Troy: Sources tell FootballScoop Kentucky’s director of recruiting EK Franks is expected to become assistant athletic director for football at Troy. Prior to joining Mark Stoops’ staff, Franks had served as director of player personnel at Florida and at Arkansas. He previously had served as associate head coach / running backs at Southeastern Louisiana and had been on staff at Wisconsin, Kansas State & Delta State.

Good ol' boy network running strong in Pike County these days. First, what do you think coaching staffs generally are?? People who have worked together and known each other. Second, where do you see that he has worked at any of the same places as the other staff?

Delta State... That's where McClain was for a little while, correct?

Delta State... That's where McClain was for a little while, correct? He coached at Delta State, yes. But also, Kansas State, Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky. But why is it bad to bring in people you know?

NB kept two existing coaches that were at Troy that he had worked with prior, brought in a OL coach he had worked with, a strength coach he had worked and other coaches he knew or had working relationships with and nobody said anything. Why? every coach does it. Why would he hire complete strangers or the AD for that matter?

Ho actually like hires so far. With exception of two, they all have some connection to The Normal School. Why that important? Because they have invested their sweat and blood into the program as a player or coach or both. They have all won here too...with lesser facilities. CW has been a part of 6 conference titles. Davern and Shelton have won big games under LB. I imagine loyalty shows in recruiting too. player sees a coach that played and won at The Normal School says something. He not just play lip service about how good it is.

Say all you want, and I was right there with many BEGGING for a change, BUT, he is still coaching at the highest level of college football. So, SOMEBODY (at least one Head Coach) thinks he can coach, just sayin!!!! Does anyone remember who was brought in AFTER JR to be the DC? If THAT doesn't fit under "Interesting Hire" then nothing does!!!

Unpopular Opinion: Rowell's defenses were conference title worthy four years in a row. He should get credit for that. The team as a whole began to decline in Larry's final years at Troy. It's possible that the head ball coach (a legend, I mean no disrespect), had lost control of the team, and wasn't recruiting a high level anymore. Not saying Rowell was a great coach down the stretch, but it wasn't all on him by any means. Would he have been as bad if Larry was 10 years younger during that time?

Some things JR did were inexcusable. Like the offense putting up 700 yards on Derek Dooley's Tennessee team and couldn't muster up enough D to get the W. I remember watching a game against Monroe. The QB threw a TD pass to a receiver who had no Troy player within 20 yards of him. My Dad could have walked that one in.

Going back to what TroyFootball05 said is that on Jeremy or the whole staff that we didn't have the same caliber of players at that time?

Recruiting was too much work for that staff. By those years, the Co-ords and staffers were clock watchers. Yet they had no trouble finding Itawamba CC or Scooba, MS That made it easy, one call, feet up on the desk with a cup of joe. Met at sister's for lunch and golf at 4pm. "Hey, we need a safety! Ah, call scooba, what time is our tee time??" Neal Brown changed that.
