligently after the game with Will.
I saw a coach (2 actually, but I'm gonna focus on the winner) that had passion and emotion during the game - that's what some on here say we've been lacking. I saw a basketball team play with passion and emotion, not for 3 minute stretches, but for 40 minutes. I saw a group of guys bust their behinds to win a game. When Radford made a run early in the second half to pull to within 5, I saw a team change their approach, stop the run of Radford and mount one of their own. Each of these things are things that have been mentioned over that course of this season as lacking in Trojan Arena by our TROJANS.
Do I think we need to go after and hire the Gardner - Webb BB coach? I have NO IDEA, but I suspect the answer is "No". Why do I bring this up? Gardner - Webb, lil ole bitty Gardner - Webb, is proof that the kind of coach we need is out there. They are proof that you don't have play in Rupp or Cameron Indoor to hire a coach like that. They are proof that, given the right personnel, anything is possible - they won their first ever Big South championship yesterday and are going to the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history. Our guy is out there, we jut have to identify him and hire him. We can do this. We did it in FB, wed did it in WBB, it's time to do it in MBB.

We don't necessarily need to go looking for another guy holding a clip board on a bench. One of the best hires Troy did was Rigby and she came from PJC. Nothing wrong with looking at a hungry, aggressive coach with a proven record from a lower division. We have one shot at this and we need the best we can get.

You are hired to win...I think but then some on here say who cares about non revenue women's sports. If Troy fields a team next year in the dumbest sport ever (curling) we should strive to the the best. I hope that soccer and volleyball get turned around. Hamilton won year one so it can be done. I heard we had a good class in volleyball so hopefully they get turned around

Here's a wild and crazy idea. Give the job to Rigby. Love her, great coach but the Mens basketball is just a different animal. Not to mention would players respect a women coach?

They would respect a winner. She's a winner. If so then make Neil Harrow the HC of women’s First off I don't think Rigby's style would translate well to men's basketball but that's my opinion, I think we should be more worried that a larger women's program hires her after the season. She already interviewed at an SEC school last year. Secondly Neil would have no business taking over as head coach. His only experience not in Euro ball was graduate assistant at Valdosta before coming to TROY, and we have another assistant coach who's been an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at multiple D1 programs and an associate head coach that before she came was actually a head coach of a Div. 1 program that's actually lager than TROY, admittedly the sunbelt is a better conference . I know he has EURO youth coaching experience I just don't see how Neil would be the first choice when we have two other choices that are leaps and bounds more qualified when it comes to women's college coaching experience.

Come on Cornhole, It doesn't take a crystal ball to see his track record. I hope he proves me wrong. I like PC. He's a great guy. They don't come much nicer than him. But he wasn't the right choice for the job. Now lets see who the AD goes out and gets. Its all about wins and seats in the arena.

You think we'll grab an assistant at a big Basketball school or will we get an up and coming head coach from a smaller college?

Took awhile, but here comes the “let’s never fire a coach, he’s my buddy, or he needs more time, or let’s not worry about wins or losses” crowd. Wins put buts in seats. Neal Brown proved that and to a lesser degree Hamilton in soccer. Soccer was just an after thought, you saw the field from the Trojan Center and some students walked the track around around it. He comes in and they win right away and low and behold 1,200 students in the crowd to watch chick soccer. NB comes in, we win and students are taking busses to Mobile for an away game plus we start setting attendance records. Two things the new coach has to do 1) WIN!! 2) Get the students excited about basketball and like Ho said, get them excited about games by doing fun things during the games 3-10) WIN!! Nothing breeds excitement like winning....period. We have got to get this hire right or we basically have an arena for a good women's team, a sub par volleyball team and a great graduation venue.
